Parametric fit to electron transport properties
Experimental data acquired over the past few years were gathered, and parametric fits made to these data. The following properties of electron transport were represented by simple functions of atomic number and energy: transmitted electron number, transmitted electron spectra, range, backscatter coefficient, angular distribution, energy deposition, bremsstrahlung intensity and energy spectra, and bremsstrahlung angular distribution and photon attenuation. The formulas cover the energy ranges of interest in space shielding problems (0.1 to 10.0 MeV). Procedures for using these formulas in practical situations are suggested

Extracellular Enzyme Activity from Hot Springs in Panama
Microbes found in subsurface water and sediment play an important role in biogeochemical cycling. Heterotrophic microbes require extracellular enzymes to cleave bonds of macromolecules, in order to take up and ultimately metabolize organic carbon and nutrients. Geothermal features are characterized by a wide range of temperatures, pH, and other geochemical parameters, and can add to our understanding of microbial effects on fluxes in the carbon cycle. Here we perform enzyme assays to examine microbes from various hot springs in Panama and their enzymatic activity on different substrates. Using temperatures similar to that of the hot springs, we use fluorogenic substrate proxies to assay the potential activities of diverse extracellular enzymes in multiple hydrothermal springs. We will compare extracellular enzyme activities to 16S libraries and metagenomes from the same sites to better understand microbial degradation of polymeric material in these geothermal environments
High Oxygen Packaging System Negatively Affects Color Stability and Sensory Attributes of Beef Cuts
Beef steaks stored in high-oxygen modified atmosphere packaging (HiOx-MAP) had more discoloration, lipid oxidation, and lower tenderness, juiciness, and flavor during 9 days display compared to the steaks packaged in vacuum (VAC). Therefore, MAP systems with lower oxygen mixture or incorporation of antioxidants through injection enhancement to meat in HiOx-MAP are recommended to minimize oxidation-induced quality deteriorations of beef round muscles
