Role of deep levels and interface states in the capacitance characteristics of allâsputtered CuInSe2/CdS solar cell heterojunctions
Allâsputtered CuInSe2/CdS solar cellheterojunctions have been analyzed by means of capacitanceâfrequency (CâF) and capacitanceâbias voltage (CâV) measurements. Depending on the CuInSe2 layer composition, two kinds of heterojunctions were analyzed: type 1 heterojunctions (based on stoichiometric or slightly Inârich CuInSe2 layers) and type 2 heterojunctions (based on Cuârich CuInSe2 layers). In type 1 heterojunctions, a 80âmeV donor level has been found. Densities of interface states in the range 101 0â101 1 cm2âeVâ 1 (type 1) and in the range 101 2â101 3 cmâ 2âeVâ 1 (type 2) have been deduced. On the other hand, doping concentrations of 1.6Ă101 6 cmâ 3 for stoichiometric CuInSe2 (type 1 heterojunction) and 8Ă101 7 cmâ 3 for the CdS (type 2 heterojunction) have been deduced from CâVmeasurements
Advancing the understanding of treponemal disease in the past and present
Syphilis was perceived to be a new disease in Europe in the late 15th century, igniting a debate about its origin that continues today in anthropological, historical, and medical circles. We move beyond this age-old debate using an interdisciplinary approach that tackles broader questions to advance the understanding of treponemal infection (syphilis, yaws, bejel, and pinta). How did the causative organism(s) and humans co-evolve? How did the related diseases caused by Treponema pallidum emerge in different parts of the world and affect people across both time and space? How are T. pallidum subspecies related to the treponeme causing pinta? The current state of scholarship in specific areas is reviewed with recommendations made to stimulate future work. Understanding treponemal biology, genetic relationships, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations is crucial for vaccine development today and for investigating the distribution of infection in both modern and past populations. Paleopathologists must improve diagnostic criteria and use a standard approach for recording skeletal lesions on archaeological human remains. Adequate contextualization of cultural and environmental conditions is necessary, including site dating and justification for any corrections made for marine or freshwater reservoir effects. Biogeochemical analyses may assess aquatic contributions to diet, physiological changes arising from treponemal disease and its treatments (e.g., mercury), or residential mobility of those affected. Shifting the focus from point of origin to investigating who is affected (e.g., by age/sex or socioeconomic status) and disease distribution (e.g., coastal/ inland, rural/urban) will advance our understanding of the treponemal disease and its impact on people through time
Mood impairments in adults previously diagnosed with Developmental Coordination Disorder
Background: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) affects up to 6% of the population and is diagnosed on the basis of poor motor coordination. While we know rather little about its lifetime consequences, clear and significant difficulties remain through the lifespan for the majority. Reduced physical activity and, outside of the motor domain, significant mental health issues exist for many with DCD.
Aims: This study provides the first investigation of the presence of mood disorders in adults with DCD.
Method: Symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Beck Depression and Spielberger Anxiety Inventories in 36 adults previously diagnosed with DCD vs. 49 age- and gender-matched typical controls. Amount and type of physical activity undertaken each week were also reported.
Results: After controlling for their reduced level of weekly physical activity, the group with DCD reported significantly more symptoms of depression, state and trait anxiety than their peers.
Conclusions: This finding has important implications for consideration of intervention in DCD, as well as for investigation of the risk and protective factors at play in long term outcome. Finally the findings highlight the need for awareness of motor difficulties in those presenting with high levels of anxiety and depression, and vice versa
Carbon Dioxide Utilisation -The Formate Route
UIDB/50006/2020 CEEC-Individual 2017 Program Contract.The relentless rise of atmospheric CO2 is causing large and unpredictable impacts on the Earth climate, due to the CO2 significant greenhouse effect, besides being responsible for the ocean acidification, with consequent huge impacts in our daily lives and in all forms of life. To stop spiral of destruction, we must actively reduce the CO2 emissions and develop new and more efficient âCO2 sinksâ. We should be focused on the opportunities provided by exploiting this novel and huge carbon feedstock to produce de novo fuels and added-value compounds. The conversion of CO2 into formate offers key advantages for carbon recycling, and formate dehydrogenase (FDH) enzymes are at the centre of intense research, due to the âgreenâ advantages the bioconversion can offer, namely substrate and product selectivity and specificity, in reactions run at ambient temperature and pressure and neutral pH. In this chapter, we describe the remarkable recent progress towards efficient and selective FDH-catalysed CO2 reduction to formate. We focus on the enzymes, discussing their structure and mechanism of action. Selected promising studies and successful proof of concepts of FDH-dependent CO2 reduction to formate and beyond are discussed, to highlight the power of FDHs and the challenges this CO2 bioconversion still faces.publishersversionpublishe
Executive difficulties in Developmental Coordination Disorder: Methodological issues and future directions
Motor skills and cognition have often been studied separately, but there is increasing understanding of the close relationship between these abilities over development. Motor coordination difficulties are central to the diagnosis of Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), and recent evidence suggests that certain cognitive processes, known as âexecutive functionsâ, may be affected in individuals with this neurodevelopmental disorder. In this article, we review the research concerning executive functions in DCD, considering behavioural, neuroimaging and questionnaire studies of a range of processes. We highlight methodological issues relating to our current understanding of executive functioning difficulties in DCD, including problems with interpretation of results based on the tasks used. We suggest future directions for research in this area, including the relationship of laboratory research to interventions within âreal-worldâ contexts
