Complementary Roles of Hippocampus and Medial Entorhinal Cortex in Episodic Memory
Spatial mapping and navigation are figured prominently in the extant literature that describes hippocampal function. The medial entorhinal cortex is likewise attracting increasing interest, insofar as evidence accumulates that this area also contributes to spatial information processing. Here, we discuss recent electrophysiological findings that offer an alternate view of hippocampal and medial entorhinal function. These findings suggest complementary contributions of the hippocampus and medial entorhinal cortex in support of episodic memory, wherein hippocampal networks encode sequences of events that compose temporally and spatially extended episodes, whereas medial entorhinal networks disambiguate overlapping episodes by binding sequential events into distinct memories.National Institute of Mental Health Grants (MH51570, MH071702); National Science Foundation (Science of Learning Center grant SBE-0354378

Bond-Propagation Algorithm for Thermodynamic Functions in General 2D Ising Models
Recently, we developed and implemented the bond propagation algorithm for
calculating the partition function and correlation functions of random bond
Ising models in two dimensions. The algorithm is the fastest available for
calculating these quantities near the percolation threshold. In this paper, we
show how to extend the bond propagation algorithm to directly calculate
thermodynamic functions by applying the algorithm to derivatives of the
partition function, and we derive explicit expressions for this transformation.
We also discuss variations of the original bond propagation procedure within
the larger context of Y-Delta-Y-reducibility and discuss the relation of this
class of algorithm to other algorithms developed for Ising systems. We conclude
with a discussion on the outlook for applying similar algorithms to other
models.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures; submitte
Exploring the electric field around a loop of static charge: Rectangles, stadiums, ellipses, and knots
We study the electric field around a continuous one-dimensional loop of
static charge, under the assumption that the charge is distributed uniformly
along the loop. For rectangular or stadium-shaped loops in the plane, we find
that the electric field can undergo a symmetry-breaking pitchfork bifurcation
as the loop is elongated; the field can have either one or three zeros,
depending on the loop's aspect ratio. For knotted charge distributions in
three-dimensional space, we compute the electric field numerically and compare
our results to previously published theoretical bounds on the number of
equilibrium points around charged knots. Our computations reveal that the
previous bounds are far from sharp. The numerics also suggest conjectures for
the actual minimum number of equilibrium points for all charged knots with five
or fewer crossings. In addition, we provide the first images of the
equipotential surfaces around charged knots, and visualize their topological
transitions as the level of the potential is varied
