[Animal breeding as a tool for upgrowth and development of meat sheep sector]. Abstract: Among the actions to promote the growing and the development of an animal breeding activity, the genetic improvement is one of that more attention deserve. Selection and multiplication of genotypes appropriated to several ecossystems found in the country are necessary to the development of meat sheep sector in Brazil. To optimize the production ability of the animals, the basic tools of animal breeding are the selection and the mating methods. In this paper fundamental definitions of animal breeding are presented and forms of its contribution for the upgrowth of meat sheep sector are discussed.

Evaluation of commercial cuts of lambs finished in irrigated pasture in the semiarid northeastern Brazil. Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare four genetic groups of hair sheep on the weight and yield of commercial cuts of carcass. Thirty-three male lambs, contemporary and unrelated were used in the experiment, being thirteen of Santa Inês (SI) breed, seven of Brazilian Somali breed (SB), six of Morada Nova (MN) breed and seven ½ Dorper x ½ Morada Nova (F1) crossbred. All lambs were of simple birth. The genetic groups Santa Inês, Somalis Brasileira and ½ Dorper - ½ Morada Nova had similar averages for leg, , loin, rib, foreshank and neck cuts (p>0,05). Best leg yields were observed in Brazilian Somali and Santa Ines groups, and better loin yields were observed in Brazilian Somalis and Morada Nova breeds. The similarity of groups Santa Inês, Somalis Brasileira and ½ Dorper - ½ Morada Nova in the weights of the cuts was not maintained in the yields. This indicates differences between groups in the deposition of meat in specific cuts

Evolving wormhole geometries within nonlinear electrodynamics

In this work, we explore the possibility of evolving (2+1) and (3+1)-dimensional wormhole spacetimes, conformally related to the respective static geometries, within the context of nonlinear electrodynamics. For the (3+1)-dimensional spacetime, it is found that the Einstein field equation imposes a contracting wormhole solution and the obedience of the weak energy condition. Nevertheless, in the presence of an electric field, the latter presents a singularity at the throat, however, for a pure magnetic field the solution is regular. For the (2+1)-dimensional case, it is also found that the physical fields are singular at the throat. Thus, taking into account the principle of finiteness, which states that a satisfactory theory should avoid physical quantities becoming infinite, one may rule out evolving (3+1)-dimensional wormhole solutions, in the presence of an electric field, and the (2+1)-dimensional case coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure; to appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity. External Bremsstrahlung Studies on Films of Lead Monoxide Filled Polycarbonate Composite

The development of high-Z (high atomic number) radiation shielding materials is vital in order to protect personnel who work with harmful gamma radiation sources. At the same time, the emission of external bremsstrahlung (EB) radiation in those shielding materials when the radiation source emits beta particles as well as gamma radiation is also of prime concern. The production of EB in films of lead monoxide (PbO) loaded polycarbonate (PC) composite at eleven different filler levels (FLs) varying, in terms of weight fraction, from 0.0 % up to 10.0 % were investigated experimentally by using beta particles from strontium-90/yttrium-90 (90Sr/90Y) radioactive source. A nonlinear relation is observed between EB intensity and target thickness. The effective atomic numbers of the prepared PbO-filled PC composite films (at different FLs) were determined via EB measurements, followed by calculations, and the values obtained were compared with the modified atomic numbers which were determined for the same composite films (at different FLs) using the Markowicz and Van Grieken equation, and it was found that they are in good agreement. Finally, the atomic number dependence of EB in these composite films (PbO-filled PC composites) has been studied. It is obtained that the intensity of EB spectra depends on the square of the atomic number of the target material

An explicit Schr\"odinger picture for Aharonov's Modular Variable concept

We propose to address in a natural manner, the modular variable concept explicitly in a Schr\"odinger picture. The idea of Modular Variables was introduced in 1969 by Aharonov, Pendleton and Petersen to explain certain non-local properties of quantum mechanics. Our approach to this subject is based on Schwinger's finite quantum kinematics and it's continuous limit.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure
