    Thermal Conductivity of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes: Diameter and Annealing Dependence

    The thermal conductivity, k(T), of bulk single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT's) displays a linear temperature dependence at low T that has been attributed to 1D quantization of phonons. To explore this issue further, we have measured the k(T) of samples with varying average tube diameters. We observe linear k(T) up to higher temperatures in samples with smaller diameters, in agreement with a quantization picture. In addition, we have examined the effect of annealing on k(T). We observe an enhancement in k(T) for annealed samples which we attribute to healing of defects and removal of impurities. These measurements demonstrate how the thermal properties of an SWNT material can be controlled by manipulating its intrinsic nanoscale properties.Comment: Proc. of the XV. Int.     Ethics on the corporate websites of the main advertising agencies in Spain

    Although a significant number of studies have been carried out in relation to the ethical criteria of advertising messages in Spain, little or no research has been done on the corporate ethics of advertising agencies. Based on a content analysis methodology, the research presented here provides a twofold account of the ethical dimension of agency self-advertising on the Internet by reading (1) corporate ethics statements and (2) corporate identity statements. The results of such reading disclose that only a minimal percentage of companies is bound by particular ethical commitments and only one advertising agency makes explicit reference to ethical concerns in its corporate identity statemen

    Carbon nanotube composites for thermal management

    Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were used to augment the thermal transport properties of industrial epoxy. Samples loaded with 1 wt% unpurified SWNT material show a 70% increase in thermal conductivity at 40K, rising to 125% at room temperature; the enhancement due to 1 wt% loading of vapor grown carbon fibers is three times smaller. Electrical conductivity data show a percolation threshold between 0.1 and 0.2 wt% SWNT loading. The Vickers hardness rises monotonically with SWNT loading up to a factor of 3.5 at 2 wt%. These results suggest that the thermal and mechanical properties of SWNT-epoxy composites are improved, without the need to chemically functionalize the nanotubes

    Measuring Temperature Gradients over Nanometer Length Scales

    When a quantum dot is subjected to a thermal gradient, the temperature of electrons entering the dot can be determined from the dot's thermocurrent if the conductance spectrum and background temperature are known. We demonstrate this technique by measuring the temperature difference across a 15 nm quantum dot embedded in a nanowire. This technique can be used when the dot's energy states are separated by many kT and will enable future quantitative investigations of electron-phonon interaction, nonlinear thermoelectric effects, and the effciency of thermoelectric energy conversion in quantum dots.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    On the bioactivity of Echinacea purpurea extracts to modulate the production of inflammatory mediators

    Inflammatory diseases are the focus of several clinical studies, due to limitations and serious side effects of available therapies. Plant-based drugs (e.g., salicylic acid, morphine) have become landmarks in the pharmaceutical field. Therefore, we investigated the immunomodulatory effects of flowers, leaves, and roots from Echinacea purpurea. Ethanolic (EE) and dichloromethanolic extracts (DE) were obtained using the Accelerated Solvent Extractor and aqueous extracts (AE) were prepared under stirring. Their chemical fingerprint was evaluated by liquid chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). The pro- and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the reduction in intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), of the different extracts were evaluated using non-stimulated and lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages. Interestingly, AE were able to stimulate macrophages to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor -TNF-α, interleukin -IL-1β, and IL-6), and to generate ROS/RNS. Conversely, under an inflammatory scenario, all extracts reduced the amount of pro-inflammatory mediators. DE, alkylamides-enriched extracts, showed the strongest anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, E. purpurea extracts demonstrated generally a more robust anti-inflammatory activity than clinically used anti-inflammatory drugs (dexamethasone, diclofenac, salicylic acid, and celecoxib).     Magnetically aligned single wall carbon nanotube films: preferred orientation and anisotropic transport properties

    Thick films of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) exhibiting in-plane preferred orientation have been produced by filter deposition from suspension in strong magnetic fields. We characterize the field-induced alignment with x-ray fiber diagrams and polarized Raman scattering, using a model which includes a completely unaligned fraction. We correlate the texture parameters with resistivity and thermal conductivity measured parallel and perpendicular to the alignment direction. Results obtained with 7 and 26 Tesla fields are compared. We find no significant field dependence of the distribution width, while the aligned fraction is slightly greater at the higher field. Anisotropy in both transport properties is modest, with ratios in the range 5–9, consistent with the measured texture parameters assuming a simple model of rigid rod conductors. We suggest that further enhancements in anisotropic properties will require optimizing the filter deposition process rather than larger magnetic fields. We show that both x-ray and Raman data are required for a complete texture analysis of oriented SWNT materials

