Translation and the materialities of communication

This article provides the theoretical coordinates for a set of concerns recently emergent in the humanities that place materiality and its cognates, mediality and technicity, at the centre of intellectual enquiry. The fields of media theory and media philosophy on the one hand, and book history and textual bibliography on the other, despite tenuous links between their intellectual traditions, have each in their own way highlighted the importance that objects, things, media and machines play in the very stakes of civilization. This article works through the implications of this thinking for translation and the study of translation

Pandora's Tongues

Pandora's Tongues — This paper looks at translation not from the perspective of Babel, the "male god" as Jacques Derrida and George Steiner do, but from the perspective of Pandora, the first woman of the Greek creation myth, in order to offer a feminized version of the primal scattering of languages. The aim is to pose through the figure of Pandora questions about language and woman, and by extension, the mother tongue and female sexuality. Whilst the myth of the tower of Babel makes visible the filiations of translation and the word of the Father, the myth of Pandora allows us to uncover the matrix between translation and the mother tongue, presents us, in other words, with new possibilities for translation and gender

The Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English provides the general reader, students and teachers at all levels with an historical analytical survey of the theory and practice of literary translation into English
