Orexin Synthesis and Response in the Gut
AbstractOrexin (hypocretin) appears to play a role in the regulation of energy balances. Previous reports have indicated that orexin-containing neurons are found only in the lateral hypothalamic (LH) area. We show that a subset of neurons in the gut which also express leptin receptors display orexin-like immunoreactivity and express functional orexin receptors. Orexin excites secretomotor neurons in the guinea pig submucosal plexus and increases motility. Moreover, fasting upregulates the phosphorylated form of cAMP response element–binding protein (pCREB) in orexin-immunoreactive neurons, indicating a functional response to food status in these cells. Together, these data suggest that orexin in the gut may play an even more intimate role in regulating energy homeostasis than it does in the CNS
Feasibility Study on Using Low Grade Silicon Carbide and Stone Sludge to Fabricate Eco Bricks
The aim of this study was to introduce 5% up to 40% of low grade silicon carbide (LGSC), with construction excavated soil before the soil being reused as raw material in Eco brickmaking. Furthermore, stone sludge was added to mix with LGSC to fabricate eco bricks. The results indicated that the use of 10% granite sludge, 30% LGSC and 5% brick waste clinkers could produce grade-2 eco bricks in sintering temperature 1,050°c, however 30% granite sludge was substituted to obtain the same grade eco bricks. Water absorption of eco bricks has increased during the addition ratio of LGSC increased. However, the compressive strength increased while water absorption decreased during the operation temperature increased from 1,020°c. to 1,050°c
Ocimum gratissimum Aqueous Extract Induces Apoptotic Signalling in Lung Adenocarcinoma Cell A549
Ocimum gratissimum (OG) is widely used as a traditional herb for its antibacterial activity in Taiwan. Recently, antitumor effect of OG on breast cancer cell is also reported; however, the effects of OG on human pulmonary adenocarcinoma cell A549 remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether aqueous OG extract (OGE) affects viability of A549 cells and the signals induced by OGE in A549 cells. Cell viability assays revealed that OGE significantly and dose-dependently decreased the viability of A549 cell but not that of BEAS-2B cell. Morphological examination and DAPI staining indicated that OGE induced cell shrinkage and DNA condensation for A549 cells. Further investigation showed that OGE enhanced activation of caspase-3, caspase-9 and caspase-8 and increased protein level of Apaf-1 and Bak, but diminished the level of Bcl-2. Additionally, OGE inhibited the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) yet enhanced the phosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 MAP kinase (p38). In conclusion, our findings indicate that OGE suppressed the cell viability of A549 cells, which may result from the activation of apoptotic signaling and the inhibition of anti-apoptotic signaling, suggesting that OGE might be beneficial to lung carcinoma treatment
THE EFFECTS Of VOLLEYBALL ATTACKING ON SCORE POINTS: A CASE STUDY OF 2014 TVL IN TAIWAN
Volleyball is a sport in which team tactical and players' attacking skills determine to score points. Therefore, an effective team tactical is achieved by main spikers' and middle blockers' skills. To name but a few, delayed spike, open spike and back-row spike are main spikers' skills, yet quick spike, and individual time difference attack are associated with middle blockers'. Under this aspect, a case study of male teams of Taiwan Top Volleyball League (TVL) was yield out, which aimed at exploring the effects of team tactical and players attacking skills on score points. The results indicated that the attacking point ratio of main spikers and middle blockers in the champion team was higher than others. This was because the middle blockers gave cover to main spikers as attacking. By doing so, it promoted point ratio to main spikers. Furthermore, it found that to strengthen main spikers and middle blockers' skills would increase team's attacking point ratio
Interpretable Self-Attention Temporal Reasoning for Driving Behavior Understanding
Performing driving behaviors based on causal reasoning is essential to ensure
driving safety. In this work, we investigated how state-of-the-art 3D
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) perform on classifying driving behaviors
based on causal reasoning. We proposed a perturbation-based visual explanation
method to inspect the models' performance visually. By examining the video
attention saliency, we found that existing models could not precisely capture
the causes (e.g., traffic light) of the specific action (e.g., stopping).
