    NEW DATA ON THE RARE CHENGJIANG (LOWER CAMBRIAN, SOUTH CHINA) LINGULOID BRACHIOPOD XIANSHANELLA HAIKOUENSIS

    ABSTRACT—The remarkable brachiopod Xianshanella haikouensis, from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, was briefly re-ported based on only two extraordinarily preserved specimens. Details of valve interiors remain unknown due to a lack of available material. We herein reillustrate the holotype of X. haikouensis, and, on the basis of many additional specimens from the type locality, provide further information on this brachiopod taxon, including shell ornamentation, a U-shaped digestive tract, mantle canal systems, lophophores, muscle scars, and well-defined visceral areas in the valves. This exceptional brachiopod is characterized by a biconvex, rounded, knob-shaped shell lacking visible pseudointerarea in the valves, an elongate and muscular pedicle, and, especially, its possession of exceptional setal fringes. A restudy of a number of new specimens justifies assigning Xianshanella to the family Obolidae. The elongate and horny setae of X. haikouensis, coupled with the massive pedicle in many cases with its end attached to shells of other animals, indicate that this species was an epibenthic, sessile suspension feeder, attached by a pedicle

    A Cambrian fossil from the Chengjiang fauna sharing characteristics with gilled lobopodians, opabiniids and radiodonts

    Parvibellus atavus gen. et sp. nov. from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang fauna of China is a small fossil having a distinct cephalic region bearing a pair of lateral projections and a circular, ventral mouth. The trunk bears eleven pairs of probably flap-like appendages and a short pair of terminal projections. This character combination is unique for the Chengjiang biota. A circular ventral mouth is seen in Radiodonta and in some of the gilled lobopodians which are thought to be among the radiodont’s closest relatives. P. atavus, gilled lobopodians, opabiniids, and radiodonts also share the putative character of flap-like appendages along the trunk. However, the new fossil differs from radiodonts and gilled lobopodians by the absence of enlarged and/or raptorial frontal appendages. It also differs from gilled lobopodians by lacking in ventral lobopod limbs and from radiodonts by lacking in stalked eyes. It provisionally resolves as a sister-group to a clade containing the gilled lobopodians, opabiniids, and radiodonts, and could potentially be part of an early radiation of the nektonic lower stem—Euarthropoda

    Evidence for gill slits and a pharynx in Cambrian vetulicolians: implications for the early evolution of deuterostomes.

    BACKGROUND: Vetulicolians are a group of Cambrian metazoans whose distinctive bodyplan continues to present a major phylogenetic challenge. Thus, we see vetulicolians assigned to groups as disparate as deuterostomes and ecdysozoans. This divergence of opinions revolves around a strikingly arthropod-like body, but one that also bears complex lateral structures on its anterior section interpreted as pharyngeal openings. Establishing the homology of these structures is central to resolving where vetulicolians sit in metazoan phylogeny. RESULTS: New material from the Chengjiang Lagerstätte helps to resolve this issue. Here, we demonstrate that these controversial structures comprise grooves with a series of openings. The latter are oval in shape and associated with a complex anatomy consistent with control of their opening and closure. Remains of what we interpret to be a musculature, combined with the capacity for the grooves to contract, indicate vetulicolians possessed a pumping mechanism that could process considerable volumes of seawater. Our observations suggest that food captured in the anterior cavity was transported to dorsal and ventral gutters, which then channeled material to the intestine. This arrangement appears to find no counterpart in any known fossil or extant arthropod (or any other ecdysozoan). Anterior lateral perforations, however, are diagnostic of deuterostomes. CONCLUSIONS: If the evidence is against vetulicolians belonging to one or other group of ecdysozoan, then two phylogenetic options seem to remain. The first is that such features as vetulicolians possess are indicative of either a position among the bilaterians or deuterostomes but apart from the observation that they themselves form a distinctive and recognizable clade current evidence can permit no greater precision as to their phylogenetic placement. We argue that this is too pessimistic a view, and conclude that evidence points towards vetulicolians being members of the stem-group deuterostomes; a group best known as the chordates (amphioxus, tunicates, vertebrates), but also including the ambulacrarians (echinoderms, hemichordates), and xenoturbellids. If the latter, first they demonstrate that these members of the stem group show few similarities to the descendant crown group representatives.     Dam failure environmental standards in China based on ecosystem service value

    Dam failure risk standards are the foundation of risk decision-making for dam managers. However, as an important component of dam failure risk standards, there are currently no unified environmental risk standards. Drawing on research ideas of ecological economics on ecosystem service values and equivalent factor methods, this study quantified environmental values and effectively connected environmental standards with existing standards using the ALARP principle and the F-N curve. Considering the differences in environmental and economic conditions in different regions, a risk preference matrix was constructed to determine the risk preference of each region and formulate the dam failure environmental risk standards for China. This study presents a preliminary exploration of the formulation of dam failure environmental risk standards, providing new methods and ideas for subsequent research

    A New Phylogenetic Inference Based on Genetic Attribute Reduction for Morphological Data

