    Hopf measuring comonoids and enrichment

We study the existence of universal measuring comonoids P(A,B)P(A,B) for a pair of monoids AA, BB in a braided monoidal closed category, and the associated enrichment of a category of monoids over the monoidal category of comonoids. In symmetric categories, we show that if AA is a bimonoid and BB is a commutative monoid, then P(A,B)P(A,B) is a bimonoid; in addition, if AA is a cocommutative Hopf monoid then P(A,B)P(A,B) always is Hopf. If AA is a Hopf monoid, not necessarily cocommutative, then P(A,B)P(A,B) is Hopf if the fundamental theorem of comodules holds; to prove this we give an alternative description of the dualizable P(A,B)P(A,B)-comodules and use the theory of Hopf (co)monads. We explore the examples of universal measuring comonoids in vector spaces and graded spaces.Comment: 30 pages. Version 2: re-arrangement of material; expansion of previous section 6, splitting into current sections 6,7,8; fix of graded algebras example, section 11; appendix removed; other minor fixes and edit

Christina Garcia Lopez considers embodied prayer as a place for belonging in There There by Tommy Orange instead of places that are geographically rooted

High School Biology in the Age of the Next Generation Science Standards: A Student-Centered Approach

    Get PDF
The article describes a biology teacher’s approach to inquiry-based instruction grounded in a sociocultural learning perspective.  The course designed by the Biology Teacher includes references to the literature and epistemic practice-based routines and procedures.  The urban students in this study integrate the practices to design an investigation to solve a problem with soil quality.  Specific details describe the epistemic practices enacted by the students and their responses to the learning experience.  The study illustrates how the Biology Teacher used the students’ culture, experiences and knowledge to promote meaningful science practice related to the lives of the students.  The study was conducted in an urban environment; however, approaches are conducive to science instruction in all NGSS classrooms

Maximizing Sharability and Persuasiveness on Web 2.0

Online marketing efforts usually focus on the persuasiveness or sharability of a message. However, research has not established where these two concepts overlap. The current study explores this overlap. Web 2.0 platforms facilitate the delivery of different content and statistics to convey the persuasiveness and the sharability. An original experiment varied message quality (high argument strength, direct message, and emotional message) and web cues (i.e., ratio of views, likes, and shares) to signal self-presentation (favorable and unfavorable). Prospective participants will view mock webpages for internet news and donation collection, followed by measures of the content persuasiveness and sharability

Understanding Barriers to Leaving Abusive Military Relationships

This research investigates intimate partner cyber abuse (IPCA), physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence (IPV) in which the abuser is on active duty, reserve, or a veteran service member within the United States Armed Forces. Using an online survey, I gathered quantitative and qualitative data. I also presented a case study of a woman who experienced IPV within her relationship with a United States Armed Forces member. Specifically, I (1) explored the barriers that this victim encountered when seeking help or leaving the abusive relationship that may be unique to the military context, and (2) examined the context of her experiences with the different barriers and how they affected her help-seeking behavior. I found that those in a previous relationship with a member of the United States Armed Forces are more likely to experience IPV than those in a current relationship. Also, in the case study, I found that the individual sought informal help rather than formal help and faced internal barriers over external barriers

Mars Aquarius Mission and Titan Explorer

    Get PDF
The Mars Aquarius Mission is designed to carry out several scientific studies of the surface and subsurface of Mars with an emphasis on locating subterranean water. This mission is a precursor to a manned mission to Mars. A manned mission will require an extended stay on the planet's surface, and an accessible source of water will greatly simplify life support requirements. Using data from previous Mars observations, four sites were selected as possible locations of subsurface water. The Aquarius spacecraft carries one penetrator for each of these sites
