Historically, sales of exotic meats have been limited only by supply. As supply has increased in recent years, national
and international exotic game markets have grown rapidly. In the United States, growth
has occurred primarily in the restaurant section, although over-the-counter sales
have also increased.
The Alaskan reindeer industry is exploring the potential of expanding its meat sales as well as antler sales. Meat production increased from 320,000 pounds in 1987 to 432,000 pounds in 1988. This production increase is reflected in a 27
percent increase in dollar value (Alaska Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, 1989). Under current management procedures, potential meat production has been estimated at 500,000 pounds (Pearson and Lewis, 1988). Any future market expansion
is likely to occur in urban Alaska and in areas outside the state (Jones, 1988)
An upper limit to the dry merger rate at <z> ~ 0.55
We measure the fraction of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in dynamically close
pairs (with projected separation less than 20 kpc and velocity
difference less than 500 km s) to estimate the dry merger rate for
galaxies with and
in the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) redshift survey. For galaxies with a
luminosity ratio of or greater we determine a upper limit to
the merger fraction of 1.0% and a merger rate of
Mpc Gyr (assuming that all pairs merge on the shortest possible
timescale set by dynamical friction). This is significantly smaller than
predicted by theoretical models and suggests that major dry mergers do not

The cortisol awakening response predicts a same-day index of executive function in healthy young adults
The cortisol awakening response (CAR) is associated with various aspects of cognition, including executive function, in older adult and clinical samples. However, the association between these variables in the healthy functioning population is not well understood due to the limited number of appropriately controlled studies. This study explored the association between the CAR and a set shifting index of executive function in 55 (44 females) healthy participants aged 20.2 ± 3.0 years. Notoriously, assessment of the CAR from self-collected saliva samples within the domestic setting is subject to sample timing error, so electronic monitoring of both awakening and sampling times were employed. Participants attended the laboratory in the afternoon of CAR assessment for testing on the Attention Switching Task of the CANTAB neuropsychological testing battery. A positive association was found between CAR magnitude and attention-switching performance in the afternoon of the same day. This was independent of known relevant CAR covariates, but only evident in CAR data collected without delay exceeding 8 min post-awakening. These findings offer insight into a potential role for the CAR in modulating cognitive functions associated with the pre-frontal cortex
Scoping the role and education needs of practice nurses in London
Aims: To identify education priorities for practice nursing across eight London Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs); to identify the education, training, development and support needs of practice nurses in undertaking current and future roles. Background: The education needs of practice nurses have long been recognised but their employment status means that accessing education requires the support of their GP employer. This study scopes the educational requirements of the practice nurse workforce and working with educational providers and commissioners describes a coherent educational pathway for practice nurses. Method: A survey of practice nurses to scope their educational attainment needs was undertaken. Focus groups were carried out which identified the education, training, development and support needs of practice nurses to fulfil current and future roles. Findings: 272 respondents completed the survey. Practice nurses took part in three focus groups (n=34) and one workshop (n=39). Findings from this research indicate a practice nurse workforce which lacked career progression, role autonomy or a coherent educational framework. Practice nurses recognised the strength of their role in building relationship-centred care with patients over an extended period of time. They valued this aspect of their role and would welcome opportunities to develop this to benefit patients. Conclusion: This paper demonstrates an appetite for more advanced education among practice nurses, a leadership role by the CCGs in working across the whole system to address the education needs of practice nurses, and a willingness on the part of NHS education commissioners to commission education which meets the education needs of the practice nurse workforce. Evidence is still required, however, to inform the scope of the practice nurse role within an integrated system of care and to identify the impact of practice nursing on improving health outcomes and care of local populations
Scale Dependent Dimension of Luminous Matter in the Universe
We present a geometrical model of the distribution of luminous matter in the
universe, derived from a very simple reaction-diffusion model of turbulent
phenomena. The apparent dimension of luminous matter, , depends linearly
on the logarithm of the scale under which the universe is viewed: , where is a correlation length.
Comparison with data from the SARS red-shift catalogue, and the LEDA database
provides a good fit with a correlation length Mpc. The
geometrical interpretation is clear: At small distances, the universe is
zero-dimensional and point-like. At distances of the order of 1 Mpc the
dimension is unity, indicating a filamentary, string-like structure; when
viewed at larger scales it gradually becomes 2-dimensional wall-like, and
finally, at and beyond the correlation length, it becomes uniform.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

Erroneous patient birthdates are common in health databases. Detection of these errors usually involves manual verification, which can be resource intensive and impractical. By identifying a frequent manifestation of birthdate errors, this paper presents a principled and statistically driven procedure to identify erroneous patient birthdates
Statistics of clustering of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and the number of their sources
Observation of clustering of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) suggests
that they are emitted by compact sources. Assuming small deflection of UHECR
during the propagation, the statistical analysis of clustering allows to
estimate the spatial density of the sources, h, including those which have not
yet been observed directly. When applied to astrophysical models involving
extra-galactic sources, the estimate based on 14 events with energy E>10^{20}
eV gives h ~ 6 X 10^{-3} Mps^{-3}. With increasing statistics, this estimate
may lead to exclusion of the models which associate the production of UHECR
with exceptional galaxies such as AGN, powerful radio-galaxies, dead quasars,

GAMA/H-ATLAS: common star-formation rate indicators and their dependence on galaxy physical parameters
We compare common star-formation rate (SFR) indicators in the local Universe in the GAMA equatorial fields (around 160 sq. deg.), using ultraviolet (UV) photometry from GALEX, far-infrared (FIR) and sub-millimetre (sub-mm) photometry from H-ATLAS, and Halpha spectroscopy from the GAMA survey. With a high-quality sample of 745 galaxies (median redshift 0.08), we consider three SFR tracers: UV luminosity corrected for dust attenuation using the UV spectral slope beta (SFRUV,corr), Halpha line luminosity corrected for dust using the Balmer decrement (BD) (SFRHalpha,corr), and the combination of UV and IR emission (SFRUV+IR). We demonstrate that SFRUV,corr can be reconciled with the other two tracers after applying attenuation corrections by calibrating IRX (i.e. the IR to UV luminosity ratio) and attenuation in the Halpha (derived from BD) against beta. However, beta on its own is very unlikely to be a reliable attenuation indicator. We find that attenuation correction factors depend on parameters such as stellar mass, z and dust temperature (Tdust), but not on Halpha equivalent width (EW) or Sersic index. Due to the large scatter in the IRX vs beta correlation, when compared to SFRUV+IR, the beta-corrected SFRUV,corr exhibits systematic deviations as a function of IRX, BD and Tdust
