Automated Synthesis of Dynamically Corrected Quantum Gates
We address the problem of constructing dynamically corrected gates for
non-Markovian open quantum systems in settings where limitations on the
available control inputs and/or the presence of control noise make existing
analytical approaches unfeasible. By focusing on the important case of
singlet-triplet electron spin qubits, we show how ideas from optimal control
theory may be used to automate the synthesis of dynamically corrected gates
that simultaneously minimize the system's sensitivity against both decoherence
and control errors. Explicit sequences for effecting robust single-qubit
rotations subject to realistic timing and pulse-shaping constraints are
provided, which can deliver substantially improved gate fidelity for
state-of-the-art experimental capabilities.Comment: 5 pages; further restructure and expansio
Towards optimized suppression of dephasing in systems subject to pulse timing constraints
We investigate the effectiveness of different dynamical decoupling protocols
for storage of a single qubit in the presence of a purely dephasing bosonic
bath, with emphasis on comparing quantum coherence preservation under uniform
vs. non-uniform delay times between pulses. In the limit of instantaneous
bit-flip pulses, this is accomplished by establishing a new representation of
the controlled qubit evolution, where the resulting decoherence behaviour is
directly expressed in terms of the free evolution. Simple analytical
expressions are given to approximate the long- and short- term coherence
behaviour for both ohmic and supra-ohmic environments. We focus on systems with
physical constraints on achievable time delays, with emphasis on pure dephasing
of excitonic qubits in quantum dots. Our analysis shows that little advantage
of high-level decoupling schemes based on concatenated or optimal design is to
be expected if operational constraints prevent pulses to be applied
sufficiently fast. In such constrained scenarios, we demonstrate how simple
modifications of repeated periodic echo protocols can offer significantly
improved coherence preservation in realistic parameter regimes.Comment: 13 figures,1 tabl
Nilpotent polynomials approach to four-qubit entanglement
We apply the general formalism of nilpotent polynomials [Mandilara et al,
Phys. Rev. A 74, 022331 (2006)] to the problem of pure-state multipartite
entanglement classification in four qubits. In addition to establishing contact
with existing results, we explicitly show how the nilpotent formalism naturally
suggests constructions of entanglement measures invariant under the required
unitary or invertible class of local operations. A candidate measure of
fourpartite entanglement is also suggested, and its behavior numerically tested
on random pure states.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. Finalised versio
Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, MOGUĆI UTJECAJ OKOLIŠNIH ČIMBENIKA I NAVODNJAVANJA KUKURUZA NA VELIČINU LIČINKI U SJEVEROZAPADNOJ ITALIJI
Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, larvae were collected in different irrigated maize fields in Brescia Province in Northwestern Italy in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Head capsule widths, considered a valid indicator of larval instar stage, were measured for 2063 specimens and data for the three years were combined and grouped in increments of 20 µm width sizes. Frequency of larvae within each grouping was graphed as a histogram and three distinct peaks, interpreted to represent the peak frequency of the head capsule widths of the three larval instars, were observed. Assuming a normal distribution of head capsule widths, a multiple nonlinear Gaussian curve regression was applied to the frequency histogram. The peaks of the fitted normal curves were 227 ± 3 µm, 353 ± 6 µm, and 519 ± 3 µm for the first, second and third instars, respectively. These values are higher than those reported by other authors in similar studies. The possible impact of irrigation and other environmental factors is discussed. Quantum Information Encoding, Protection, and Correction from Trace-Norm Isometries
We introduce the notion of trace-norm isometric encoding and explore its
implications for passive and active methods to protect quantum information
against errors. Beside providing an operational foundations to the "subsystems
principle" [E. Knill, Phys. Rev. A 74, 042301 (2006)] for faithfully realizing
quantum information in physical systems, our approach allows additional
explicit connections between noiseless, protectable, and correctable quantum
codes to be identified. Robustness properties of isometric encodings against
imperfect initialization and/or deviations from the intended error models are
