A systems approach to the engineering workforce
The engineering function, work force and associations should be viewed as a system, for an adequate understanding of the complex interactions involved, for development of coherent policies and for achieving optimal overall performance. Such an approach embraces professional, para-professional and other categories, and requires a coherent system of qualifications, education, occupational identifiers and role definitions. For engineering education, it facilitates effective design of educational programs for each category and educational articulation between them. For industry and society, it fosters work force effectiveness and harmony. The paper provides the basis for systematising the complex of elements that make up the engineering system.<br /
Evaluation of Increased Vitamin D Fortification in High-Temperature, Short-TimeâProcessed 2% Milk, UHT-Processed 2% Fat Chocolate Milk, and Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of increased vitamin D fortification (250 IU/serving) of high-temperature, short-time (HTST)âprocessed 2% fat milk, UHT-processed 2% fat chocolate milk, and low-fat strawberry yogurt on the sensory characteristics and stability of vitamin D during processing and storage. Three replicates of HTST pasteurized 2% fat milk, UHT pasteurized 2% fat chocolate milk, and low-fat strawberry yogurt were manufactured. Each of the 3 replicates for all products contained a control (no vitamin D fortification), a treatment group with 100 IU vitamin D/serving (current level of vitamin D fortification), and a treatment group with 250 IU vitamin D/serving. A cold-water dispersible vitamin D3 concentrate was used for all fortifications. The HTST-processed 2% fat milk was stored for 21 d, with vitamin D analysis done before processing and on d 0, 14, and 21. Sensory analysis was conducted on d 14. The UHT-processed 2% fat chocolate milk was stored for 60 d, with vitamin D analysis done before processing and on d 0, 40, and 60. Sensory analysis was conducted on d 40. Low-fat strawberry yogurt was stored for 42 d, with vitamin D analysis done before processing, and on d 0, 28, and 42. Sensory analysis was conducted on d 28. Vitamin D levels in the fortified products were found to be similar to the target levels of fortification (100 and 250 IU vitamin D per serving) for all products, indicating no loss of vitamin D during processing. Vitamin D was also found to be stable over the shelf life of each product. Increasing the fortification of vitamin D from 100 to 250 IU/serving did not result in a change in the sensory characteristics of HTST-processed 2% fat milk, UHT-processed 2% fat chocolate milk, or low-fat strawberry yogurt. These results indicate that it is feasible to increase vitamin D fortification from 100 to 250 IU per serving in these products
Towards Intelligent Databases
This article is a presentation of the objectives and techniques
of deductive databases. The deductive approach to databases aims at extending
with intensional definitions other database paradigms that describe
applications extensionaUy. We first show how constructive specifications can
be expressed with deduction rules, and how normative conditions can be defined
using integrity constraints. We outline the principles of bottom-up and
top-down query answering procedures and present the techniques used for
integrity checking. We then argue that it is often desirable to manage with
a database system not only database applications, but also specifications of
system components. We present such meta-level specifications and discuss
their advantages over conventional approaches
Charge trapping in polymer transistors probed by terahertz spectroscopy and scanning probe potentiometry
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and scanning probe potentiometry were used
to investigate charge trapping in polymer field-effect transistors fabricated
on a silicon gate. The hole density in the transistor channel was determined
from the reduction in the transmitted terahertz radiation under an applied gate
voltage. Prolonged device operation creates an exponential decay in the
differential terahertz transmission, compatible with an increase in the density
of trapped holes in the polymer channel. Taken in combination with scanning
probe potentionmetry measurements, these results indicate that device
degradation is largely a consequence of hole trapping, rather than of changes
to the mobility of free holes in the polymer.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Analytic Solution for the Ground State Energy of the Extensive Many-Body Problem
A closed form expression for the ground state energy density of the general
extensive many-body problem is given in terms of the Lanczos tri-diagonal form
of the Hamiltonian. Given the general expressions of the diagonal and
off-diagonal elements of the Hamiltonian Lanczos matrix, and
, asymptotic forms and can be defined in
terms of a new parameter ( is the Lanczos iteration and is
the size of the system). By application of theorems on the zeros of orthogonal
polynomials we find the ground-state energy density in the bulk limit to be

Dynamical Generation of Noiseless Quantum Subsystems
We present control schemes for open quantum systems that combine decoupling
and universal control methods with coding procedures. By exploiting a general
algebraic approach, we show how appropriate encodings of quantum states result
in obtaining universal control over dynamically-generated noise-protected
subsystems with limited control resources. In particular, we provide an
efficient scheme for performing universal encoded quantum computation in a wide
class of systems subjected to linear non-Markovian quantum noise and supporting

Ground-layer wavefront reconstruction from multiple natural guide stars
Observational tests of ground layer wavefront recovery have been made in open
loop using a constellation of four natural guide stars at the 1.55 m Kuiper
telescope in Arizona. Such tests explore the effectiveness of wide-field seeing
improvement by correction of low-lying atmospheric turbulence with ground-layer
adaptive optics (GLAO). The wavefronts from the four stars were measured
simultaneously on a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (WFS). The WFS placed a 5 x
5 array of square subapertures across the pupil of the telescope, allowing for
wavefront reconstruction up to the fifth radial Zernike order. We find that the
wavefront aberration in each star can be roughly halved by subtracting the
average of the wavefronts from the other three stars. Wavefront correction on
this basis leads to a reduction in width of the seeing-limited stellar image by
up to a factor of 3, with image sharpening effective from the visible to near
infrared wavelengths over a field of at least 2 arc minutes. We conclude that
GLAO correction will be a valuable tool that can increase resolution and
spectrographic throughput across a broad range of seeing-limited observations.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, to be published in Astrophys.
