    ZnO Nanorods Grown on p-GaN Using Hydrothermal Synthesis and Its Optoelectronic Devices Application

    The ZnO nanorods with the length of 1-1.5 μm were deposited on p-GaN by hydrothermal synthesis at low temperature 100°C. The structural and optical properties of the as-grown ZnO rods were investigated by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. After annealing treatment the as-grown films in air at 600°C, 30min, and the ZnO rods showed good crystallinity and optical properties with strong UV emission at 378 nm. In addition, a sharp UV emission peak at 369.45 nm with the FWHM 20 meV, which attributed to the bound exciton recombination, was also observed from the ZnO rods at 80K. Next, the e-beam evaporation method was used to deposit metal contact on n-ZnO and p-GaN. Here, we use Au and Ni/Au as metal contacts for n-ZnO and p-GaN, respectively. The current-voltage characteristics of the fabricated n-ZnO/p-GaN heterojunction revealed rectifying behavior with a leakage current of 10⁻⁸ A at -10V, a forward current 4x10⁻⁶ A at 10V bias. The heterojunction also showed a good photoresponse, with the change of the current – voltage characteristics under ultraviolet illumination. Under UV illumination, the forward turn on voltage changed to 7.5V.     Mapping/assessing carbon stocks in the perspective of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) for rural communities in East Cameroon

    Rural Africa plays an important role in the stabilization of the world's climate. Given that greenhouse gases are emitted from different sources and places, they accumulate over time and mix globally. Climate change can then be effectively tackled if collective actions are taken at global level. Though most decisions are taken by international conservation organizations, the implimetations are done at rural levels by local and indegenous communities who direclty depend on forest products. Reason why carbon stocks assessment at the MPEMOG Community Forest was done in order to establish a reference level for emission-reduction in the perspective of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) using the Chave et al. (2014) non-destructive allometric equation. From analysis of variance, carbon stock varied from 53.48±36.17 Ct/ha to 218.29±308.38 Ct/ha in Mixed cropland and Primary forest respectively equally the conversion of Primary Forest to Mixed cropland leads to the highest carbon loss (166.24 Ct/ha) and Cocoa plantations generate both economic and ecological values and contribute significantly to food security. The study concludes that the variation in carbon stocks depends on the degree of human influence and PES is an opportunity to contribute in forest sustainability while improving on the socioeconomic development of forest dependent populations

    Uniformly distributed ZnO nanorods with diameter 70-100 nm and 1-2μm long have been successfully grown at low temperatures on GaN by using the inexpensive aqueous solution method. The formation of the ZnO nanorods and the growth parameters are controlled by reactant concentration, temperature and pH. No catalyst is required. The XRD studies show that the ZnO nanorods are single crystals and that they grow along the c axis of the crystal plane. The room temperature photoluminescence measurements have shown ultraviolet peaks at 388nm with high intensity, which are comparable to those found in high quality ZnO films. The mechanism of the nanorod growth in the aqueous solution is proposed. The dependence of the ZnO nanorods on the growth parameters was also investigated. While changing the growth temperature from 60°C to 150°C, the morphology of the ZnO nanorods changed from sharp tip (needle shape) to flat tip (rod shape).     Congenital bipartite lunate presenting as a misdiagnosed lunate fracture: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>A rare case of congenital bipartite lunate in a child is reported. Carpal variants are very uncommon as independent entities, with only three previous reports of this condition in the English literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>An 11-year-old Caucasian boy presented with pain in the left wrist after a fall. Radiographs in the emergency department demonstrated a lunate that was divided into palmar and dorsal parts, causing a misdiagnosis of fractured lunate. Magnetic resonance imaging was then used to differentiate between the two diagnoses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Very few cases of bipartite lunate have been reported in the literature, and unless awareness is raised about congenital anomalies such as this variant, confusion may arise.</p

    The Relationship between Regular Sports Participation and Vigilance in Male and Female Adolescents

    The present study investigated the relationship between regular sport participation (soccer) and vigilance performance. Two groups of male and female adolescents differentiated in terms of their sport participation (athletes, n = 39, and non-athletes, n = 36) took part in the study. In one session, participants performed the Leger Multi-stage fitness test to estimate their aerobic fitness level. In the other session, participants completed the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) to evaluate their vigilance performance. Perceived arousal prior to the task and motivation toward the task were also measured in the PVT session. The results revealed that athletes had better cardiovascular fitness and showed better performance in the PVT. However, correlation analyses did not show any significant relationship between cardiovascular fitness and performance in the PVT. Athletes showed larger scores in motivation and perceived arousal measures with respect to non-athletes, although, once again, these variables were not correlated with PVT performance. Gender differences were observed only in the Leger test, with males showing greater fitness level than females. The major outcome of this research points to a positive relationship between regular sport participation and vigilance during adolescence. This relationship did not seem to be influenced by gender, perceived arousal, motivation toward the task or cardiovascular fitness.
