Testing Higgs models via the vertex by a recoil method at the International Linear Collider
In general, charged Higgs bosons appear in non-minimal Higgs models.
The vertex is known to be related to the violation of the
global symmetry (custodial symmetry) in the Higgs sector. Its magnitude
strongly depends on the structure of the exotic Higgs models which contain
higher isospin representations such as triplet Higgs bosons. We study
the possibility of measuring the vertex via single charged
Higgs boson production associated with the boson at the International
Linear Collider (ILC) by using the recoil method. The feasibility of the signal
is analyzed assuming the polarized
electron and positron beams and the expected detector performance for the
resolution of the two-jet system at the ILC. The background events can be
reduced to a considerable extent by imposing the kinematic cuts even if we take
into account the initial state radiation. For a relatively light charged Higgs
boson whose mass is in the region of 120-130 GeV , the vertex would be precisely testable especially
when the decay of is lepton specific. The exoticness of the extended
Higgs sector can be explored by using combined information for this vertex and
the rho parameter.Comment: 22 pages, 23 figure
Michelson Interferometry with the Keck I Telescope
We report the first use of Michelson interferometry on the Keck I telescope
for diffraction-limited imaging in the near infrared JHK and L bands. By using
an aperture mask located close to the f/25 secondary, the 10 m Keck primary
mirror was transformed into a separate-element, multiple aperture
interferometer. This has allowed diffraction-limited imaging of a large number
of bright astrophysical targets, including the geometrically complex dust
envelopes around a number of evolved stars. The successful restoration of these
images, with dynamic ranges in excess of 200:1, highlights the significant
capabilities of sparse aperture imaging as compared with more conventional
filled-pupil speckle imaging for the class of bright targets considered here.
In particular the enhancement of the signal-to-noise ratio of the Fourier data,
precipitated by the reduction in atmospheric noise, allows high fidelity
imaging of complex sources with small numbers of short-exposure images relative
to speckle. Multi-epoch measurements confirm the reliability of this imaging
technique and our whole dataset provides a powerful demonstration of the
capabilities of aperture masking methods when utilized with the current
generation of large-aperture telescopes. The relationship between these new
results and recent advances in interferometry and adaptive optics is briefly
discussed.Comment: Accepted into Publications of the Astronomical Society of the

Measurement of the Luminosity in the ZEUS Experiment at HERA II
The luminosity in the ZEUS detector was measured using photons from electron
bremsstrahlung. In 2001 the HERA collider was upgraded for operation at higher
luminosity. At the same time the luminosity-measuring system of the ZEUS
experiment was modified to tackle the expected higher photon rate and
synchrotron radiation. The existing lead-scintillator calorimeter was equipped
with radiation hard scintillator tiles and shielded against synchrotron
radiation. In addition, a magnetic spectrometer was installed to measure the
luminosity independently using photons converted in the beam-pipe exit window.
The redundancy provided a reliable and robust luminosity determination with a
systematic uncertainty of 1.7%. The experimental setup, the techniques used for
luminosity determination and the estimate of the systematic uncertainty are
reported.Comment: 25 pages, 11 figure
Proposal for a CFT interpretation of Watts' differential equation for percolation
G. M. T. Watts derived that in two dimensional critical percolation the
crossing probability Pi_hv satisfies a fifth order differential equation which
includes another one of third order whose independent solutions describe the
physically relevant quantities 1, Pi_h, Pi_hv.
