    Three Disk Oscillation Modes of Rotating Magnetized Neutron Stars

    We discuss three specific modes of accretion disks around rotating magnetized neutron stars which may explain the separations of the kilo Hertz quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) seen in low mass X-ray binaries. The existence of these modes requires that there be a maximum in the angular velocity of the accreting material, and that the fluid is in stable, nearly circular motion near this maximum rather than moving rapidly towards the star or out of the disk plane into funnel flows. It is presently not known if these conditions occur, but we are exploring this with 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations and will report the results elsewhere. The first mode is a corotation mode which is radially trapped in the vicinity of the maximum of the disk rotation rate and is unstable. The second mode, relevant to relatively slowly rotating stars, is a magnetically driven eccentric (m=1m=1) oscillation of the disk excited at a Lindblad radius in the vicinity of the maximum of the disk rotation. The third mode, relevant to rapidly rotating stars, is a magnetically coupled eccentric (m=1m=1) and an axisymmetric (m=0m=0) radial disk perturbation which has an inner Lindblad radius also in the vicinity of the maximum of the disk rotation. We suggest that the first mode is associated with the upper QPO frequency, νu\nu_u, the second with the lower QPO frequency, ν=νuν\nu_\ell =\nu_u-\nu_*, and the third with the lower QPO frequency, ν=νuν/2\nu_\ell=\nu_u-\nu_*/2, where ν\nu_* is the star's rotation rate.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Locking of the Rotation of Disk-Accreting Magnetized Stars

    We investigate the rotational equilibrium state of a disk accreting magnetized stars using axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. In this ``locked'' state, the spin-up torque balances the spin-down torque so that the net average torque on the star is zero. We investigated two types of initial conditions, one with a relatively weak stellar magnetic field and a high coronal density, and the other with a stronger stellar field and a lower coronal density. We observed that for both initial conditions the rotation of the star is locked to the rotation of the disk. In the second case, the radial field lines carry significant angular momentum out of the star. However, this did not appreciably change the condition for locking of the rotation of the star. We find that in the equilibrium state the corotation radius rcor_{co} is related to the magnetospheric radius rAr_A as rco/rA1.21.3r_{co}/r_A\approx 1.2-1.3 for case (1) and rco/rA1.41.5r_{co}/r_A\approx 1.4-1.5 for case (2). We estimated periods of rotation in the equilibrium state for classical T Tauri stars, dwarf novae and X-ray millisecond pulsars.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures.     Gamma-ray Flares and VLBI Outbursts of Blazars

    A model is developed for the time dependent electromagnetic - radio to gamma-ray - emission of active galactic nuclei, specifically, the blazars, based on the acceleration and creation of leptons at a propagating discontinuity or {\it front} of a Poynting flux jet. The front corresponds to a discrete relativistic jet component as observed with very-long-baseline-interferometry (VLBI). Equations are derived for the number, momentum, and energy of particles in the front taking into account synchrotron, synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC), and inverse-Compton processes as well as photon-photon pair production. The apparent synchrotron, SSC, and inverse-Compton luminosities as functions of time are determined. Predictions of the model are compared with observations in the gamma, optical and radio bands. The delay between the high-energy gamma-ray flare and the onset of the radio is explained by self-absorption and/or free-free absorption by external plasma.     Initial data transients in binary black hole evolutions

    We describe a method for initializing characteristic evolutions of the Einstein equations using a linearized solution corresponding to purely outgoing radiation. This allows for a more consistent application of the characteristic (null cone) techniques for invariantly determining the gravitational radiation content of numerical simulations. In addition, we are able to identify the {\em ingoing} radiation contained in the characteristic initial data, as well as in the initial data of the 3+1 simulation. We find that each component leads to a small but long lasting (several hundred mass scales) transient in the measured outgoing gravitational waves.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Absence of platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1/CD31) in vivo increases resistance to Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in mice.

    PECAM-1/CD31 is known to regulate inflammatory responses and exhibit pro- and anti-inflammatory functions. This study was designed to determine the functional role of PECAM-1 in susceptibility to murine primary in vivo infection with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and in in vitro inflammatory responses of peritoneal macrophages. Lectin profiling showed that cellular PECAM-1 and recombinant human PECAM-1-Ig chimera contain high levels of mannose sugars and N-acetylglucosamine. Consistent with this carbohydrate pattern, both recombinant human and murine PECAM-1-Ig chimeras were shown to bind S. Typhimurium in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. Using oral and fecal-oral transmission models of S. Typhimurium SL1344 infection, PECAM-1-/- mice were found to be more resistant to S. Typhimurium infection than wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice. While fecal shedding of S. Typhimurium was comparable in wild-type and PECAM-1-/- mice, the PECAM-1-deficient mice had lower bacterial loads in systemic organs such as liver, spleen, and mesenteric lymph nodes than WT mice, suggesting that extraintestinal dissemination was reduced in the absence of PECAM-1. This reduced bacterial load correlated with reduced tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP) levels in sera of PECAM-1-/- mice. Following in vitro stimulation of macrophages with either whole S. Typhimurium, lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (Toll-like receptor 4 [TLR4] ligand), or poly(I·C) (TLR3 ligand), production of TNF and IL-6 by PECAM-1-/- macrophages was reduced. Together, these results suggest that PECAM-1 may have multiple functions in resistance to infection with S. Typhimurium, including binding to host cells, extraintestinal spread to deeper tissues, and regulation of inflammatory cytokine production by infected macrophages

    Loop Variables with Chan-Paton Factors

    The Loop Variable method that has been developed for the U(1) bosonic open string is generalized to include non-Abelian gauge invariance by incorporating "Chan-Paton" gauge group indices. The scale transformation symmetry k(s)k(s)λ(s)k(s) \to k(s) \lambda (s) that was responsible for gauge invariance in the U(1) case continues to be a symmetry. In addition there is a "rotation" symmetry. Both symmetries crucially involve the massive modes. However it is plausible that only a linear combination, which is the usual Yang-Mills transformation on massless fields, has a smooth (world sheet) continuum limit. We also illustrate how an infinite number of terms in the equation of motion in the cutoff theory add up to give a term that has a smooth continuum limit, and thus contributes to the low energy Yang-Mills equation of motion.Comment: One paragraph has been modified and the connection with the Renormalization Group is explaine
