A comparison of the analytical and experimental performance of the solid version of a cooled radial turbine

    Get PDF
An evaluation of the aerodynamic performance of the solid version of an Allison-designed cooled radial turbine was conducted at NASA Lewis' Warm Turbine Test Facility. The resulting pressure and temperature measurements are used to calculate vane, rotor, and overall stage performance. These performance results are then compared to the analytical results obtained by using NASA's MTSB (MERIDL-TSONIC-BLAYER) code

Purpose While epilepsy surgery has been shown to reduce seizure frequency and severity and even cures seizures in children with drug-resistant epilepsy, data from middle-income countries (MIC) are lacking. Method This study is a retrospective review of children with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent surgical treatment at Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital (RCWMCH) between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2021 (HREC: 140/2020). Results During the 21-year study period, 60 patients underwent epilepsy surgery for drugresistant epilepsy. The median age of the children was seven years (IQR 4.81-10.27years) at the time of surgery, with a male predominance of 33 patients. The most common surgical procedure performed was an anterior temporal lobectomy for temporal lobe epilepsy in 19 cases (31.7%), followed by peri-insular hemispherotomy in 9 cases (15.0%) and frontal lobectomy in 8 cases (13.3%). Of the 60 patients, complete records were available for 55 patients noting complications in 11 (20.0%), of which 4 cases (7.3%) had major complications. Notably, 2 patients (3.6%) had new-onset psychiatric symptoms. The long term outcomes after surgery showed 1-year seizure freedom in 32 patients (58.2%); among these, 21 patients (38.2%) could stop ASM one year after surgery, 17 patients (30.9%) had a recurrence of their seizures, and three had to restart ASM after 2-3 years. Eight patients (14.5%) required repeat surgery. The one-year-Modified Engel scoring for the study population was: 1-A in 52.7%, I-B in 3.6%, I-C in 1.8%, II-A in 15.8%, III-A in 10.9%, IV-A in 3.6% and IV-B in 10.9%. The most common histological finding in anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) was focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), found in 11 patients (57.9%). The periinsular hemispherotomy (PIH) cases had equal numbers of FCD and Rasmussen's encephalitis in 4 patients (44.4%). The number of FCD in this series is much higher than in international data. Conclusion Epilepsy surgery is an effective and attainable intervention for drug-resistant epilepsy in the paediatric population despite limited resources and challenging aetiological profiles. Low complication rates were comparable to international data, with good seizure freedom outcomes

    Substance Use Education for Youth

    Get PDF
The City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department offers community members a variety of different activities aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle. One of the locations within the department is the Gene Hoularis and Waldo Rodriguez Youth Center, primarily focusing on youth. Due to a lack of information, it is essential for youth to become well informed about the impact drugs can have on their future. For this project, we raised awareness about substance use through a total of three workshops. The purpose of this project was to allow youth to build on their knowledge regarding substances and guide them towards good decision-making. Based on project results, youth have expressed that the information covered helped them become well informed and would allow them to stay away from substances. Future steps may include an increase in promoting the workshops, which would help attract a higher number of attendees

Experimental Evaluation of a Cooled Radial-inflow Turbine

Two 14.4 inch tip diameter rotors were installed and tested in the Small Engines Component Turbine Facility (SECTF) at NASA Lewis Research Center. The rotors, a solid and a cooled version of a radial-inflow turbine, were tested with a 15 vane stat or over a set of rotational speeds ranging from 80 to 120 percent design speed (17,500 to 21,500 rpm). The total-to-total stage pressure ratios ranged from 2.5 to 5.5. The data obtained at the equivalent conditions using the solid version of the rotor are presented with the cooled rotor data. A Reynolds number of 381,000 was maintained for both rotors, whose stages had a design mass flow of 4.0 Ibm/sec, a design work level of 59.61 Btu/lbm, and a design efficiency of 87 percent. The results include mass flow data, turbine torque, turbine exit flow angles, stage efficiency, and rotor inlet and exit surveys

Description of a Pressure Measurement Technique for Obtaining Surface Static Pressures of a Radial Turbine

    Get PDF
The aerodynamic performance of a solid uncooled version of a cooled radial turbine was evaluated in the Small Engine Components Test Facility Turbine rig at the NASA Lewis Research Center. Specifically, an experiment was conducted to rotor surface static pressures. This was the first time surface static pressures had been measured on a radial turbine at NASA Lewis. These pressures were measured by a modified Rotating Data Package (RDP), a standard product manufactured by Scanivalve, Inc. Described here are the RDP, and the modifications that were made, as well as the checkout, installation, and testing procedures. The data presented are compared to analytical results obtained from NASA's MERIDL TSONIC BLAYER (MTSB) code

Although all people in the United States have fundamental human rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), not everyone can enjoy them equally. Many people, such as employers, blatantly disregard these core human rights and exploit their migrant workers. However, despite migrant workers being disproportionately vulnerable to abuse, it is not uncommon for migrant workers to be reluctant to report employers because of their fear of retaliation and their relatively poor position. These workers often do not speak the language, are in remote and segregated areas and are exploited through their immigration status. Employers are frequently in charge of their housing, transportation, pay, and ability to remain in the United States. As a result, these migrant workers are often at risk of deportation because their employers generally own and control their visa status
