    Review of national financial education policies aimed at the young ā€“ evidence for developing and implementing policy recommendations for Croatia

    Purpose: The paper investigates and synthesizes an in-depth overview of national financial education policies and strategies aimed at the young, highlights the best practices, gives recommendations for the most efficient financial education efforts at the national level and the implementation of an efficient financial education policy in Croatia. Methodology: The analysis is conducted as a case study of financial education policies and strategies aimed at the young of the countries that achieved the best results on the OECD PISA test, Australia, the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Results: The examined countries have national financial education policies with similar aims, fields of financial education and strategies of evaluation but, although they are part of the curriculum, the programs are mostly not standardized and financial education efforts towards teachers and parents are not emphasized. Conclusion: To be efficient, a financial education program aimed at the young has to be relevant, customized according to participantsā€™ characteristics, has to relate knowledge to a specific action, has to be longterm, successfully evaluated, standardized on the national level, implemented at a younger age and have a specified aim. Financial education should be considered as an independent subject in formal education

    Hymenaphorura uzicensis, a new cave species of springtails (Onychiuridae: Collembola) from West Serbia

    A new species of the collembolan family Onychiuridae, Hymenaphorura uzicensis n. sp., has been described from the Potpećska Pećina Cave, nr. Užice, West Serbia. It is phenetically closest to Hymenaphorura polonica Pomorski. This new taxon is endemic and probably restricted only to its cave habitat

    Praon spinosum Mackauer, 1959 reared from Thrzpsaphis verrucosa Gillette,1917 on Carex nigra and Diaeretellus macrocarpus Mackauer, 1961 reared from the conspecific aphid on Carex rostrata association from Mt. Durmitor Biosphere Reserve in Serbia and Montenegro are redescribed, diagnosed and illustrated with photographs from SEM and line drawings. The taxonomic position of P. spinosum within the genus Praon is discussed. Furthermore, some rare and endemic aphid ā€” aphid-parasitoid associations from high-montane areas of southeastern Europe are reviewed and their distribution and origin is discussed

    ā€œA matter of healthā€: Evaluation of health habits in pupils in Primary School in Serbia

    We interviewed more than 400 primary school pupils from 5th to the 8th grade (aged 11 to 14 years) from the primary school in Belgrade (Serbia) about their habits concerning nutrition, beverage consumption, and time spend in front of a computer, tablet, playing games on consoles, or using a mobile phone. According to the study, a high percentage of students showed a well-established habit of eating breakfast. Also, the overall water consumption prevailed in all grades, since the school ensures students access to safe and free drinking water, as a healthy alternative to consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. However, we found increasing food consumption from bakery and consumption of carbonated drinks both in boys and girls from senior grades (7th and 8th). Also, they spent considerably more time with a computer, tablet, or mobile phone than the pupils from lower grades. About one-third of all surveyed students have been watching television or using a computer more than 3 hours during the day. We found a significant increase of BMI, as an indicator of the increasing risk of weight gain and obesity both in boys and girls in senior grades. In the current curriculum of Biology, the topic of human health is studied in the 7th grade, but presented results show that one-year education in health topics is not sufficient. It suggests the necessity of introducing the topic of health in all grades of elementary school, starting from the lowest age

    Integument in Apfelbeckia insculpta (L. Koch, 1867) (Diplopoda, Callipodida) ā€“ morphoanatomical and ultrastructural study

    The morphoanatomical and ultrastructural features of the integument (cuticle + epidermis) of an endemic Balkan millipede, Apfelbeckia insculpta (L. Koch, 1867), are investigated utilizing light (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cuticle consists of epicuticle (outermost layer), exocuticle, endocuticle and membranous layer that is in contact with the underlying epidermis. Epicuticle is layer of varying thickness, while exocuticle is composed of helicoidally arranged sheets of microfibriles that appear as close-spaced light and dark bands. Endocuticle is the widest part of cuticle with the broad light bands that are oriented in the same direction. TEM micrographs show that these bands are composed of lamellae arranged in arcuate pattern and curved microfibriles. Membranous layer is intersected in some regions by canals that connect epidermis and different levels of the cuticle and/or surface. The epidermis is monostratified layer of cells that are characterized by distinct polarity. Basal part of epidermal cells is rich in rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, while apical part contains numerous osmiophilic granules. Nuclei of epidermal cells are ovoid and positioned in different regions of cells. Interdigitations are formed among cells in some epidermal regions. Our study corroborates previous findings on integument organization in Diplopoda and shows that species-specific patterns of cuticular ultrastructure can be present in these arthropods

    In insects, cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profile is involved in many important biological functions and may vary in different conditions. Among fruit fly species, Drosophila subobscura is one of the most frequently used in genetic, ecological and evolutionary research, because of its rich chromosomal polymorphism, specific behavioral repertoires and habitat preferences. In this work, we identified and quantified cuticular chemoprofile of D. subobscura. Using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), 25 chemical compounds were found in males and 23 compounds were found in females. Further, ANOVA confirmed significant sexual dimorphism in cuticular chemoprofile amounts. Knowledge of cuticular chemistry could contribute to further research in D. subobscura, starting from behavioral, up to ecological, since this species is recognized as an important model system for the study and monitoring of global climate changes.
