    Indiscriminate revelation of dislocations in single crystal SiC by inductively coupled plasma etching

    To reveal dislocations in SiC wafers, conventionally, molten KOH etching method has been widely used. However, when highly doped sites exist on the wafer, the molten KOH etching method is not applicable owing to the enhanced isotropic electrochemical etching phenomenon. In this study, plasma etching is first applied to reveal dislocations in a 4H-SiC wafer with both highly doped and lightly doped areas. The mechanisms of dislocation revelation by dry etching have been theoretically analyzed and it has been revealed that the dislocation revelation ability of dry etching is highly related to the temperature of the etching process. The results demonstrate that inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching can maintain its effectiveness for dislocation revelation of SiC wafers regardless of the doping concentrations. This work offers an alternative approach to indiscriminately and accurately reveal dislocations in SiC wafers

    Autologous temporomandibular joint reconstruction independent of exogenous additives: a proof-of-concept study for guided self-generation

    Joint defects are complex and difficult to reconstruct. By exploiting the body's own regenerative capacity, we aimed to individually generate anatomically precise neo-tissue constructs for autologous joint reconstruction without using any exogenous additives. In a goat model, CT scans of the mandibular condyle including articular surface and a large portion of the ascending ramus were processed using computer-aided design and manufacturing. A corresponding hydroxylapatite negative mold was printed in 3D and temporarily embedded into the transition zone of costal periosteum and perichondrium. A demineralized bone matrix scaffold implanted on the contralateral side served as control. Neo-tissue constructs obtained by guided self-generation exhibited accurate configuration, robust vascularization, biomechanical stability, and function. After autologous replacement surgery, the constructs showed stable results with similar anatomical, histological, and functional findings compared to native controls. Further studies are required to assess long-term outcome and possible extensions to other further applications. The absence of exogenous cells, growth factors, and scaffolds may facilitate clinical translation of this approach

    Baseline elevated Lp-PLA2 is associated with increased risk for re-stenosis after stent placement

    BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a novel biomarker for cardiovascular risk prediction. Whether increased Lp-PLA2 level is associated with re-stenosis after stent-placement is unclear. METHODS: Totally 326 participants eligible for stent-placement were enrolled and divided into two groups according to baseline Lp-PLA2 levels (named normal and elevated groups). Baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between normal and elevated groups. The relationships between Lp-PLA2 and other risk factors with re-stenosis were evaluated. RESULTS: Only the between-group difference of Lp-PLA2 was significant (123.2 ± 33.6 ng/mL vs 336.8 ± 85.4 ng/mL, P < 0.001) while other demographic and clinical characteristics between these two groups were comparable. Approximately 55.1% and 58.5% of participants in normal and elevated groups presented with acute coronary syndrome, and the percentage of tri-vessels stenoses was significantly higher in elevated group (40.8% vs 32.1%, P = 0.016). Nearly 96.0% and 94.0% of participants in normal and elevated Lp-PLA2 groups were placed with drug-eluting stents, and the others were with bare-metal stents. After 1 year’s follow-up, the incidence of clinical end-points was comparable (13.3% vs 15.4%, P = 0.172). Nevertheless, the incidence of re-stenosis was marginally higher in elevated Lp-PLA2 group (8.5% versus 4.6%, P = 0.047). With multivariate analysis, after adjustment for other risk factors, Lp-PLA2 remained an independent predictor for re-stenosis with a hazard ratio of 1.140. No synergistic effect between Lp-PLA2 and other risk factors for re-stenosis was found. CONCLUSION: Increased Lp-PLA2 level is associated with an increased risk of re-stenosis. Lp-PLA2 assessment may be useful in predicting subjects who are at increased risk for re-stenosis

    Elevated serum uric acid is associated with cognitive improvement in older American adults: A large, population-based-analysis of the NHANES database

    BackgroundThe many studies revealing a connection between serum uric acid (SUA) and dementia have reported conflicting results. This study sought to investigate the relations between SUA and cognitive function in older adults.Materials and methodsThe sample was 2,767 American adults aged ≥60 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2014. Cognitive performance was evaluated by the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease test, animal fluency test, digit symbol substitution test, and composite z-score. Multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted to estimate the association between SUA and cognitive function.ResultsSUA level and cognitive function were significantly, positively correlated. Age significantly correlated with the association between SUA and cognitive function.ConclusionThese findings support a connection between SUA and cognition, showing a positive link between SUA and cognitive scores among older American adults. We contend that a slight rise in uric acid within the normal range is advantageous for enhanced cognition. To confirm the precise dose-time-response relation, more tests will be needed

    The dynamic changes of mango (Mangifera indica L.) epicuticular wax during fruit development and effect of epicuticular wax on Colletotrichum gloeosporioides invasion

    Mango fruits are susceptible to diseases, such as anthracnose, during fruit development, leading to yield reduction. Epicuticular wax is closely related to resistance of plants to pathogenic bacterial invasion. In this study, the effect of mango fruit epicuticular wax on the invasion of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was investigated, followed by to understand the changes of wax chemical composition and crystal morphology during mango fruit development using GC-MS and SEM. Results showed that the epicuticular wax of mango fruits can prevent the invasion of C. gloeosporioides, and ‘Renong’ showed the strongest resistance to C. gloeosporioides. The wax content of four mango varieties first increased and then decreased from 40 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 120 DAFB. In addition, 95 compounds were detected in the epicuticular wax of the four mango varieties at five developmental periods, in which primary alcohols, terpenoids and esters were the main wax chemical composition. Furthermore, the surface wax structure of mango fruit changed dynamically during fruit development, and irregular platelet-like crystals were the main wax structure. The present study showed the changes of wax content, chemical composition and crystal morphology during mango fruit development, and the special terpenoids (squalene, farnesyl acetate and farnesol) and dense crystal structure in the epicuticular wax of ‘Renong’ fruit may be the main reason for its stronger resistance to C. gloeosporioides than other varieties. Therefore, these results provide a reference for the follow-up study of mango fruit epicuticular wax synthesis mechanism and breeding
