Artificial Cavity Box Use by Eastern Screech Owl, Otus asio

    Get PDF
Screech owl use of 29 artificial cavity boxes placed in wooded habitat on a 14.6 hectare study area in east central Illinois was monitored from 1975 through 1993. A total of 28 screech owls were captured a total of 155 times. Two to 4 adults were usually present and 3 broods were reared in the boxes. The time between first and last capture of birds taken 4 or more times ranged from 270 to 2589 days (average 1740 days). Home range of 5 owls captured 8 to 17 times ranged from 0.45 to 6.0 ha. Cavity boxes were used more in the winter. There was little preference for boxes in any wooded habitat and variations in cavity box size, height of placement, and orientation were of little or no importance

Finch, Burney, Barbauld and the Brontes: feminine identity

    Get PDF
Modern readers of literature have occasionally noticed similarities in the themes and imagery of British women writers. These similarities have been argued as springing from either a shared cultural heritage or a gender-specific biological experience. Proponents of the \u27nurture\u27 camp suggest that common life experiences within western culture, including a shared literary history, political invisibility, and domestic responsibilities which set definite limits on intellectual pursuits worked to create in these women a shared consciousness, intimately connected to their personal identities, which encodes a distinctly feminine imprint on much of their work. Proponents of the \u27nature\u27 camp, on the other hand, suggest that not cultural experience, per se, but the biological differences between men and women are largely responsible for the similarities in women\u27s writing

Capturing what and why in healthcare innovation

Funding: Dr Davis’ time was funded from a collaborative project between University of Dundee; Tayside Academic Health Sciences Partnership; Medtronic; Scottish Enterprise; National Centre for Universities and Business.Understandings of innovation usually encompass multiple overlapping aspects, putting innovation terminology at risk of vagueness and overuse. However, innovation concepts are expected to remain powerful and useful in healthcare beyond the pandemic and into the future, so clarity will be helpful for effective leadership. To disentangle and disambiguate meanings within innovation, we offer a framework that captures and simplifies foundational substance within innovation concepts. Our method is an overview review of innovation literature from the 5 years preceding COVID-19. 51 sources were sampled and analysed for explicit definitions of healthcare innovation. Drawing on broad themes suggested from previous reviews, and gathering specific themes emergent from this literary dataset, we focused on categorising the nature of innovations (the what) and reasons given for them (the why). We identified 4 categories of what (ideas, artefacts, practice/process and structure) and 10 categories of why (economic value, practical value, experience, resource use, equity/accessibility, sustainability, behaviour change, specific-problem solving, self-justifying renewal and improved health). These categories reflect contrasting priorities and values, but do not substantially interfere or occlude each other. They can freely be additively combined to create composite definitions. This conceptual scheme affords insight and clarity for creating precise meanings, and making critical sense of imprecision, around innovation. Improved communication and clear shared understandings around innovative intentions, policies and practices cannot but improve the chances of enhanced outcomes. The all-inclusive character of this scheme leaves space for considering the limits of innovation, and notwithstanding well-established critiques, provides a basis for clarity in ongoing usage.PostprintPeer reviewe

Immune-Related Adverse Event Management for Oncology Patients

    Get PDF
Rapid advances in cancer immunotherapy using Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors have led to significantly improved survival of patients. Immunotherapy is also associated with multiple immune-related adverse events (irAE’s). The purpose of this research is to determine if reinforced patient education regarding early recognition/management of side effects/adverse events decreases serious immune-related events. It is hypothesized that utilizing a patient education plan may determine if these interventions can manage immune-related adverse events and thereby decrease the severity of these events. Our team reviewed literature addressing follow-up care for Oncology patients receiving Immunotherapy. To promote efficient management of immune-related adverse events several major oncology organizations (including Oncology Nursing Society) have published guidelines for diagnosis, grading, treatment and care of patients receiving immunotherapy. However, follow-up care has not been systematically studied. The results of the literature discussed the importance of patient education, early detection and reporting of side effects as well as continued surveillance after completion of treatment to detect delayed toxicities. From the literature reviewed, it is concluded that early patient reporting of side effects/adverse events demonstrates an increase in resolution and improved management of adverse events during treatment with immunotherapy. However, further studies need to be conducted. The implications of the research inspired our team to pursue development of comprehensive immunotherapy guidelines for telephone triage.https://scholar.rochesterregional.org/nursingresearchday/1017/thumbnail.jp

    Imported Fire Ants

    Get PDF
Imported fire ants (Order Hymenoptera, Family Formicidae) (IFA) are social insects representing two South American ant species: the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) and black imported fire ant (Solenopsis richteri Forel), along with their hybrid offspring. IFA are native to South America, where their colonies are kept in check by native competitors, predators, and parasites. However, they have invaded other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S., causing agricultural, ecological, economical, nuisance, and public health problems, which are described in more detail in this fact sheet. Management is also addressed
