G96-1309 Child Abuse: A Painful Secret

    Get PDF
This publication examines causes and prevention of child abuse. Child abuse was not recognized as a serious problem in the U.S. until the 1960s. Data collected by The Children\u27s Defense fund reveals that a child is reported abused or neglected every 13 seconds, of every hour, of every day, 365 days per year. This means that nearly three million boys and girls are confirmed as being abused each year--two percent of the nation\u27s children. In 1995, 140,000 children were treated in hospitals and 2,000 children died from the abuse. In Nebraska in the last ten years, approximately 8,000 cases of child abuse and neglect have been investigated each year. In 1995, 4,000 Nebraska children (52% female and 48% male) were substantiated victims of child abuse and neglect. Neglect was found in 64 percent of confirmed cases, physical abuse in 28 percent, and sexual abuse in 12 percent of confirmed cases (according to the Nebraska Department of Social Services Report on Child Abuse and Neglect Annual Statistics for Calendar Year 1995). In some cases, more than one type of abuse was involved

    G90-986 Strengthening the Couple Relationship

After a couple has been married for a number of years, there seems to be a lack of individual artistry and creativity in the relationship. Each person becomes involved in a routine of relating to the other in a certain way. Patterns develop because of living in the same house and responding to children\u27s needs. Couples develop certain habitual work patterns, see the same people socially, etc. The same ways of relating and behaving may persist, unchallenged and unchanged, for years. The behavior will continue long after it has ceased to produce delight, zest or growth. Therefore, the most destructive of the four horsemen of the apocalypse of marriage sets in--BOREDOM! In principle, each couple has the possibility of recreating their marriage at every moment of their waking life. The couple is like a sculptor in the construction and shaping of their marriage. Given the limitations of one\u27s imagination, courage and skills, the sculptor has many degrees of freedom to create the form of the marriage. The sculptor confronts a heap of clay, imagines a pleasing form, and sets about creating a structure. The sculptor may create several approximations before creating one that will work

This NebGuide presents steps to follow to recognize and resolve marital conflicts through negotiation and finding mutually agreeable alternatives. Do you ever use extreme or irrational tactics to gain your point (slamming doors, stomping around)? Do you sometimes hurt your spouse in order to have the last word (sarcasm, name-calling)? Do you store up grudges and use them to hit your partner over the head at a later time (revenge)? Is your attitude If I don\u27t get what I want, I will quit cooperating? Do you continually expect others to do things the right way (your way)? If you answered YES to any of the above, you are not fighting fair, and are creating an interaction pattern of I win, you lose. If continued over a period of time, you will be setting into motion a hurtful, destructive method of responding to differences and resolving disagreements
