#Black Boy Joy: The College Aspirations of Rural Black Male Students

Too often research on Black boys emanate from deficit orientations and take a problem centered approach which overemphasizes stereotypes or pathologizes Black male students, overlooking their aspirations and successes. Utilizing the High School Longitudinal Survey of 2009 (HSLS: 09), we examine the postsecondary goals of Black male ninth graders as well as the relationships among their educational aspirations, college knowledge, and supportive school personnel using Community Cultural Wealth as the conceptual framework. We found that the educational aspirations of Black male ninth graders are high; however, their knowledge of college falls short of their educational aspirations and their relationships with teachers and school counselors. We discuss the strengths, attributes, and systems of support that are useful to rural Black male students as they transition through secondary education to post-secondary settings and call for a paradigmatic shift using family-school-community partnerships based on the finding

Pharmacogenetics of anticancer drugs in non-Hodgkin lymphomas

The variability of tumour responses to chemotherapeutic agents is a topic of major interest in current oncology research. Advances in the knowledge of molecular pathology of cancer make available strategies by which tumour cells can be profiled for their genetic background in order to select anticancer agents that might selectively kill cells in a molecular context that matches the mechanism of action of drugs. The next generation of anticancer treatments might thus be tailored on the basis of the numerous molecular alterations identified in tumour cells of a particular patient. However, to exploit these alterations, it is necessary to understand how they influence the cellular pathways that control the sensitivity or, conversely, resistance to chemotherapeutic agents. The aim of this article is to outline major genetic abnormalities in non-Hodgkin lymphomas that can be used to streamline anticancer drug selection and to underscore the major role of pharmacogenetics, which studies the interactions between genetic background and drug activity, to the prediction of likelihood of response and identification of potential new targets for pharmacological intervention. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign  http://www.bjcancer.co

Sexual education is a lesson given to someone to find out various information related to the development of sexuality. In general, sexual education is clear and correct information related to sexuality, which includes the process of conception, pregnancy to birth, sexual behavior, sexual relations, and aspects of health, psychology and society. sex education given to children from an early age is a form of effort to provide correct knowledge to children about sex itself. Relational Cultural Theory: A Guiding Framework for Study Abroad Experiences

Faculty led-study abroad programs promote cultural competence and professional and personal development for students. However, students from historically marginalized and underrepresented groups do not participate in these experiences at the same rate as students from majority cultures. Counselor educators must seek ways to recruit diverse populations to promote equity in and access to international education experiences. Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) provides a guiding framework for counselor educators to diversify study abroad programs while also attending to cultural and power dynamics. Implications for counselor educators and recommendations for future research are also included

Rural Cultural Wealth in African Education

Globally, rural communities are facing varied issues that impact the holistic well-being of residents ranging from the need to increase access to health and educational resources to addressing food and housing insecurities. In this manuscript, we expound upon the rural cultural wealth conceptual framework to demonstrate the application of this conceptual framework globally. Using the Nigerian context, we illustrate how the resourcefulness, ingenuity, familism, and unity found within rural communities can be harnessed to improve rural education

Sorority and Fraternity Attitudes Towards Initiation and Hazing

This study assessed students’ attitudes towards fraternity and sorority intake processes at a regional Mid-Atlantic University (MU) to gain an understanding of overall attitudes and discern whether students distinguish differences between hazing and initiation procedures. Study results indicated that students understand the general purpose of initiation and the dangers of hazing; however, a general understanding may not translate to an understanding of the specifics activities involved in new member initiation processes. Study results specified differences in understanding initiation and hazing are greatest by gender and fraternity/ sorority council. Implications for higher education research and student affairs practice are discussed

The Continued Need for Modeling and Scaled Testing to Advance the Hanford Tank Waste Mission

Hanford tank wastes are chemically complex slurries of liquids and solids that can exhibit changes in rheological behavior during retrieval and processing. The Hanford Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) recently abandoned its planned approach to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) supported by testing at less than full scale to verify the design of vessels that process these wastes within the plant. The commercial CFD tool selected was deemed too difficult to validate to the degree necessary for use in the design of a nuclear facility. Alternative, but somewhat immature, CFD tools are available that can simulate multiphase flow of non-Newtonian fluids. Yet both CFD and scaled testing can play an important role in advancing the Hanford tank waste mission—in supporting the new verification approach, which is to conduct testing in actual plant vessels; in supporting waste feed delivery, where scaled testing is ongoing; as a fallback approach to design verification if the Full Scale Vessel Testing Program is deemed too costly and time-consuming; to troubleshoot problems during commissioning and operation of the plant; and to evaluate the effects of any proposed changes in operating conditions in the future to optimize plant performance