We will show that this differential equation can be derived from a level
three null vector condition of a rational c=-24 CFT and motivate how this
solution may be fitted into known properties of percolation.Comment: LaTeX, 20p, added references, corrected typos and additional content
Human cryptochrome exhibits light-dependent magnetosensitivity
Humans are not believed to have a magnetic sense, even though many animals use the Earth's magnetic field for orientation and navigation. One model of magnetosensing in animals proposes that geomagnetic fields are perceived by light-sensitive chemical reactions involving the flavoprotein cryptochrome (CRY). Here we show using a transgenic approach that human CRY2, which is heavily expressed in the retina, can function as a magnetosensor in the magnetoreception system of Drosophila and that it does so in a light-dependent manner. The results show that human CRY2 has the molecular capability to function as a light-sensitive magnetosensor and reopen an area of sensory biology that is ready for further exploration in humans
Pliocene Te Aute limestones, New Zealand: Expanding concepts for cool-water shelf carbonates
Acceptance of a spectrum of warm- through cold-water shallow-marine carbonate facies has become of fundamental importance for correctly interpreting the origin and significance of all ancient platform limestones. Among other attributes, properties that have become a hallmark for characterising many Cenozoic non-tropical occurrences include: (1) the presence of common bryozoan and epifaunal bivalve skeletons; (2) a calcite-dominated mineralogy; (3) relatively thin deposits exhibiting low rates of sediment accumulation; (4) an overall destructive early diagenetic regime; and (5) that major porosity destruction and lithification occur mainly in response to chemical compaction of calcitic skeletons during moderate to deep burial. The Pliocene Te Aute limestones are non-tropical skeletal carbonates formed at paleolatitudes near 40-42°S under the influence of commonly strong tidal flows along the margins of an actively deforming and differentially uplifting forearc basin seaway, immediately inboard of the convergent Pacific-Australian plate boundary off eastern North Island, New Zealand. This dynamic depositional and tectonic setting strongly influenced both the style and subsequent diagenetic evolution of the limestones. Some of the Te Aute limestones exhibit the above kinds of "normal" non-tropical characteristics, but others do not. For example, many are barnacle and/or bivalve dominated, and several include attributes that at least superficially resemble properties of certain tropical carbonates. In this regard, a number of the limestones are infaunal bivalve rich and dominated by an aragonite over a calcite primary mineralogy, with consequently relatively high diagenetic potential. Individual limestone units are also often rather thick (e.g., up to 50-300 m), with accumulation rates from 0.2 to 0.5 m/ka, and locally as high as 1 m/ka. Moreover, there can be a remarkable array of diagenetic features in the limestones, involving grain alteration and/or cementation to widely varying extents within any, or some combination of, the marine phreatic, burial, and meteoric diagenetic environments, including locally widespread development of meteoric cement sourced from aragonite dissolution. The message is that non-tropical shelf carbonates include a more diverse array of geological settings, of skeletal and mineralogical facies, and of diagenetic features than current sedimentary models mainly advocate. While several attributes positively distinguish tropical from non-tropical limestones, continued detailed documentation of the wide spectrum of shallow-marine carbonate deposits formed outside tropical regions remains an important challenge in carbonate sedimentology
GJ 900: A new hierarchical system with low-mass components
Speckle interferometric observations made with the 6 m telescope of the
Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2000
revealed the triple nature of the nearby ( mas)
low-mass young ( Myr) star GJ 900. The configuration of the triple
system allowed it to be dynamically unstable. Differential photometry performed
from 2000 through 2004 yielded - and -band absolute magnitudes and
spectral types for the components to be =6.660.08,
=9.150.11, =10.080.26, =4.840.08,
=6.760.20, =7.390.31, K5--K7,
M3--M4, M5--M6. The ``mass--luminosity''
relation is used to estimate the individual masses of the components:
,
,
. From the observations of the
components relative motion in the period 2000--2006, we conclude that GJ 900 is
a hierarchical triple star with the possible orbital periods
P80 yrs and P20 yrs. An analysis of the 2MASS
images of the region around GJ 900 leads us to suggest that the system can
include other very-low-mass components.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in NaVO: a microscopic study
We present a unified account of magnetic exchange and Raman scattering in the
quasi-one-dimensional transition-metal oxide NaVO. Based on a
cluster-model approach explicit expressions for the exchange integral and the
Raman-operator are given. It is demonstrated that a combination of the
electronic-structure and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, allowed by
symmetry in this material, are responsible for the finite Raman cross-section
giving rise to both, one- and two-magnon scattering amplitudes.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Nearby low-mass triple system GJ795
We report the results of our optical speckle-interferometric observations of
the nearby triple system GJ795 performed with the 6-m BTA telescope with
diffraction-limited angular resolution. The three components of the system were
optically resolved for the first time. Position measurements allowed us to
determine the elements of the inner orbit of the triple system. We use the
measured magnitude differences to estimate the absolute magnitudes and spectral
types of the components of the triple: =7.310.08,
=8.660.10, =8.420.10, K5,
K9, K8. The total mass of the system is
equal to =1.69. We show
GJ795 to be a hierarchical triple system which satisfies the empirical
stability criteria.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, published in Astrophysical Bulleti