also analyzed.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur
Dynamical control of electron spin coherence in a quantum dot
We investigate the performance of dynamical decoupling methods at suppressing
electron spin decoherence from a low-temperature nuclear spin reservoir in a
quantum dot. The controlled dynamics is studied through exact numerical
simulation, with emphasis on realistic pulse delays and long-time limit. Our
results show that optimal performance for this system is attained by a periodic
protocol exploiting concatenated design, with control rates substantially
slower than expected from the upper spectral cutoff of the bath. For a known
initial electron spin state, coherence can saturate at long times, signaling
the creation of a stable ``spin-locked'' decoherence-free subspace. Analytical
insight on saturation is obtained for a simple echo protocol, in good agreement
with numerical results.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures with 3 of them in colo
Swiss EMBnet node web server
EMBnet is a consortium of collaborating bioinformatics groups located mainly within Europe (http://www.embnet.org). Each member country is represented by a ‘node', a group responsible for the maintenance of local services for their users (e.g. education, training, software, database distribution, technical support, helpdesk). Among these services a web portal with links and access to locally developed and maintained software is essential and different for each node. Our web portal targets biomedical scientists in Switzerland and elsewhere, offering them access to a collection of important sequence analysis tools mirrored from other sites or developed locally. We describe here the Swiss EMBnet node web site (http://www.ch.embnet.org), which presents a number of original services not available anywhere els
A divergent canonical WNT-signaling pathway regulates microtubule dynamics: Dishevelled signals locally to stabilize microtubules
Dishevelled (DVL) is associated with axonal microtubules and regulates microtubule stability through the inhibition of the serine/threonine kinase, glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β). In the canonical WNT pathway, the negative regulator Axin forms a complex with β-catenin and GSK-3β, resulting in β-catenin degradation. Inhibition of GSK-3β by DVL increases β-catenin stability and TCF transcriptional activation. Here, we show that Axin associates with microtubules and unexpectedly stabilizes microtubules through DVL. In turn, DVL stabilizes microtubules by inhibiting GSK-3β through a transcription- and β-catenin–independent pathway. More importantly, axonal microtubules are stabilized after DVL localizes to axons. Increased microtubule stability is correlated with a decrease in GSK-3β–mediated phosphorylation of MAP-1B. We propose a model in which Axin, through DVL, stabilizes microtubules by inhibiting a pool of GSK-3β, resulting in local changes in the phosphorylation of cellular targets. Our data indicate a bifurcation in the so-called canonical WNT-signaling pathway to regulate microtubule stability
Role of miR-200c in myogenic differentiation impairment via p66Shc: implication in skeletal muscle regeneration of dystrophic mdx mice
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disease associated with mutations of Dystrophin gene that regulate myofiber integrity and muscle degeneration, characterized by oxidative stress increase. We previously published that reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce miR-200c that is responsible for apoptosis and senescence. Moreover, we demonstrated that miR-200c increases ROS production and phosphorylates p66Shc in Ser-36. p66Shc plays an important role in muscle differentiation; we previously showed that p66Shc(-/-) muscle satellite cells display lower oxidative stress levels and higher proliferation rate and differentiated faster than wild-type (wt) cells. Moreover, myogenic conversion, induced by MyoD overexpression, is more efficient in p66Shc(-/-) fibroblasts compared to wt cells. Herein, we report that miR-200c overexpression in cultured myoblasts impairs skeletal muscle differentiation. Further, its overexpression in differentiated myotubes decreases differentiation indexes. Moreover, anti-miR-200c treatment ameliorates myogenic differentiation. In keeping, we found that miR-200c and p66Shc Ser-36 phosphorylation increase in mdx muscles. In conclusion, miR-200c inhibits muscle differentiation, whereas its inhibition ameliorates differentiation and its expression levels are increased in mdx mice and in differentiated human myoblasts of DMD. Therefore, miR-200c might be responsible for muscle wasting and myotube loss, most probably via a p66Shc-dependent mechanism in a pathological disease such as DMD
