Subjectification Strategy of Author’s Statement in English Literary Xeno-Narrative

Literary xeno-narrative is a text illustrating the experience of interaction with cultural otherness that focuses on contrasting the in-group/out-group categories, with adaptation stress minimization and mental experience transfer as xeno-narrative functions. The author of the xeno-narrative forms the idea of the perfect reader through the implementation of strategies aimed at the recipient. The subjectification strategy of the author’s statement in literary communication is aimed at the reader’s personal acceptance of the author’s meanings in the text and the reader’s emotional involvement and empathy. This process is represented through the lexical and emotionally connotative language tools in xeno-narrative texts and also readers’ reviews corpus. The results of the study indicate the difference in the process of subjectification, understanding of content and the author’s emotional intentions among the readers with different national worldviews. The study is based on the materials of the electronic corpus of English and Russian readers’ reviews of the analysed narrative text. English-speaking readers recorded thematic units typical for the xeno-narrative and showed a high level of empathy to the immigrants’ experience associated with the personal experience of overcoming otherness. Russian-speaking readers drew on the thematic unit associated with intercultural interaction to a lesser extent, focusing on the timeline of growing up

Semiotics of the Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle: Language and Musical Codes

Статья посвящена комплексному описанию музыкального языка Рихарда Вагнера как сложной семиотической системы, представляющей собой единство двух знаковых систем, музыки и вербального языка. Для исследования знаковой природы либретто и музыкальной партитуры на материале одного из ключевых произведений немецкого композитора, оперной тетралогии «Кольцо нибелунга», применяется мультимодальный аналитический подход. Лингвосемиотический анализ монологов, диалогов, полилогов и авторских ремарок, формирующих либретто, позволил охарактеризовать его как семиотическое пространство взаимодействия вербальных, невербальных знаков, а также знаков смешанного характера и выделить языковые средства их актуализации. Музыка произведения Вагнера как семиотическая система базируется на детально разработанном композитором принципе лейтмотивного развития, в основе которого находится лейтмотив как доминирующий семиотический конструкт. Под лейтмотивом в работе понимается относительно краткий музыкальный оборот, многократно повторяющийся на протяжении музыкального произведения и служащий обозначением или характеристикой определенного лица, предмета, явления, эмоции или отвлеченного понятия. Анализ нотного текста партитуры тетралогии «Кольцо нибелунга» позволил выделить знаки, репрезентируемые различными музыкальными лейтмотивами, которые характеризуют конкретных персонажей, выражают их чувства, физические и эмоциональные состояния, отражают взаимодействие героев, определяют сложный символический, мифоритуальный контекст опер цикла. Кроме того, было отмечено, что в партитуре композитором применяются приемы интонационной драматургии, связанные с изменением знаков-лейтмотивов в структурно-семиотическом аспекте, выдвижением на первый план драматургического развития, предусмотренного линией либреттоThe article is devoted to a detailed description of Richard Wagner’s musical language as a complex semiotic system which combines music and verbal language. The authors apply a multimodal analytic approach to study the semiotic nature of the libretto and musical score of the opera tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung” (“Der Ring des Nibelungen”), one of the key works of the German composer. Linguo-semiotic analysis of monologues, dialogues, polylogues and the author’s remarks forming the libretto made it possible to characterize it as a semiotic space of interaction of verbal and non-verbal signs, as well as signs of a mixed nature, and to specify linguistic means of their realization. The music of Wagner’s work as a semiotic system is based on the principle of leitmotif development elaborated by the composer, the leitmotif being the dominant semiotic construct. The leitmotif in the article is understood as a relatively short musical configuration, which is repeated many times throughout the musical work and serves as a characteristic of a certain person, object, phenomenon, emotion or abstract concept. The text analysis of the musical score of the tetralogy “The Ring of the Nibelung” allowed the authors to identify the signs represented by various musical leitmotifs that describe specific characters, express their feelings, physical and emotional states, reflect the interaction of characters, determine the complex symbolic, mythological and ritual context of the operas of the cycle. Cartoons as types of multimodal texts are actively exploited in a media determined political discourse for construction of “others” which is especially characteristic of the British press. In politics “others” can be viewed in two perspectives: intra-cultural and inter-cultural. Intra-cultural perspective presents the relationships between political parties within one culture, e.g. Conservative Party, Labour Party and Liberal Democrat Party within British culture. In the inter-cultural perspective, the attitudes of the particular culture’s politicians towards their counterparts or political groups outside this culture are shown, e.g. Britain’s relationships with Russia, the United States of America, France, etc. The general principles of multimodal analysis being the basic methods for the cartoons interpretation, the idea is that in each of the two perspectives the mechanism of representing the “others” is different. The specific features reveal themselves through the level of interdiscursiveness, emotionality, generalization, detail, use of metaphors, the strategy in frames of which this or that multimodal text contributes to the construction of the image of the “others”Иллюстрация как тип мультимодального текста активно задействована в масс-медиально опосредованном политическом дискурсе для конструирования «чужих», что особенно характерно для британской прессы. The article contains an ethnographic description of the conditions governing the use of the regional sign language in Krasnoyarsk Krai within the modern sociolinguistic context. The subject of the discussion is the problem of the linguistic design of sign languages in general, including some features of Russian Sign Language. The study provides statistical information and legal norms for the use of this iconic communication system. A study of the current state of Russian Sign Language functioning in Krasnoyarsk Krai allows us to talk about a change in the status of this sign language, an increasing interest in issues related to its applied significance, and reinforces the need to develop new theoretical approaches to its institutionalization

The article provides a systematic description of the trends in the development of the Chinese discursive and communicative linguistics. Discursive research and its results in the Chinese academic community have their own specifics, which are based on the traditional philosophical and ideological foundation and a unique language picture of the world. The scientific findings explicate culturally determined communicative and discursive conventions of the Chinese social interaction. The aim of the research is to highlight the Chinese cultural discourse studies as a new research tradition in the Chinese linguistics of the modern stage, to expand its methodology, and to construct the discursive space of China as the totality of the dominant cultural and communicative vectors, these vectors being an interpretative tool to help understand and evaluate Chinese discoursesСтатья посвящена систематизирующему описанию тенденций развития дискурсивно-коммуникативного направления в китайском языкознании. Автор ксенонарратива формирует представление об идеальном читателе через реализацию стратегий, направленных на реципиента. Стратегия субъективизации авторского высказывания в литературной коммуникации направлена на личностное принятие читателем авторских смыслов в тексте, эмоциональную вовлеченность и эмпатию читателя. Этот процесс репрезентируется через лексические и эмоционально-коннотативные языковые средства в ксенонарративных текстах, а также в корпусе читательских рецензий. Результаты исследования свидетельствуют о разнице процесса субъективизации, понимания содержательных и эмоциональных интенций автора у читателей с разными национальными картинами мира. Modern linguistic research is characterized by a quick reaction to the world events, a response to the challenges of our time in various spheres of public life, a tendency to find an explanation for new linguistic and social phenomena through the cultural and historical perspective. On the one hand, this trend stimulates interest in regional studies, whose topical issues are related to translation of values in constructing the image of the region, revealing of cultural information on the material of local toponyms, solving the problems of contextually determined bilingualism and language policy in the regions with indigenous population. On the other hand, interest in the study of other cultures does not decline and still has vast scientific potential due to the possibility of a more detailed immersion in the peculiarities of cross-cultural communication and the use of new methodological tools for its study.
