Thyroid nodules treated with percutaneous radiofrequency thermal ablation: a comparative study
Percutaneous radiofrequency thermal ablation (RTA) was reported as an effective tool for the management of thyroid nodules (TNs). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of RTA and to establish whether they were treatment-related by comparison with a matched, untreated control group
Paramagnetic effect in YBaCuO grain boundary junctions
A detailed investigation of the magnetic response of YBaCuO grain boundary
Josephson junctions has been carried out using both radio-frequency
measurements and Scanning SQUID Microscopy. In a nominally zero-field-cooled
regime we observed a paramagnetic response at low external fields for 45 degree
asymmetric grain boundaries. We argue that the observed phenomenology results
from the d-wave order parameter symmetry and depends on Andreev bound states.Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev.
Multistep, sequential control of the trafficking and function of the multiple sulfatase deficiency gene product, SUMF1 by PDI, ERGIC-53 and ERp44.
Sulfatase modifying factor 1 (SUMF1) encodes for the formylglicine generating enzyme, which activates sulfatases by modifying a key cysteine residue within their catalytic domains. SUMF1 is mutated in patients affected by multiple sulfatase deficiency, a rare recessive disorder in which all sulfatase activities are impaired. Despite the absence of canonical retention/retrieval signals, SUMF1 is largely retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), where it exerts its enzymatic activity on nascent sulfatases. Part of SUMF1 is secreted and paracrinally taken up by distant cells. Here we show that SUMF1 interacts with protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and ERp44, two thioredoxin family members residing in the early secretory pathway, and with ERGIC-53, a lectin that shuttles between the ER and the Golgi. Functional assays reveal that these interactions are crucial for controlling SUMF1 traffic and function. PDI couples SUMF1 retention and activation in the ER. ERGIC-53 and ERp44 act downstream, favoring SUMF1 export from and retrieval to the ER, respectively. Silencing ERGIC-53 causes proteasomal degradation of SUMF1, while down-regulating ERp44 promotes its secretion. When over-expressed, each of three interactors favors intracellular accumulation. Our results reveal a multistep control of SUMF1 trafficking, with sequential interactions dynamically determining ER localization, activity and secretion
HI Fluctuations at Large Redshifts: II - the Signal Expected for GMRT
For the GMRT, we calculate the expected signal from redshifted HI emission at
two frequency bands centered at 610 and 325 MHz. The study focuses on the
visibility-visibility cross-correlations, proposed earlier as the optimal
statistical estimator for detecting and analyzing this signal. These
correlations directly probe the power spectrum of density fluctuations at the
redshift where the radiation originated, and thereby provide a method for
studying the large scale structures at large redshifts. We present detailed
estimates of the correlations expected between the visibilities measured at
different baselines and frequencies. Analytic fitting formulas representing the
salient features of the expected signal are also provided. These will be useful
in planning observations and deciding an optimal strategy for detecting this
signal.Comment: 16 pages including 7 figures, published in JAp
Sinkhole monitoring and early warning: An experimental and successful GB-InSAR application
AbstractSinkholes represent a natural risk that may hit catastrophically without clearly detectible precursors. However, they are often overlooked by people and administrators. Therefore sinkhole monitoring and associated early warnings constitute important research topics but, currently, only a few papers about sinkhole prediction can be found. In this paper an experience of sinkhole monitoring and early warning with GB-InSAR is described. The latter is a highly precise instrument that is able to produce displacement maps with metric spatial resolution. The described activities were carried out on Elba Island (central Italy), where karstified limestone set off the occurrence of nine sinkholes since 2008, all within less than 3000m2, causing major damage to an important road and many indirect losses. In 1year of monitoring two deforming areas were detected, and the point where a sinkhole was about to propagate to the street level was predicted, thus permitting the preventive closure of the road. The deformation area was larger than the hole generated by the sinkhole, thus showing a subsidence that continued for a prolonged time even after the cavity was filled up. The occurrence of a 1.5-m-wide sinkhole, undetected by the GB-InSAR, also showed the lower detection limit of the instrument
