The subscapular artery and the thoracodorsal branch: an anatomical study
The motive for this research was the use of the muscles of the scapular region
in transposition, transplantation and reparative surgery and the need for more
detailed knowledge of the blood supply to these muscles. In addition, the subscapular
arterial tree may be used as a source of microvascular grafts to replace
damaged or diseased portions of arteries, particularly in the hand and forearm.
The research was conducted on 60 sides of corpses of adults of both sexes.
It was noticed that the subscapular artery was present in 96.7% of cases and
originated laterally to the pectoralis minor muscle in 76.7% of cases. The average
calibre was 5.0 mm, and in 73.2% of cases it measured between 4.0 and
5.9 mm. The average length was 18.0 mm, ranging from 10.0 to 29.9 mm
(76.7%). It presented in its course important relations with the axillary nerve
(69%) and with the radial nerve (82.8%). Its branches were collateral (subscapular
muscle - 61.3%) and terminal (except for the circumflex scapular artery),
leading to the following muscles: serratus anterior (43.9%), latissimus dorsi
(27.6%), and subscapular (23.3%). The thoracodorsal artery, one of the terminal
branches, most frequently showed a calibre of between 2.0 and 3.9 mm
(70.3%), collateral branches in 85.0%, was mainly distributed to the subscapular
muscle (36.7%) and to the serratus anterior muscle (29.0%) and had terminal
branches to the following muscles: latissimus dorsi (44.1%), serratus anterior
(40.5%) and the subscapular (12.5%). The serratus anterior muscle received
one branch in 39.5% and two branches in 41.9%, while the latissimus dorsi
muscle received one branch in 66.7% and two branches in 23.1%. (Folia Morphol

a Beira Interior.

Nutrient status and organic matter content of newly-established peach orchards in central Portugal
Peach production is an important agricultural activity in the center of Portugal, which is the main region of stone fruit production. This region is characterized by hot and dry summers, that can actively accelerate the organic matter degradation and, thus, increase the susceptibility to erosion and decrease the soil capacity to retain nutrients. To evaluate the relationship of peach production activity and soil characteristics, a long-term project was installed based on 31 peach orchards covering the main peach production area. The main objective was to find out the influence of peach production activity on soil characteristics with special reference on organic matter content. Orchards were monitored since establishment, collecting soil samples at establishment time and after 4 years. Plant development was monitored annually by the evaluation of trunk cross-sectional area and nutrition status by foliar analysis at 100 to 120 days after blooming. Simultaneously, weed development in the row and inter-row was evaluated. Results indicated that peach orchards are very heterogeneous over the first years after planting. After 4 years from the initial 31 orchards, only 23 remained, corresponding to 26% of uprooting orchards, mainly related with Pseudomonas syringae complex incidence. In90% of the orchards the soil content in potassium was classified as high (100-200 mg kg-1; LQARS, 2006) and very high (>200mgkg1; LQARS, 2006). Nevertheless, according to nutritional analysis, the leaf potassium content was classified as low in 35% of the orchards, considering the reference interval of 2to 3% for this nutrient. Nitrogen leaf content was below reference interval in17% of the orchards, and in 22% was above this interval. All orchards use weed cover at inter-rows, mowed regularly. Weeds were controlled in rows using herbicides. Considering the 23 orchards, Organic Matter content increased 0.68% in the row and 0.18% in the interrow, after 4 years.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Soil fertility of peach orchards at installation and first year plant growth
In Portugal the main peach (Prunus persica) production area is located in the central region of the country, where cherry and almond production coexist. This region is characterized by mild winters and dry hot summers. The annual rainfall ranges from 600 mm to 800 mm and the maximum temperature sometimes rises up the 40ºC. These climatic conditions are favorable to soil organic matter degradation. However, techniques of soil maintenance of no row mobilization and soil grass cover between rows used in peach orchards can have a positive effect on soil organic matter content as well as on soil fertility. In order to monitor the effect of orchard management on soil fertility we monitored 30 peach orchards in the Beira Interior region through an experimental unit/orchard, marked just after orchard installation. In each experimental unit soil samples were collected in planted row (1 m from the marked plant) and in the space between rows (2 m from the marked plant), to monitor both the effects of orchard management of row and between row space. All the sampling points were geo-referenced. After the first cycle, plant vigor was evaluated by Trunk Sectional Area (TSA) and correlated with soil fertility parameters and agricultural practices. The main results indicate that just after plantation organic matter content was 2.8% and there were no significant differences between row and between row samples. The average soil pH was 6.3 in row and 6.1 between rows. The average P2O5 content was 201 mg.kg-1 in row and 114 mg.kg-1 between rows. K2O content was 404 mg.kg-1 in row and 242 mg.kg-1 between rows. These results indicate that at plantation time, there was deep fertilization in the rows. Principal Component Analysis indicates that first year plant growth was negatively correlated to the presence of weeds during first annual cycle and to soil copper content.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