Therefore, the Temporal Reasoning Block (TRB) was proposed and introduced to
the models. With the TRB models, we achieved the accuracy of ,
which outperform the state-of-the-art 3D CNNs from previous works. The
attention saliency also demonstrated that TRB helped models focus on the causes
more precisely. With both numerical and visual evaluations, we concluded that
our proposed TRB models were able to provide accurate driving behavior
prediction by learning the causal reasoning of the behaviors.Comment: Submitted to IEEE ICASSP 2020; Pytorch code will be released soo
Electrocardiographic and cardiometabolic risk markers of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in physically active adults: CHIEF heart study
AimThis study was aimed to investigate the association of cardiometabolic and ECG markers with left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) in physically active Asian young adults, which has not been clarified in prior studies. Methods and resultsA total of 2,019 men aged 18–43 years were included from the military in Taiwan. All the subjects underwent anthropometric, hemodynamic, and blood metabolic marker measurements. Physical fitness was investigated by time for a 3,000-m run. LVDD was defined by presence of either one of the three echocardiographic criteria: (1) mitral inflow E/A ratio < 0.8 with a peak E velocity of > 50 cm/s, (2) tissue Doppler lateral mitral annulus e′ <10 cm/s, and (3) E/e′ ratio > 14. Multiple logistic regressions with adjustments for age, physical fitness, and pulse rate were conducted to determine the association of cardiometabolic and ECG markers with LVDD. The prevalence of LVDD was estimated to be 4.16% (N = 84). Of the cardiometabolic markers, central obesity, defined as waist circumference ≥ 90 cm, was the only independent marker of LVDD [odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval: 2.97 (1.63–5.41)]. There were no association for hypertension, prediabetes, and dyslipidemia. Of the ECG markers, left atrial enlargement and incomplete right bundle branch block/intraventricular conduction delay were the independent ECG markers of LVDD [OR: 2.98 (1.28–6.94) and 1.94 (1.09–3.47), respectively]. There was borderline association for Cornell-based left ventricular hypertrophy and inferior T wave inversion [OR: 1.94 (0.97–3.63) and 2.44 (0.98–6.08), respectively].ConclusionIn the physically active Asian young male adults, central obesity and some ECG markers for left heart abnormalities were useful to identify LVDD
Genomic diversity of citrate fermentation in Klebsiella pneumoniae
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It has long been recognized that <it>Klebsiella pneumoniae </it>can grow anaerobically on citrate. Genes responsible for citrate fermentation of <it>K. pneumoniae </it>were known to be located in a 13-kb gene cluster on the chromosome. By whole genome comparison of the available <it>K. pneumoniae </it>sequences (MGH 78578, 342, and NTUH-K2044), however, we discovered that the fermentation gene cluster was present in MGH 78578 and 342, but absent in NTUH-K2044. In the present study, the previously unknown genome diversity of citrate fermentation among <it>K. pneumoniae </it>clinical isolates was investigated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using a genomic microarray containing probe sequences from multiple <it>K. pneumoniae </it>strains, we investigated genetic diversity among <it>K. pneumoniae </it>clinical isolates and found that a genomic region containing the citrate fermentation genes was not universally present in all strains. We confirmed by PCR analysis that the gene cluster was detectable in about half of the strains tested. To demonstrate the metabolic function of the genomic region, anaerobic growth of <it>K. pneumoniae </it>in artificial urine medium (AUM) was examined for ten strains with different clinical histories and genomic backgrounds, and the citrate fermentation potential was found correlated with the genomic region. PCR detection of the genomic region yielded high positive rates among a variety of clinical isolates collected from urine, blood, wound infection, and pneumonia. Conserved genetic organizations in the vicinity of the citrate fermentation gene clusters among <it>K. pneumoniae</it>, <it>Salmonella enterica</it>, and <it>Escherichia coli </it>suggest that the13-kb genomic region were not independently acquired.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Not all, but nearly half of the <it>K. pneumoniae </it>clinical isolates carry the genes responsible for anaerobic growth on citrate. Genomic variation of citrate fermentation genes in <it>K. pneumoniae </it>may contribute to metabolic diversity and adaptation to variable nutrient conditions in different environments.</p
