    OR-008 ERK-BAX signaling is involved in GLP-1-mediated antidepressant effects of metformin and exercise in CUMS mice

    Objective Both depression itself and antidepressant medication have been reported to be significantly related to the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a treatment target for T2DM, has a neuroprotective effect. As an enhancer and sensitiser of GLP-1, metformin has been reported to be safe for the neurodevelopment. The present study aimed to determine whether and how GLP-1 mediates antidepressant effects of metformin and exercise in mice. Methods Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 8 weeks. From the 4th week, CUMS mice were subjected to oral metformin treatment and/or treadmill running. A videocomputerized tracking system was used to record behaviors of mice for a 5-min session. ELISA, western blotting and immunohistochemistry were used to examine gene expression in mouse serum or hippocampus. Results Our results supported the validity of metformin as a useful antidepressant; moreover, treadmill running favored metformin effects on exploratory behaviors and serum corticosterone levels. CUMS reduced GLP-1 protein levels and phosphorylation levels of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2), but increased protein levels of B-cell lymphoma 2-associated X-protein (BAX) in mice hippocampus. All these changes were restored by both single and combined treatment with metformin and exercise. Conclusions Our findings have demonstrated that ERK-BAX signaling is involved in GLP-1-mediated antidepressant effects of metformin and exercise, which may provide a novel topic for future clinical research

    The mediating effect of resilience on mental health literacy and positive coping style among Chinese empty nesters: A cross-sectional study

    ObjectivesEmpty nesters in China have limited mental health literacy (MHL), which may lead to poorer health outcomes. Studies demonstrate that MHL is associated with both resilience and positive coping style. However, the potential mechanism of MHL, resilience and positive coping style remain unclear. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the possible mediating role of resilience in the relationship between MHL and positive coping style.MethodIn this cross-sectional study, a total of 363 empty nesters from Huzhou, China were surveyed in 2022. The Chinese version of Mental Health Literacy Scale (C-MHLS), the Chinese version of 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) and the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ-19) were used to assess MHL, resilience, and positive coping style, respectively.ResultsPositive coping style was significantly correlated with MHL and resilience, and MHL was positively correlated with resilience (p < 0.01). MHL can significantly and positively predict the positive coping style, and resilience played a partial intermediary role between MHL and positive coping style, with the intermediary effect of 77.36%.ConclusionThis study indicates that MHL not only directly affected positive coping style, but also indirectly influences positive coping style by increasing the resilience of empty nesters. The results provide an empirical evidence for the development of intervention programs to improve positive coping style directly and indirectly. Consequently, community health servicers should take targeted measures which focus on MHL and resilience as breakthrough points to stimulate positive coping style of empty nesters, and ultimately achieve their overall well-being

    Groundwater Quality in Agricultural Lands Near a Rapidly Urbanized Area, South China

    Understanding the groundwater quality and its factors is a key issue in the context of the use and protection of groundwater resources in agricultural areas near urbanized areas. This study assessed the groundwater quality in agricultural areas in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) by a fuzzy synthetic evaluation method and determined the main factors controlling the groundwater quality by principal component analysis (PCA). Results showed that approximately 85% of groundwater sites in agricultural lands in the PRD were good-quality (drinkable). Drinkable groundwater was 95% and 80% in fissured aquifers and porous aquifers, respectively. Poor-quality groundwater in porous aquifers was controlled by four factors according to the PCA, including the seawater intrusion; the lateral recharge and irrigation of surface water and geogenic sources for As, Fe, NH4+, and Mn; the wastewater infiltration; and the geogenic sources for iodide. By contrast, another four factors, including the infiltration of wastewater and agricultural fertilizers, the geogenic sources for heavy metals, the geogenic sources for iodide, and the irrigation of contaminated river water, were responsible for the poor-quality groundwater in fissured aquifers. Therefore, in the future, the groundwater protection in agricultural lands in the PRD should be strengthened because the majority of groundwater in these areas was good-quality and suitable for drinking and agricultural purposes. In addition, poor-quality groundwater in agricultural lands in the PRD was a small proportion and negligible because the factors for poor-quality groundwater are complicated

    Association between adequacy of antenatal care and neonatal outcomes in Rwanda: a cross-sectional study design using the Rwanda demographic and health surveys

    Abstract Background Maternal and neonatal health services are life-saving interventions for neonatal health outcomes. As Rwanda endeavors to accomplish sustainable development goals, adequate ANC is essential to lessen of neonatal mortality. The utilization of ANC continues to be inadequate and high neonatal mortality rate persevere in Rwanda. Understanding the direct and indirect factors that affect newborn health outcomes is necessary for well-targeted interventions. However, few studies had been conducted in Rwanda to evaluate the importance of ANC in improving neonatal health. This study therefore assessed the association between ANC and neonatal outcomes. Methods The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are household surveys that are cross-sectional, nationally representative, and used to collect data on population, health, and nutrition. Data from the 2010,2015 and 2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Surveys (RDHS) were used. The study involved 17,747 women between the ages of 15 and 49 who had a single live birth and at least one ANC visit in five years prior to each survey. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression, a survey adjusted for clusters at multiple level, and the estimation of adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals were used to evaluate the relationship between the outcome and independent variables. Results Out of 17,747 women ;7638(42.91%) of the mothers had adequate ANC visits and low birth weight (LBW) was found among 833(4.63%) neonates. The birth of a LBW baby (aOR:4.64;95%CI:3.19,6.74) was directly related to increased odds of neonatal death. Mothers aged 20–34 years (aOR:0.40; 95%CI:0.20,0.81), a preceding birth interval of 24months or greater (aOR:0.41:95%CI:0.28,0.60), baby being female (aOR:0.72; 95%CI:0.54,0.96), having adequate ANC visits (aOR:0.64;95% CI:0.46,0.89) and the birth order of the newborn being ranked second or third (aOR:0.60; 95%CI:0.38,0.95) were negatively associated with neonatal death. Conclusion Health education programs targeting teen and primigravida mothers should be encouraged. Among the newborn survival interventions, addressing short birth intervals and the effective management of LBW cases should be explored. The findings confirm the fundamental importance of adequate ANC in the neonatal survival
