An evaluation of DIADEM assisted online form completion
The DIADEM project aims to develop a web-based application in the form of an Expert System (ES) to assist cognitively impaired older-adult users in the task of interacting with and completing online transactions. Having recently developed the first experimental version of the application, this study reports on the preliminary findings of user trials carried out in three European countries top evaluate this early version of the application. Of the 94 users that took part in the trials, 77 were identified as users that were likely to present with some degree of mild cognitive impairment, and thus were included in the analysis stage. The key findings of the study indicate that users of DIADEM assisted form filling seemed report comparatively high-levels of satisfaction, particularly when considered against what is considered a typical level of satisfaction for this user group. Furthermore, as a result of a statistical analysis, the application appears to provide significantly increased levels of assistance for users presenting with higher levels of cognitive impairments, and therefore achieves its goal of catering for this particular target user group
Transformational government and assistive web base technologies
Transformational government has been on the European agenda for several years. However, progress towards realising the full potential of ICT to transform public services for older adults with age related cognitive impairments has been very limited. Highlighting such limitations this paper demonstrates how assistive web base technologies can be developed to improve the public services for older adults with age related cognitive impairments. However the paper argues that these transformations can be obstructed if there is no strong leadership and political commitment from people at many levels in public sectors and governments
Family-inclusive practice in a psychiatric intensive care unit
Aims and Method: The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommends involving the families of patients admitted to psychiatric hospital care, without specific guidance on how to do it. To improve family involvement in a National Health Service psychiatric intensive care unit, a relatives’ and carers’ clinic was set up. Fifty family members attended and completed questionnaires. Nine went on to take part in interviews, the results of which were analysed using thematic analysis.
Results: Families felt more informed and found the increased access to information useful. They felt that the process showed respect for them and their family member, and that their contribution was valued. Running throughout the interviews was the contrast with previous experiences; families reported feeling heard and understood and attributed this in part to timing and environment.
Clinical implications: The clinic was viewed positively by families and met the trust’s commitment to including carers, as well as national guidance which suggests it should be part of routine practice
Dielectric and polarization experiments in high loss dielectrics: a word of caution
The recent quest for improved functional materials like high permittivity
dielectrics and/or multiferroics has triggered an intense wave of research.
Many materials have been checked for their dielectric permittivity or their
polarization state. In this report, we call for caution when samples are
simultaneously displaying insulating behavior and defect-related conductivity.
Many oxides containing mixed valent cations or oxygen vacancies fall in this
category. In such cases, most of standard experiments may result in effective
high dielectric permittivity which cannot be related to ferroelectric
polarization. Here we list few examples of possible discrepancies between
measured parameters and their expected microscopic origin
Elastic effects of vacancies in strontium titanate: Short- and long-range strain fields, elastic dipole tensors, and chemical strain
We present a study of the local strain effects associated with vacancy
defects in strontium titanate and report the first calculations of elastic
dipole tensors and chemical strains for point defects in perovskites. The
combination of local and long-range results will enable determination of x-ray
scattering signatures that can be compared with experiments. We find that the
oxygen vacancy possesses a special property -- a highly anisotropic elastic
dipole tensor which almost vanishes upon averaging over all possible defect
orientations. Moreover, through direct comparison with experimental
measurements of chemical strain, we place constraints on the possible defects
present in oxygen-poor strontium titanate and introduce a conjecture regarding
the nature of the predominant defect in strontium-poor stoichiometries in
samples grown via pulsed laser deposition. Finally, during the review process,
we learned of recent experimental data, from strontium titanate films deposited
via molecular-beam epitaxy, that show good agreement with our calculated value
of the chemical strain associated with strontium vacancies.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 4 table
Low-temperature phase transformations of PZT in the morphotropic phase-boundary region
We present anelastic and dielectric spectroscopy measurements of
PbZr(1-x)Ti(x)O(3) with 0.455 < x < 0.53, which provide new information on the
low temperature phase transitions. The tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation
is first-order for x < 0.48 and causes a softening of the polycrystal Young's
modulus whose amplitude may exceed the one at the cubic-to-tetragonal
transformation; this is explainable in terms of linear coupling between shear
strain components and tilting angle of polarization in the monoclinic phase.
The transition involving rotations of the octahedra below 200 K is visible both
in the dielectric and anelastic losses, and it extends within the tetragonal
phase, as predicted by recent first-principle calculations.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Revised structural phase diagram of (Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3)-(BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3)
The temperature-composition phase diagram of barium calcium titanate zirconate (x(Ba0.7Ca0.3TiO3)(1-x)(BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3); BCTZ) has been reinvestigated using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. Contrary to previous reports of an unusual rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition in this system, we have observed an intermediate orthorhombic phase, isostructural to that present in the parent phase, BaTiO3, and we identify the previously assigned T-R transition as a T-O transition. We also observe the O-R transition coalescing with the previously observed triple point, forming a phase convergence region. The implication of the orthorhombic phase in reconciling the exceptional piezoelectric properties with the surrounding phase diagram is discussed
Room-temperature ferromagnetism in Sr_(1-x)Y_xCoO_(3-delta) (0.2 < x < 0.25)
We have measured magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of
SrYCoO ( 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.215, 0.225, 0.25, 0.3,
and 0.4), and have found that SrYCoO is a room
temperature ferromagnet with a Curie temperature of 335 K in a narrow
compositional range of 0.2 0.25. This is the highest transition
temperature among perovskite Co oxides. The saturation magnetization for
0.225 is 0.25 /Co at 10 K, which implies that the observed
ferromagnetism is a bulk effect. We attribute this ferromagnetism to a peculiar
Sr/Y ordering.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
First-principles study of the electrooptic effect in ferroelectric oxides
We present a method to compute the electrooptic tensor from first principles,
explicitly taking into account the electronic, ionic and piezoelectric
contributions. It allows us to study the non-linear optic behavior of three
ferroelectric ABO_3 compounds : LiNbO_3, BaTiO_3 and PbTiO_3. Our calculations
reveal the dominant contribution of the soft mode to the electrooptic
coefficients in LiNbO_3 and BaTiO_3 and identify the coupling between the
electric field and the polar atomic displacements along the B-O chains as the
origin of the large electrooptic response in these compounds.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Giant Flexoelectric Effect in Ferroelectric Epitaxial Thin Films
We report on nanoscale strain gradients in ferroelectric HoMnO3 epitaxial
thin films, resulting in a giant flexoelectric effect. Using grazing-incidence
in-plane X-ray diffraction, we measured strain gradients in the films, which
were 6 or 7 orders of magnitude larger than typical values reported for bulk
oxides. The combination of transmission electron microscopy, electrical
measurements, and electrostatic calculations showed that flexoelectricity
provides a means of tuning the physical properties of ferroelectric epitaxial
thin films, such as domain configurations and hysteresis curves.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
