    Triple condensate halo from water droplets impacting on cold surfaces

    Understanding the dynamics in the deposition of water droplets onto solid surfaces is of importance from both fundamental and practical viewpoints. While the deposition of a water droplet onto a heated surface is extensively studied, the characteristics of depositing a droplet onto a cold surface and the phenomena leading to such behavior remain elusive. Here we report the formation of a triple condensate halo observed during the deposition of a water droplet onto a cold surface, due to the interplay between droplet impact dynamics and vapor diffusion. Two subsequent condensation stages occur during the droplet spreading and cooling processes, engendering this unique condensate halo with three distinctive bands. We further proposed a scaling model to interpret the size of each band, and the model is validated by the experiments of droplets with different impact velocity and varying substrate temperature. Our experimental and theoretical investigation of the droplet impact dynamics and the associated condensation unravels the mass and heat transfer among droplet, vapor and substrate, offer a new sight for designing of heat exchange devices

    An efficient optimal design methodology for abnormal noise control of automobile transmission in the neutral idle condition

    The modal analysis of the automobile transmission housing assembly is formulated using 3D graphics software Pro/E together with Finite Element Method in order to reduce the noise and vibration by accurately identifying the noise source of the transmission in the neutral idle condition. Besides, the calculation of meshing frequency of gear pair is conducted. After comparing model analysis results with the calculation results, we can intuitively analysis the dynamic characteristics of the transmission housing assembly and find out sensitive parts of the housing vibration. In order to enhance the structural stiffness of the transmission housing assembly and allow intentionally the natural frequency of the transmission to avoid the gear meshing frequency, we increase the thickness of thin plate or add the strengthening rib on the weak parts of the transmission housing assembly. The results of the above modified modal reanalysis show that low mode frequencies of the transmission housing assembly are greatly improved after optimization, and avoid the gear meshing excitation frequency effectively. The probability of resonance for the transmission housing assembly in use will be greatly reduced, which can well achieve the purpose of enhancing the dynamic characteristics of the transmission housing assembly

    Experimental Study of Cohesive Embankment Dam Breach Formation due to Overtopping

    The recurrent floods in recent decades have imposed a challenge of embankment dam breaching, which needs great attention through improved design methods that are based on risk approach, the evacuation plans for people at risk, etc. In this study, based on the small-scale model tests a series of experiments were conducted to determine the breaching process of cohesive embankment dam using a simplified physical based breach model due to overtopping; the breach process observed during tests in the laboratory and the results from analyzed parameters are described. Five dam models, three of which were constructed with homogenous clay soil while two were sandy-clay mixture tested. The heights of the embankments dam were 0.45 m, and the widths at the crest were 0.20 m. The data from these examinations indicated that headcut erosion played an important role in the process of breach development. Initiation of erosion, flow shear erosion, sidewall bottom erosion, and distinct soil mechanical slope mass failure from the headcut vertically and laterally were all observed during these tests. In this physical based experimental model, the initial scouring position calculated by applying a hydraulic method, the broad crested weir formula used for breaching flow discharge and flow velocity computed based on breach flow discharge. The stability of the side slope failures was estimated by comparing the resisting and deriving force. Further, using data from laboratory experiments, the calculated peak breach discharge, breach characteristics times, breach widths, and breach flow velocity generally agreed well with the measured data and also the knowledge acquired from observed breach process at several stages.     Surgical Resection of Primary Tumors Provides Survival Benefits for Lung Cancer Patients With Unexpected Pleural Dissemination

    Background: Surgery is not generally recommended for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with malignant pleural dissemination (PD). However, in some cases, PD is found unexpectedly during surgery. There is no consensus on whether surgical intervention can provide survival benefit for them. We investigated the role of surgery in NSCLC patients with unexpected PD by a cohort study.Methods: Clinical data of consecutive patients who intended to undergo radical surgery for NSCLC between January 2010 and December 2015 at Shanghai Chest Hospital and Huadong Hospital were collected from a lung cancer database. Patients diagnosed with unexpected malignant pleural nodules intraoperatively were enrolled in this retrospective study.Results: A total of 181 NSCLC patients were diagnosed with unexpected malignant PD intraoperatively and confirmed with postoperatively histological examinations. Out of these, 80 (44.2%) patients received pleural nodule biopsies alone, and 101 (55.8%) received primary tumor resection (47 with sublobar resection and 54 with lobectomy). The median progression-free survival and overall survival for all patients were 13 and 41 months respectively. Patients in the resection group had significantly better progression-free survival (19.0 vs. 10.0 months, P < 0.0001) and overall survival (48.0 vs. 33.0 months, P < 0.0001) than patients in the biopsy group. In the resection group, there was no statistical difference between patients with sublobar resection and lobectomy (P = 0.34). Univariate and multivariate analyses identified primary tumor resection, targeted adjuvant therapy, and tumor size (≤ 3 cm) as independent prognostic factors.Conclusions: NSCLC patients with unexpected intraoperative PD potentially benefited from surgical resection of the primary tumor and multidisciplinary targeted therapy, particularly when tumor size did not exceed 3 cm. Our data demonstrated that the resection type was not associated with survival differences, which remains to be defined with a larger sample size
