Modest Dress at Work as Lived Religion: Women’s Dress in Religious Work Contexts in Saudi Arabia and the UK

This article explores how women in religious workplaces respond to organizational norms of and requirements for modest dress and behavior, both implicit and explicit. It compares two case studies: women working for faith-based organizations (FBOs) in the UK, and women working for secular organizations who travel for work to Saudi Arabia, where the state requirement to dress modesty meant wearing an abaya (slightly relaxed in 2019). Data come from semi-structured interviews with 43 women: 21 who travelled from the UK to Saudi Arabia and 22 who work in UK FBOs. It examines three themes: how women adapt to forms of modest dress, how they navigate dress regulation, and how they negotiate habitus and authenticity. The article proposes that women’s modest dress in workplaces governed by religious codes be understood as a form of lived religious practice and one that raises dilemmas of habitus and authenticity

Among several V. O. problems, beyond the wearing of a scarf at school, above all there are dispensations for religious reasons implying that the expression of religious belonging is at stake for the secular tradition of the country. In England, beyond the state financing Muslim schools, the question concerns above all the content of religious teaching and the systematic claims for a better consideration of the religious needs in the British educational system.L’auteure traite des questions posées par l’expression de l’appartenance religieuse à l’école, avec une attention particulière aux élèves musulmans scolarisés à l’école publique en France et en Angleterre. Parmi plusieurs problèmes en France, au-delà du port des foulards à l’école, figurent surtout les dérogations pour des raisons religieuses, qui font de l’expression de l’appartenance religieuse un enjeu pour la tradition laïque du pays. En Angleterre, au-delà du financement étatique des écoles musulmanes, il s’agit surtout des conflits sur le contenu de l’enseignement religieux et les demandes systématiques d’une meilleure prise en compte des besoins religieux dans le système éducatif anglais.La expresión de las convicciones religiosas en el colegio en francia y en inglaterra. La autora trata de las cuestiones planteadas por la expresión de las convicciones religiosas en el colegio, prestando especial atención a los alumnos musulmanes escolarizados en la escuela pública en Francia y en Inglaterra. Entre varios problemas en Francia, allende el hecho de llevar el velo en el cole, figuran sobre todo las derogaciones por razones religiosas, lo que hace que la expresión de las convicciones religiosas presente un reto para la tradición laica del país.
