    New results from the NA57 experiment

    We report results from the experiment NA57 at CERN SPS on hyperon production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 AA GeV/cc and 40 AA GeV/cc. Λ\Lambda, Ξ\Xi and Ω\Omega yields are compared with those from the STAR experiment at the higher energy of the BNL RHIC.     Centrality dependence of charged-particle pseudorapidity distributions from d+Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV

    Charged-particle pseudorapidity densities are presented for the d+Au reaction at sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV with -4.2 <= eta <= 4.2$. The results, from the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC, are shown for minimum-bias events and 0-30%, 30-60%, and 60-80% centrality classes. Models incorporating both soft physics and hard, perturbative QCD-based scattering physics agree well with the experimental results. The data do not support predictions based on strong-coupling, semi-classical QCD. In the deuteron-fragmentation region the central 200 GeV data show behavior similar to full-overlap d+Au results at sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.4 GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 3figures; expanded discussion of uncertainties; added 60-80% centrality range; added additional discussion on centrality selection bia

    Scanning the phases of QCD with BRAHMS

    BRAHMS has the ability to study relativistic heavy ion collisions from the final freeze-out of hadrons all the way back to the initial wave-function of the gold nuclei. This is accomplished by studying hadrons with a very wide range of momenta and angles.     Results on strange particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 and 40 AA GeV/cc beam momentum from the NA57 experiment at CERN SPS are presented. Particle yields and ratios are compared with those measured at RHIC.     We report the measurement of charged hadron production at different pseudo-rapidity values in deuteron+gold as well as proton+proton collisions at sqrtsNNsqrt{s_{NN}} = 200GeV at RHIC.     Effective Rheology of Bubbles Moving in a Capillary Tube

    We calculate the average volumetric flux versus pressure drop of bubbles moving in a single capillary tube with varying diameter, finding a square-root relation from mapping the flow equations onto that of a driven overdamped pendulum. The calculation is based on a derivation of the equation of motion of a bubble train from considering the capillary forces and the entropy production associated with the viscous flow. We also calculate the configurational probability of the positions of the bubbles.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Production of Mesons and Baryons at High Rapidity and High Pt in Proton-Proton Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

    We present particle spectra for charged hadrons π±,K±,p\pi^\pm, K^\pm, p and pˉ\bar{p} from pp collisions at s\sqrt{s}=200GeVmeasuredforthefirsttimeatforwardrapidities(2.95and3.3).Thekinematicsofthesemeasurementsareskewedinawaythatprobesthesmallmomentumfractioninoneoftheprotonsandlargefractionsintheother.Largeprotontopionratiosareobservedatvaluesoftransversemomentumthatextendupto4GeV/c,whereprotonshavemomentaupto35GeV.NexttoleadingorderperturbativeQCDcalculationsdescribetheproductionofpionsandkaonswellattheserapidities,butfailtoaccountforthelargeprotonyieldsandsmall GeV measured for the first time at forward rapidities (2.95 and 3.3). The kinematics of these measurements are skewed in a way that probes the small momentum fraction in one of the protons and large fractions in the other. Large proton to pion ratios are observed at values of transverse momentum that extend up to 4 GeV/c, where protons have momenta up to 35 GeV. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations describe the production of pions and kaons well at these rapidities, but fail to account for the large proton yields and small \bar{p}/p$ ratios associated with baryon transport

    The NA57 experiment has been designed to study the production of strange and multi-strange particles in Pb-Pb and p-Be collisions at the CERN SPS. The predecessor experiment WA97 has measured an enhanced abundance of strange particles in Pb-Pb collisions relative to p-A reactions at 160 GeV/c per nucleon beam momentum. NA57 has extended the WA97 measurements to investigate the evolution of the strangeness enhancement pattern as a function of the beam energy and over a wider centrality range. In this paper, we report results on cascade production for about the 60% most central collisions at 160 GeV/c per nucleon
