    The Nutritional Composition of Maca in Hypocotyls ( Lepidium meyenii

    Maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp.) was introduced to China in the recent two decades. Proximate compositions and secondary metabolites in dried maca tuber powders of different cultivation areas and colour types were analyzed and compared in order to provide the scientific guideline for its application. Cultivation region significantly affects the compositions of maca. The protein content of maca ranged from 9.31% to 21.02% by dry basis of maca powders and Xiaopingba-Y, Yulong-Y, and Pamirs-Y have the higher protein contents. The essential amino acids (EAA) contents ranged from 189.19 to 312.90 mg/g protein. The crude lipid content of different maca ranged from 0.59% to 1.00% and has no significant difference (P>0.05). The total dietary fiber (TDF) contents ranged from 17.82% to 26.00% and soluble dietary fiber (SDF) ranged from 2.46% to 7.88%, respectively. Maca samples were rich in Na, Mg, Ca, and K elements which ranged 138.3–187.8, 625.2–837.2, 3838.9–4502.7, and 5394.8–8063.3 mg/kg dry matter (DM). Xiaopingba-Y has the highest benzyl glucosinolate content which was 2.31 mg/g DM. Peru-Y and Xiaopingba have the higher contents of total alkaloids contents which was 2.61 and 2.56 mg/kg DM. Yongsheng-Y, Yulong-Y, and Pamirs-Y were rich in N-benzyl hexadecanamide contents, which were 0.164, 0.174, and 0.173 mg/g DM, respectively. Significant higher protein, total dietary fiber, insoluble dietary fiber, total alkaloids, and benzyl glucosinolate contents were found in purple and black maca compared to yellow maca in Pamirs, while there was no significant difference in N-benzyl hexadecanamide content

    The Composition Analysis of Maca (<i>Lepidium meyenii</i>Walp.) from Xinjiang and Its Antifatigue Activity

    Environment would affect the nutritional composition of maca, especially its secondary metabolite. The chemical compositions and function of Xinjiang maca were not very clear. The chemical compositions and bioactivity of Xinjiang maca were determined. A mouse model was also used to evaluate the antifatigue activity of Xinjiang maca as a forced swimming test was performed and certain biochemical parameters related were estimated. The results show that the Xinjiang maca is rich in protein content and amino acids, especially branched chain amino acids such as Valine and Isoleucine related to the effect of antifatigue. It also has considerable minerals ions such as Ca and Mg. Besides, bioactive ingredients such as maca amide, glucosinolate, and alkaloid of Xinjiang maca are similar to those of maca from other areas, which qualify the biological value of Xinjiang maca. The results of mice model suggest that maca has a dose-dependent antifatigue activity by decreasing blood lactic acid, as well as increasing liver glycogen content and the forced swimming time.</jats:p

    The Relationship Between Plasma DPP4 Activity to BDNF Ratio and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Population With Normal Glucose Tolerance

    Objective: Since decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and increased dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) activity have both been implicated in the pathogenesis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the aim of our study was to evaluate the association of MCI with plasma DPP4 activity to BDNF ratio (DBR) in an elderly population with normal glucose tolerance.Methods: We cross-sectionally measured C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, nitrotyrosine, 8-iso-PGF2a, DPP4 activity BDNF and calculated the DBR in a total of 1,066 elderly participants in China. MCI was determined by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and finally confirmed by neurologists.Results: An inverse correlation was found between DPP4 activity and BDNF (r = -0.456, P &lt; 0.001) and this inverse correlation was partly mediated by nitrotyrosine and 8-iso-PGF2a. Across rising quartiles of DBR, nitrotyrosine, 8-iso-PGF2a, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 progressively increased, whereas the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score progressively decreased. Subjects in the lowest quartile of BDNF and highest quartiles of DBR and DPP4 activity, had higher MCI risk compared with subjects in the highest quartile of the BDNF and lowest quartiles of DBR and DPP4 activity, respectively (all P &lt; 0.05). The odds ratio for MCI became more pronounced with decreased BDNF and increased DPP4.Conclusion: In conclusion, a negative correlation was found between DPP4 activity and BDNF, and this negative correlation was partly mediated by oxidative stress, not inflammation. The DBR was positively associated with MCI and thus may be used as a novel risk biomarker for MCI in an elderly population with normal glucose tolerance

    Psoriasis (PSO) is a common skin disease affecting approximately 1%–3% of the population, and the incidence rate is increasing yearly. PSO is associated with a dramatically increased risk of cardiovascular disease, the most common of which is atherosclerosis (AS). In the past, inflammation was considered to be the triggering factor of the two comorbidities, but in recent years, studies have found that lipid metabolism disorders increase the probability of atherosclerosis in patients with psoriasis.     Excess risk of major vascular diseases associated with airflow obstruction: a 9-year prospective study of 0.5 million Chinese adults

    Background: China has high COPD rates, even among never regular smokers. Little is known about non-respiratory disease risks especially vascular morbidity and mortality after developing air flow obstruction (AFO) in China adults. Objective: We aimed to investigate the prospective association of prevalent AFO with major vascular morbidity and mortality. Methods: In 2004-8 a nationwide prospective cohort study recruited 512,891 men and women aged 30-79 from ten diverse localities across China, tracking cause-specific mortality and coded episodes of hospitalisation for 9 years. Cox regression yielded adjusted hazards ratios (HRs) for vascular diseases comparing individuals with spirometry-defined prevalent AFO at baseline to those without. Results: Of 489,382 participants with no vascular disease at baseline, 6.8% had AFO, with the prevalence rising steeply with age. Individuals with prevalent AFO had significantly increased in vascular mortality (n=1,429; adjusted HR=1.29, 95% CI 1.21-1.36). There were also increased risks of haemorrhagic stroke (n=823; 1.18, 1.09-1.27), major coronary events (n=635; 1.33, 1.22-1.45) and heart failure (n=543; 2.19, 1.98-2.41).andnbsp; For each outcome, the risk increased progressively with increasing COPD severity and persisted among never regular smokers.
