EN-US: Frequently, leptospirosis is related to reproductive problems in livestock, such as abortion, increased embryonic mortality and stillbirths. Unfortunately, there are few reports addressing the prevalence of the disease in cattle in the North of Mato Grosso State (MT), Brazil. The aim of the present study was to determine the presence of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies in cattle in the municipalities of Nova Guarita and Nova Santa Helena, MT. Nine hundred and eighty blood samples were taken from cows aged ≥24 months from 49 farms slaughtered in Sinop, MT. Microscopic Agglutination Test was used for the detection of anti-Leptospira spp. antibodies. The animal prevalence was 17.9% (95% CI = 15.6-20.5%). The prevalence observed in the municipalities Nova Guarita and Nova Santa Helena was 13.4% (95% CI = 12.8-14.1%) and 23.2% (95% CI = 22.0-24.3%), respectively. The herd prevalence was 83.6% (95% CI = 79.4-87.8%). The most frequent serovar was Wolffi (47.7%), followed by Hardjo (16.1%), Hardjo - Bolivia sample (11.0%), Australis (7.4%), Grippotyphosa (4.6%), Pomona (3.4%), Batavie (3.4%), Autumnalis (1.7%), Icterohaemorrhagiae (1.7%), Hebdomadis (1.1%), Hardjo-bovis (1.1%), and Castellonis (0.5%). Infection by Leptospira spp. is endemic in both municipalities, reinforcing the need for new epidemiological studies to subsidize the control of the disease in Mato Grosso.

Peculiar Broad Absorption Line Quasars found in DPOSS

With the recent release of large (i.e., > hundred million objects), well-calibrated photometric surveys, such as DPOSS, 2MASS, and SDSS, spectroscopic identification of important targets is no longer a simple issue. In order to enhance the returns from a spectroscopic survey, candidate sources are often preferentially selected to be of interest, such as brown dwarfs or high redshift quasars. This approach, while useful for targeted projects, risks missing new or unusual species. We have, as a result, taken the alternative path of spectroscopically identifying interesting sources with the sole criterion being that they are in low density areas of the g - r and r - i color-space defined by the DPOSS survey. In this paper, we present three peculiar broad absorption line quasars that were discovered during this spectroscopic survey, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach. PSS J0052+2405 is an Iron LoBAL quasar at a redshift z = 2.4512 with very broad absorption from many species. PSS J0141+3334 is a reddened LoBAL quasar at z = 3.005 with no obvious emission lines. PSS J1537+1227 is a Iron LoBAL at a redshift of z = 1.212 with strong narrow Mgii and Feii emission. Follow-up high resolution spectroscopy of these three quasars promises to improve our understanding of BAL quasars. The sensitivity of particular parameter spaces, in this case a two-color space, to the redshift of these three sources is dramatic, raising questions about traditional techniques of defining quasar populations for statistical analysis.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, Accepted to the Astronomical Journa

Use of point of view cameras for welfare management in extensive grazing systems

Grazing patterns can be a major indicator for welfare assessment in extensive systems. The aim of this study was to test animal-borne video as a method to evaluate sheep grazing behavior. To test the changes in grazing duration, grazing frequency and grazing rate, we used wide angle cameras (Go-Pro and infra-red night vision) to access diurnal and nocturnal grazing activities of ewes in a native sward, during two weeks in late spring, the season with greatest changes in weather and vegetative growth. Three ewes were chosen from a flock of 15 animals for focal observation. The foraging behaviour of the entire flock were recorded by scan sampling with a 10-minute interval. Grazing bout duration increased significantly between the first (44.6 ± 41.4 s) and the second week (94.0 ± 57.0 s) (F = 10.295, P<0.05). Conversely, grazing bout duration differed among grazing hours (F = 4.523, P<0.05), with a peak for the dusk grazing period (128.1 ± 88.8 s). Nocturnal grazing did not differ significantly for any of the grazing parameters, although a general trend for longer grazing duration through time was observed. Sheep spend the hot part of the day lying in shade under trees and use more than one tree as resting areas. A significant correlation was shown to exist between the grazing behaviour estimated from focal sampling with video cameras and the scan sampling (r2=0.83). We concluded that animal-borne video cameras are a method appropriate for assessing sheep variations of grazing behaviour structure allowing to understand differences of adaptive grazing patterns that can be useful for welfare management in extensive systems

    5D Attractors with Higher Derivatives

We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.Comment: 18 pages, harvma
