Modes of representation in contemporary Galician visual poetry

    Get PDF
Visual poetry in Galicia had a plural and discontinuous existence in the twentieth century'! Its development in Galicia follows national (Spanish) and international artistic practices, while also engaging in the configuration of a local, national, and transnational Galician identity. The practice of different styles of visual poetry shows a rich line of creativity, especially in the last four decades. Their approaches coincide with sociocultural and economic changes in Spain, such as the end of the dictatorship in 1975, the consequent normalization of the Galician language, and more recently the progressive influence of globalization. This essay considers how current Galician visual poets reconceptualize these issues in the context of an international cultural and visual aesthetics

Magnetism and topological phases in an interacting decorated honeycomb lattice with spin-orbit coupling

We study the interplay between spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Coulomb repulsion in a Hubbard model on a decorated honeycomb lattice which leads to a plethora of phases. While a quantum spin hall insulator is stable at weak Coulomb repulsion and moderate SOC, a semimetallic phase emerges at large SOC in a broad range of Coulomb repulsion. This semimetallic phase has topological properties not observed in conventional metals such as a finite, non-quantized spin Hall conductivity. At large Coulomb repulsion and negligible spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations stabilize a resonance valence bond (RVB) spin liquid state in contrast to the classical antiferromagnetic state predicted by mean-field theory. Under sufficiently strong SOC, such RVB state is transformed into a magnetic insulator consisting on S~3/2 localized moments on a honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic order and topological features.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

Fast and stable contour integration for high order divided differences via elliptic functions

In this paper, we will present a new method for evaluating high order divided differences for certain classes of analytic, possibly, operator valued functions. This is a classical problem in numerical mathematics but also arises in new applications such as, e.g., the use of generalized convolution quadrature to solve retarded potential integral equations. The functions which we will consider are allowed to grow exponentially to the left complex half plane, polynomially to the right half plane and have an oscillatory behaviour with increasing imaginary part. The interpolation points are scattered in a large real interval. Our approach is based on the representation of divided differences as contour integral and we will employ a subtle parameterization of the contour in combination with a quadrature approximation by the trapezoidal rule

The Learning of the subject Biology in a Master in Biomedical Physics

BIOLOGY is a dynamic and fascinating science. The study of this subject is an amazing trip for all the students that have a first contact with this subject. Here, we present the development of the study and learning experience of this subject belonging to an area of knowledge that is different to the training curriculum of students who have studied Physics during their degree period. We have taken a real example, the “Elements of Biology” subject, which is taught as part of the Official Biomedical Physics Master, at the Physics Faculty, of the Complutense University of Madrid, since the course 2006/07. Its main objective is to give to the student an understanding how the Physics can have numerous applications in the Biomedical Sciences area, giving the basic training to develop a professional, academic or research career. The results obtained when we use new virtual tools combined with the classical learning show that there is a clear increase in the number of persons that take and pass the final exam. On the other hand, this new learning strategy is well received by the students and this is translated to a higher participation and a decrease of the giving the subject u
