    The Experience of Captaincy in Professional Sport: The Case of Elite Professional Rugby.

    The captain is perceived to be an important member of the leadership structure within teams across many professional sports. However, while there is a general acceptance that this is the case there is very little research exploring the role and associated demands at an elite level. As a result, the aim of this study was to explore the captaincy experiences of elite professional rugby union captains. The participants were eight male captains purposefully sampled for this study. Participants were interviewed individually to gain an understanding of each participant’s captaincy experiences. The data were thematically analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Nine super-ordinate themes emerged in the study: role, skills, requirements, challenges, the coach, development, experience, context and approach. Results suggest that the captaincy role is broader than previously highlighted, particularly at the elite level. Also, the study highlights inconsistencies in the selection of captains and a lack of formal developmental support for elite rugby captains. As a result, future research should explore the development of specific evidence-based approaches to captain selection and development

    Solar soft X-rays and solar activity

    Peak fluxes of flare-associated 8–12 Å X-ray bursts occur at or near the time of the maximum energy content of the soft X-ray source volume. The amplitudes of flare-associated bursts may thus be used as a measure of the energy deposited in the source volume by non-thermal electrons and other processes. In the mean, the soft X-ray burst amplitude is apparently independent of the occurrence of a type III event.     Cognitive versus automatic mechanisms of mood induction differentially activate left and right amygdala

    The amygdala plays a key role in emotional processing. The specific contribution of the amygdala during the experience of one's own emotion, however, remains controversial and requires clarification. There is a long-standing debate on hemispheric lateralization of emotional processes, yet few studies to date directly investigated differential activation patterns for the left and right amygdala. Limited evidence supports right amygdala involvement in automatic processes of emotion and left amygdala involvement in conscious and cognitively controlled emotion processing. The present study investigated differential contributions of the left and right amygdala to cognitive and automatic mechanisms of mood induction. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined hemispheric amygdala responses during two mood induction paradigms: a purely visual method presenting face stimuli and an audiovisual method using faces and music. Amygdala responses in 30 subjects (16 females) showed differences in lateralization patterns depending on the processing mode. The left amygdala exhibited comparable activation levels for both methods. The right amygdala, in contrast, showed increased activity only for the audiovisual condition and this activity was increasing over time. The left amygdala showed augmented activity with higher intensity ratings of negative emotional valence. These results support a left-lateralized cognitive and intentional control of mood and a right-sided more automatic induction of emotion that relies less on explicit reflection processes. The modulation of the left amygdala responses by subjective experience may reflect individual differences in the cognitive effort used to induce the mood. Thus, the central role of the amygdala may not be restricted to the perception of emotion in others but also extend into processes involved in regulation of mood

    Cohesion as Shared Beliefs in Exercise Classes

    The purpose of the study was to determine if perceptions of cohesion in exercise classes demonstrated sufficiently high consensus and between-group variance to support a conclusion that exercise classes are groups. Participants (N = 1,700) in 130classes were tested on either the Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) or the Physical Activity Group Environment Questionnaire (PAGEQ). Results showed that exercise classes satisfied the statistical criteria necessary to support a conclusion that they are true groups; that is, they exhibited acceptable levels of consensus about cohesion within classes and acceptable differences in cohesion between classes. In addition, index-of-agreement values were significantly greater for participants completing the PAGEQ than for participants completing the GEQ. Finally, consensus was greatest when participants evaluated how the exercise class satisfied their own personal task needs (i.e., individual attractions to the group-task), and second greatest when participants evaluated the collective unity around the task objectives (i.e., group integration-task)
