Through extensive primary research and the analysis of a diverse range visual materials, this study provides the first comprehensive investigation of royal imagery in colonial Victoria. Challenging prevailing assumptions about the dissemination of imperial visual culture, the research presented here demonstrates that the circulation and reception of royal imagery was primarily driven by local initiative rather than the royal household or colonial administration in Britain. This finding reframes our understanding of how royal imagery operated in practice, suggesting a more dynamic and locally determined process than previously recognised. Across three broad areas of analysis – government, art, and public ceremony – this thesis examines the manifestation and reception of the royal image in colonial Victorian society, tracing the evolution of this imagery alongside the development of the colony. Prominent public works of art depicting the Queen and members of the royal family as well as more ephemeral and temporary royal imagery are considered with an especial focus on the role of identity making, ceremony and ritual, gender and notions of visual reproduction and replication. Acknowledging the contested place that the royal image continues to occupy in Victoria today, it is suggested that the findings presented here provide a valuable historical context for contemporary debates about the enduring legacy of colonialism within the sites of the former British Empire