    La regulación del ejercicio profesional de la publicidad en España entre 1988 y 2013

    Según la sociología de las profesiones, toda actividad profesional debe tener un campo de actuación acotado y regulado en el que ejercer su competencia. De esta manera, se puede regular tanto el resultado de la actividad profesional como el ejercicio de la misma. En este contexto, este trabajo se propone compilar, describir y valorar el marco normativo que afecta a la actividad publicitaria en España. Para ello analizamos, por un lado, la legislación; y, por otro, las normas de autorregulación a partir de una búsqueda sistemática en la base de datos de Autocontrol, que complementamos con otra en el BOE, en un periodo comprendido entre 1988, año de promulgación de la Ley General de Publicidad, y 2013. Los resultados muestran que la legislación publicitaria ha ido en aumento desde 1988, especialmente en el terreno autonómico. La mayoría de los textos jurídicos afectan al contenido de los mensajes publicitarios, siendo prácticamente nulo el interés de los legisladores por regular la profesión de la Publicidad y las Relaciones Públicas. Por otra parte, el respaldo legal al autocontrol publicitario en 2003 y las políticas de la Unión Europea parecen alentar la elaboración de códigos de autorregulación. Los sectores más proclives a disponer de estos instrumentos operan en entornos en los que la autorregulación es preceptiva, bien porque se dirigen a colectivos vulnerables, o bien porque su actividad pueden atentar contra la salud o contra el medio ambient

    Echinacea purpurea fractions represent promising plant-based anti-inflammatory formulations

    Echinacea purpurea is traditionally used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Therefore, we investigated the anti-inflammatory capacity of E. purpurea dichloromethanolic (DE) and ethanolic extracts obtained from flowers and roots (R). To identify the class of compounds responsible for the strongest bioactivity, the extracts were fractionated into phenol/carboxylic acid (F1) and alkylamide fraction (F2). The chemical fingerprint of bioactive compounds in the fractions was evaluated by LC-HRMS. E. purpurea extracts and fractions significantly reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 6 and/or tumor necrosis factor) and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) production by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated primary human monocyte-derived macrophages. Dichloromethanolic extract obtained from roots (DE-R) demonstrated the strongest anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, fractions exhibited greater anti-inflammatory activity than whole extract. Indeed, alkylamides must be the main compounds responsible for the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts; thus, the fractions presenting high content of these compounds presented greater bioactivity. It was demonstrated that alkylamides exert their anti-inflammatory activity through the downregulation of the phosphorylation of p38, ERK 1/2, STAT 3, and/or NF-κB signaling pathways, and/or downregulation of cyclooxygenase 2 expression. E. purpurea extracts and fractions, mainly DE-R-F2, are promising and powerful plant-based anti-inflammatory formulations that can be further used as a basis for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.This work was financially supported by the FCT to the Ph.D. grants of S.F.V.     Thermoelectric Power of p-Doped Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes and the Role of Phonon Drag

    We measured thermoelectric power S of bulk single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) materials p-doped with acids. In contrast to oxygen-exposed or degassed samples, S is very small at the lowest temperatures, increases super-linearly above a characteristic and sample-dependent T, and then levels off. We attribute this unusual behavior to 1-D phonon drag, in which the depression of the Fermi energy cuts off electron-phonon scattering at temperatures below a characteristic T0. This idea is supported by a model calculation in which the low temperature behavior of phonon drag is specifically related to the one-dimensional character of the electronic spectrum

    Response to Neutrons and γ-rays of Two Liquid Scintillators

    UltimaGoldTM AB and OptiphaseTrisafe are two liquid scintillators made by Perkin Elmer and EG & G Company respectively. Both are commercially promoted as scintillation detectors for α and β particles. In this work, the responses to γ-rays and neutrons of UltimaGoldTM AB and OptiphaseTriSafe liquid scintillators, without and with reflector, have been measured aiming to use these scintillators as γ-rays and neutron detectors. Responses to γ-rays and neutrons were measured as pulse shape spectra in a multichannel analyzer. Scintillators were exposed to gamma rays produced by 137Cs, 54Mn, 22Na and 60Co sources. The response to neutrons was obtained with a 241AmBe neutron source that was measured to 25 and 50 cm from the scintillators. The pulse height spectra due to gamma rays are shifted to larger channels as the photon energy increases and these responses are different from the response due to neutrons. Thus, UltimaGoldTM AB and OptiphaseTrisafe can be used to detect γ-rays and neutrons
