Determination of the presence, species composition, and relative abundance of anadromous fishes in Pohick Creek, Fairfax, Virginia

The overall concern of the study was to determine if fish laddero are needed to permit upstream migration of spawning anadromous fishes beyond the sites of impoundment. Specific questions addressed were: 1. Do anadromous species presently utilize Pohick Creek? 2. If so, what species are present? 3. How far do the species migrate upstream? 4. What is the relative abundance of the species? 5. Wl1at effects will impoundments, with ~nd without fish ladders, have on the anadromous fish resource

Assessment Of Surf Clam Stocks In Nearshore Waters Along The Delmarva Peninsula And In The Fishery South Of Cape Henry

In 1974 the abundance of surf clams was sampled from Delmarva Peninsula, Delaware south to North Carolina. Surf clams were not found in commercial densities in the inshore waters along the Delmarva Peninsula. Off shore and south of Cape Henry, an area of intense surf clam fishing, the estimated standing crop was IO million bushels. A length-age relationship was estimated and it implies that recruitment to the fishery occurs at approximately age 2, at an average annual rate of about 8%. It is concluded that because of the low recruitment rate relative to the heavy fishing pressure that Virginia surf clam stocks have been overharvested in recent years

Inventory of surf clams in nearshore waters from Cape Henlopen to the False Cape area : quarterly progress report, March 16, 1975 - June 15, 1975

The main objectives of the study were to estimate distribution, relative abundance and recruitment of surf clams along the Delmarva Peninsula and in areas of intense harvesting off the Virginia co~st. The project was a joint u~dertaking by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Herein-after it is associated with the latter Institution to avoid confusion with an NMFS surf clam cruise in Virginia and North Carolina coastal waters in August, 1974

A survey of the surf clam@pisula solidissima) in the nearshore area along the Delmarva Peninsula and further offshore from Cape Henry to upper North Carolina was conducted from 4 October, 1974 through 15 October, 1974. The project is a joint undertaking by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMF\u27S) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). A total of 138 sites were sampled with a hydraulic tow dredge and, in addition, a benthic sample for juvenile clams were obtained at each site with a Smith-MacIntyre sampler

Multivariate analysis of meristic characters of juvenile Alosa : Completion report 1985

The objective was to determine if meristic studies supported a premise of river-specific stocks of American shad (Alosa sapidissima), alewife (A. pseudoharenqus) and blueback herring (A. aestivalis) in Chesapeake Bay. Information gathered from this study will add to the general body of data gathered for the implementation of management plans for each species

This presentation is the annual report for P. L. 89-304, AFC 20 project Study of Alosa stock composition and year-class strength in Virginia, for the period 1 February 1987 to 31 July 1988. The fishes of concern were the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), American shad(A. sapidissima), and the blueback herring(A. aestivalis)

A Mark-recapture study of striped bass in the Rappahannock River, Virginia Annual Report 1988-1989

A total of 3,892 striped bass were tagged and released in the Fall 1988 and 1,316 fish in the Spring 1989 on the Rappahannock River. In the Fall, 77.6% of the tagged striped bass were less than 400 mm FL. In contrast, 81.5% of the fish were 400 mm FL or greater in the Spring. The available striped bass stock in the Fall is more vulnerable to fishing than is the available stock in the Spring. Recaptures per net day of tagged striped bass in pound nets in the Fall 1987 were seven times greater than in the Spring 1988, and 113 times greater in the Fall 1988 than in the Spring 1989. The latter value, however, is inflated to some degree because of recurring high river flows in the Spring 1989. With the occurrence of frequent freshets, the fish moved downstream below the location of the nets, thereby periodically reducing their availability
