The Use of Physician Assistants for Health and Wellness in Aging Populations Desiree Longmire, Depts. of Kinesiology and Health Science, Biology, & Chemistry, with Dr. Christine Booker, Dept. of Kinesiology and Health Science I conducted a study to expand my research on the demographics of Physician Assistant (PA) programs and how the programs can benefit from having Gerontology in their curriculum. I was able to record data on an excel spreadsheet on the demographics and pass rate scores of PA program graduates. This data was used to assess if PA programs have Gerontology in their curriculum as separate courses. Also, the data was used to determine if there is a correlation of pass rates of PA programs with more diverse students in specific geographical regions that serve aging populations. This information helps fill the gap in the literature by ascertaining the significance of the use of more diverse PA’s in the health care industry and their ability to impact care for the health and wellness of the aging population.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/uresposters/1345/thumbnail.jp

Changing Competitiveness of the Wheat Sector of Kazakhstan and Sources of Future Productivity Growth

Economic incentives in Kazakhstan have been radically reshaped since the Soviet era ended in 1991. In the first phase of transition, the economy and agricultural sectors declined by 40-50%. Overall economic growth refused in 1996, and agriculture is likely to enter a recovery phase soon. The economy of Kazakhstan is undergoing rapid structural change, and agriculture is experiencing strong inter-sectoral competition. The change to market-oriented and commercially-driven agriculture has altered fundamentally the incentives faced by Kazakhstan's wheat farmers. They have reduced use of inputs sharply because of the need to pay market prices for fertilizer, fuel, and other inputs, while severely curtailing investment in machinery and their farms generally. There is considerable potential for productivity improvements and adoption of new technologies in the wheat production and marketing sectors. Farmers are likely to resume investment only slowly and are likely to adopt only those changes that are low cost and which are based on low-input methods of production. Assessed under 1998 conditions, these wheat growing methods are about 20% more competitive than the energy and input-intensive technologies of the Soviet era. Because of the new commercial pressures brought on by the opening of the Kazakhstan economy to global markets, the production methods of the Soviet era are no longer relevant to Kazakhstan's wheat farmers. A fundamental change of thinking and approach to the situation faced by farmers is required in research, extension, training and education. The new commercial circumstances of agriculture call for strategic analysis of the future for Kazakhstan's farming and of related policies, research and education. Action is required in these areas to reinvigorate Kazakhstan's agriculture, and programs should commence as soon as possible. The future for wheat in Kazakhstan is promising, providing there is concerted and strategic change in the mindsets, culture, and approaches of those working in and supporting the wheat industry.Crop Production/Industries,

Is hip hop dead? We began to ask ourselves this question many years after the hip hop culture emerged. Due to the sudden shift in function from social protest and community building to gross commercialism, the images of black masculinity within the hip hop world began to change, and people began to wonder about the viability of hip hop’s existence. But how can an entire culture that is ever changing and constantly shifting be cast to an eternity of non-existence? The question in itself would imply that those who critique the hip hop cultural form have the power to give it life or death. On the contrary, the very reason hip hop lives today is because of the artists and their critiques on society. Only when the two stop working in conjunction with each other will hip hop “die” so-to-speak

An exploration of the impact of teachers\u27 instructional practices in teaching phonemic awareness to kindergarten and first grade students

    Get PDF
This ten week study examined the impact of the teachers’ instructional strategies in teaching phonemic awareness to kindergarten and first grade students. Three questions were explored. These questions were: (a) How do teachers determine the appropriate instructional strategies to use in teaching phonemic awareness?, (b) What are the similarities and differences that each teacher demonstrates in implementing appropriate instructional strategies in teaching phonemic awareness?, and (c) How have the teachers’ efforts in implementing a Reading First program been rewarded? The participants in this study are two first grade teachers, two kindergarten teachers, and one kindergarten and first grade reading interventionist. Qualitative methods of single, cross case analysis were utilized for this study with data sources that included: field notes, responses from questionnaires, and the researcher’s observations. During the 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction, the teachers were required to teach explicitly and systematic phonemic awareness from the prescribed method in the reading manual. The prescribed method consisted of verbatim scripts of: what the teachers should say, how the teachers should say it, and the answer for the students’ response. Data gathered showed that teachers used explicit and systematic instructional strategies when teaching phonemic awareness from the prescribed reading series; however, some teachers used additional instructional strategies to teach phonemic awareness. There were differences and similarities that were prevalent across grade levels. The differences of the instructional strategies consisted of utilization of hand motion and other techniques and using phonemic awareness in context. The similarities of the strategies utilized included sounding out individual phonemes, segmenting phonemes, phoneme counting, and adding, deleting, and substituting phonemes. The teachers were intrinsically motivated by their students’ progression. The teachers’ ability to impact phonemic awareness instruction is indirectly a result of their desire to be adequately prepared to deliver phonemic awareness instruction. The students’ satisfactory progress in attaining the appropriate reading level suggests that the teachers positively impacted instruction

A Poetry Unit for Middle School Students

The focus of this project was to review the available research on using poetry as a method for teaching literary terms, enhancing comprehension, and developing creative writing skills. The results of the research show that there is a need for poetry instruction and that including this instruction in the middle school provides remarkable benefits for students. Poetry is suitable for the varying levels of ability found within the classroom. The project includes a guide providing teachers with activities to implement a poetry unit
