Super-compact universal quantum logic gates with inversedesigned elements

Integrated quantum photonic circuit is a promising platform for the realization of quantum information processing in the future. To achieve the largescale quantum photonic circuits, the applied quantum logic gates should be as small as possible for the high-density integration on chips. Here, we report the implementation of super-compact universal quantum logic gates on silicon chips by the method of inverse design. In particular, the fabricated controlled-NOT gate and Hadamard gate are both nearly a vacuum wavelength, being the smallest optical quantum gates reported up to now. We further design the quantum circuit by cascading these fundamental gates to perform arbitrary quantum processing, where the corresponding size is about several orders smaller than that of previous quantum photonic circuits. Our study paves the way for the realization of largescale quantum photonic chips with integrated sources, and can possess important applications in the field of quantum information processes

Discovery of Endothelium and Mesenchymal Properties of Primo Vessels in the Mesentery

Recent evidences demonstrated that endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndMT) has a crucial role in cancer and is recognized as a unique source of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). Primo vascular system (PVS) is a new circulatory system which may play an important role in cancer metastasis and regeneration. In the current study, we applied previously established time-saving method to identify primo vessels and further investigated the immunocytochemical properties of primo vessels. Both primo vessels and primary primo vessel cells in the mesentery expressed endothelial markers and fibroblast markers. Double-labeling experiments demonstrated that endothelial and fibroblast markers are coexpressed in primo vessels. In addition, under the stimulation of TGF-β1 in vitro, primary primo vessel cells differentiated into fibroblasts. Therefore, we found that primo vessels in the mesentery had a transitional structure between endothelium and mesenchymal. This is a new finding of EndMT in normal postnatal animals

Cassava genome from a wild ancestor to cultivated varieties

Cassava is a major tropical food crop in the Euphorbiaceae family that has high carbohydrate production potential and adaptability to diverse environments. Here we present the draft genome sequences of a wild ancestor and a domesticated variety of cassava and comparative analyses with a partial inbred line. We identify 1,584 and 1,678 gene models specific to the wild and domesticated varieties, respectively, and discover high heterozygosity and millions of single-nucleotide variations. Our analyses reveal that genes involved in photosynthesis, starch accumulation and abiotic stresses have been positively selected, whereas those involved in cell wall biosynthesis and secondary metabolism, including cyanogenic glucoside formation, have been negatively selected in the cultivated varieties, reflecting the result of natural selection and domestication. Differences in microRNA genes and retrotransposon regulation could partly explain an increased carbon flux towards starch accumulation and reduced cyanogenic glucoside accumulation in domesticated cassava. These results may contribute to genetic improvement of cassava through better understanding of its biology

【Abstract】The sympathetic nervous system–catecholamine–uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) axis plays an essential role in non-shivering adaptive thermogenesis. However, whether there exists a direct effector that physically connects catecholamine signalling to UCP1 in response to acute cold is unknown. Here we report that outer mitochondrial membrane-located AIDA is phosphorylated at S161 by the catecholamine-activated protein kinase A (PKA). Phosphorylated AIDA translocates to the intermembrane space, where it binds to and activates the uncoupling activity of UCP1 by promoting cysteine oxidation of UCP1.Adipocyte-specific depletion of AIDA abrogates UCP1-dependent thermogenesis, resulting in hypothermia during acute cold exposure. Re-expression of S161A-AIDA, unlike wild-type AIDA, fails to restore the acute cold response in Aida-knockout mice. The PKA–AIDA–UCP1 axis is highly conserved in mammals, including hibernators. Denervation of the sympathetic postganglionic fibres abolishes cold-induced AIDA-dependent thermogenesis. These findings uncover a direct mechanistic link between sympathetic input and UCP1-mediated adaptive thermogenesis. We thank Y. Li, E. Gnaiger, T. Kuwaki, J. R. B. Lighton, E. T. Chouchani and D. Decoupling Regional Economic Growth from Industrial CO2 Emissions: Empirical Evidence from the 13 Prefecture-Level Cities in Jiangsu Province

Amid global climate warming, it is necessary to explore the decoupling relationship between economic growth (EG) and industrial CO2 emissions (ICEs). This paper uses the Tapio decoupling model and the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) model synthetically to analyze the decoupling relationship between EG and ICEs and reveal the driving force of growth of CO2 emissions (CEs) based on ICE panel data from 13 prefecture-level cities in Jiangsu province from 2011 to 2015. From the research results, it can be seen that the decoupling status in southern Jiangsu, middle Jiangsu and northern Jiangsu presented weak decoupling (WD), weak negative decoupling (WND) and WD, respectively. In 2011–2013, seven prefecture-level cities exhibited states of WD, and strong decoupling (SD) occurred only in Zhenjiang, with a decoupling index value of −0.3359. In 2013–2015, five prefecture-level cities exhibited states of WD. The energy intensity and carbon emission intensity had negative inhibitory effects on ICEs, and economic development and the energy structure had positive promotion effects on ICEs. The research results have important theoretical and practical significance for future energy savings, carbon emissions reductions and the realization of a low-carbon economy in the economic development of Jiangsu

BM(book-to-market ratio) factor: medium-term momentum and long-term reversal

Abstract To explain medium-term momentum and long-term reversal, we use the difference between the optional model and the CAPM model to construct a winner-loser portfolio. According to the CAPM model’s zero explanatory ability with respect to stock market anomalies, we obtain an anomaly interpretative model. This study shows that this anomaly interpretative model can explain stock market perceptions and medium-term momentum. Most importantly, BM is a critical factor in the model’s explanatory ability. We present a robustness test, which includes selecting new sample data, adding new auxiliary variables, changing sample years, and adding industry fixed effects. In general, the BM effect does have considerable explanatory power in medium-term momentum and long-term reversal

To monitor study and analyze the social public service quality is conducive to promote the construction of a service-oriented government that is satisfactory to the people. In this paper, third-party quality monitoring was conducted in 14 cities of Liaoning Province from 11 public service fields such as living environment, public transportation, infrastructure, medical and health care, public security, culture and sports, compulsory education, pension service, employment service, social security and administrative convenience. The results showed that the public’s satisfaction with social security, compulsory education, living environment, public security and employment services was low, which needed to be paid attention to and further improved by Liaoning Provincial Government