    To address the instability of phylogenetic trees in morphological datasets caused by missing values, we present a phylogenetic inference method based on a concept decision tree (CDT) in conjunction with attribute reduction. First, a reliable initial phylogenetic seed tree is created using a few species with relatively complete morphological information by using biologists’ prior knowledge or by applying existing tools such as MrBayes. Second, using a top-down data processing approach, we construct concept-sample templates by performing attribute reduction at each node in the initial phylogenetic seed tree. In this way, each node is turned into a decision point with multiple concept-sample templates, providing decision-making functions for grafting. Third, we apply a novel matching algorithm to evaluate the degree of similarity between the species’ attributes and their concept-sample templates and to determine the location of the species in the initial phylogenetic seed tree. In this manner, the phylogenetic tree is established step by step. We apply our algorithm to several datasets and compare it with the maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference methods using the two evaluation criteria of accuracy and stability. The experimental results indicate that as the proportion of missing data increases, the accuracy of the CDT method remains at 86.5%, outperforming all other methods and producing a reliable phylogenetic tree

    Geometric morphometric assessment of Guanshan trilobites (Yunnan Province, China) reveals a limited diversity of palaeolenid taxa

    The Guanshan Biota is a typical Burgess Shale-type Cambrian-aged Lagerstätte with diverse trilobites. As such, the taxonomy of trilobites from the Guanshan Biota, especially the palaeolenid group, has been the focus of research over the last decade. To develop this research, we present a geometric morphometric analysis of cranidial shape in 60 specimens from three sections of the Guanshan Biota from the Wulongqing Formation (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 4), Yunnan Province, South China. We show that cranidia of Megapalaeolenus deprati and Palaeolenus douvillei occupy distinct regions of morphospaces and that P. douvillei and P. "lantenoisi" occupy the same region of morphospace. Combined with qualitative observation on the thorax, P. "lantenoisi" is here considered a junior synonym of P. douvillei. Megapalaeolenus deprati is still considered valid and is distinguished from P. douvillei by its rounded glabella, longer palpebral lobes, shorter ocular ridges, and more developed posterolateral projections. Its pleural spines are more curved, and pleural lobes are markedly wider than P. douvillei. These results highlight that the supposed diversity of palaeolenid taxa in lower Cambrian deposits need reconsideration, potentially using similar morphometric methods

    Four Autophagy-Related lncRNAs Predict the Prognosis of HCC through Coexpression and ceRNA Mechanism

    Abnormally expressed long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been reported to affect the occurrence and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by modulating the autophagy axis. However, none of studies has explored the clinical significance of these autophagy-related lncRNAs in HCC comprehensively. In this study, the RNA-seq, miRNA-seq, and clinical data of normal and HCC patients from the TCGA database and autophagy genes from the Human Autophagy Database were extracted. Subsequently, we screened out 78 differentially expressed autophagy-related lncRNAs, and four prognostic-related lncRNAs (LUCAT1, AC099850.3, ZFPM2-AS1, and AC009005.1) were eventually used to develop the prognostic model. This signature could be regarded as an independent prognostic signature for HCC patients and has the highest prediction efficiency than other clinicopathological factors for the 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival (AUC=0.764,0.738,and 0.717, respectively). Additionally, regardless of whether the clinical information is complete for HCC patients, the autophagy-related lncRNA model shows a good predictive power for the overall survival. Importantly, the coexpression network of 4 lncRNAs and 11 autophagy-related genes was constructed. Moreover, based on the bioinformatic analyses, our results found that LUCAT1 and ZFPM2-AS1 may affect the autophagic activity in HCC through the hsa-miR-495-3p/DLC1 and hsa-miR-515-5p/DAPK2 axis, respectively. In conclusion, we establish an effective prognostic model for HCC patients and shed new light on the autophagy-related regulatory mechanisms of the identified lncRNAs

    Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Previous studies have shown several long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play various roles in HCC progression, but no research has focused on the expression pattern of microRNA clusters encoded in lncRNAs. The Ftx gene encodes a lncRNA which harbors 2 clusters of microRNAs in its introns, the miR-374b/421 cluster and the miR-545/374a cluster. To date, no research has focused on the role of the miR-545/374a and miR-374b/421 clusters in HBV-related HCC. In this study, 66 pairs of HBV-related HCC tissue and matched non-cancerous liver tissue specimens were analyzed for the expression of the Ftx microRNA clusters. Our results showed that the miR-545/374a cluster was upregulated in HBV-HCC tissue and significantly correlated with prognosis-related clinical features, including histological grade, metastasis and tumor capsule. Transfection studies with microRNA mimics and inhibitors revealed that miR-545/374a expression promoted in vitro cell proliferation, cell migration and invasion. The wild-type HBV-genome-containing plasmid or full-length HBx protein encoding plasmid was transfected into the Bel-7402 cell line and observed for their influence on miR-545/374a expression. We found that transfection of the HBV genome or HBx alone resulted in an increase in miR-545/374a expression. Next, by monitoring the expression of sera miR-545/374a before and after surgical tumor excision, we found serum miR-545/374a was tumor-derived and exhibited a sharp decrease 25 days after tumor excision. We also examined the gender-based difference in miR-545/374a expression among HCC patients and utilized microRNA target prediction software to find the targets of miR-545/374a. One of these targets, namely estrogen-related receptor gamma (ESRRG) was inversely correlated with miR-545 expression. In conclusion, the overexpression of miR-545/374a cluster located in the Ftx lncRNA is partially responsible for a poor prognosis, and monitoring sera levels of miR-545/374a may be a useful diagnostic marker for HCC
