    Is Argument Structure of Learner Chinese Understandable: A Corpus-Based Analysis

    This paper presents a corpus-based analysis of argument structure errors in learner Chinese. The data for analysis includes sentences produced by language learners as well as their corrections by native speakers. We couple the data with semantic role labeling annotations that are manually created by two senior students whose majors are both Applied Linguistics. The annotation procedure is guided by the Chinese PropBank specification, which is originally developed to cover first language phenomena. Nevertheless, we find that it is quite comprehensive for handling second language phenomena. The inter-annotator agreement is rather high, suggesting the understandability of learner texts to native speakers. Based on our annotations, we present a preliminary analysis of competence errors related to argument structure. In particular, speech errors related to word order, word selection, lack of proposition, and argument-adjunct confounding are discussed.Comment: Proceedings of the 2018 International Conference on Bilingual Learning and Teaching (ICBLT-2018

    Triterpenic Acids Present in Hawthorn Lower Plasma Cholesterol by Inhibiting Intestinal ACAT Activity in Hamsters

    Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) is an edible fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine to lower plasma lipids. This study explored lipid-lowering compounds and underlying mechanisms of action of hawthorn. Hawthorn powder extracts inhibited acylCoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity in Caco-2 cells. The inhibitory activity was positively associated with triterpenic acid (i.e., oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA)) contents in the extracts. Cholesterol lowering effects of hawthorn and its potential additive effect in combination with plant sterol esters (PSE) were further studied in hamsters. Animals were fed a semi-synthetic diet containing 0.08% (w/w) cholesterol (control) or the same diet supplemented with (i) 0.37% hawthorn dichloromethane extract, (ii) 0.24% PSE, (iii) hawthorn dichloromethane extract (0.37%) plus PSE (0.24%) or (iv) OA/UA mixture (0.01%) for 4 weeks. Compared to the control diet, hawthorn, PSE, hawthorn plus PSE and OA/UA significantly lowered plasma non-HDL (VLDL + LDL) cholesterol concentrations by 8%, 9%, 21% and 6% and decreased hepatic cholesterol ester content by 9%, 23%, 46% and 22%, respectively. The cholesterol lowering effects of these ingredients were conversely associated with their capacities in increasing fecal neutral sterol excretion. In conclusion, OA and UA are responsible for the cholesterol lowering effect of hawthorn by inhibiting intestinal ACAT activity.     Full-State Linearization and Stabilization of SISO Markovian Jump Nonlinear Systems

    This paper investigates the linearization and stabilizing control design problems for a class of SISO Markovian jump nonlinear systems. According to the proposed relative degree set definition, the system can be transformed into the canonical form through the appropriate coordinate changes followed with the Markovian switchings; that is, the system can be full-state linearized in every jump mode with respect to the relative degree set n,…,n. Then, a stabilizing control is designed through applying the backstepping technique, which guarantees the asymptotic stability of Markovian jump nonlinear systems.     Obesity and acute type A aortic dissection: unraveling surgical outcomes through the lens of the upper hemisternotomy approach

    BackgroundAcute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a pressing cardiovascular emergency necessitating prompt surgical intervention. Obesity, a pervasive health concern, has been identified as a significant risk factor for ATAAD, introducing unique surgical challenges that can influence postoperative outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of ATAAD surgery across various body mass index (BMI) categories, focusing on the implications of the upper hemisternotomy (UHS) approach.MethodsBetween April 2017 and October 2023, 229 patients diagnosed with ATAAD underwent aortic arch intervention via UHS at the General Hospital of Northern Theater Command. Based on BMI (WS/T 428-2013), patients were categorized into normal weight, overweight, and obese. The primary outcomes included perioperative parameters, intraoperative details, and postoperative complications, with specific emphasis on hypoxemia, defined by the Berlin criteria as a PaO2/FiO2 ratio of ≤300 mmHg.ResultsThe average age of the cohort was 50.1 ± 11.2 years with a male predominance (174 males). Preoperatively, 49.0% presented with hypoxemia, with the Obese group exhibiting a significantly elevated rate (77.9%, P < 0.001). Postoperatively, while the Normal group demonstrated a lower thoracic drainage volume 24 h post-surgery [180.0 (140.0) ml; P < 0.001], the Obese group indicated prolonged durations for mechanical ventilation and ICU stay, without statistical significance. Unlike the Normal and Overweight groups, the Obese group showed no notable changes in pre- and postoperative PaO2/FiO2 ratio. No significant difference was observed in severe postoperative complications among the groups. Further ROC curve analysis identifies a BMI cutoff of 25.5 for predicting postoperative hypoxemia, with 76.3% sensitivity and 84.4% specificity. And multivariate analysis reveals BMI and preoperative hypoxemia as independent predictors of postoperative hypoxemia.ConclusionObesity, although presenting unique challenges in ATAAD interventions, does not necessarily portend adverse outcomes when managed with meticulous surgical planning and postoperative care. The study emphasizes the significance of individualized patient assessment and tailoring surgical strategies, suggesting the potential of UHS in addressing the surgical intricacies posed by obesity in ATAAD patients. Further research is warranted to consolidate these findings

    ETV4 and ETV5 drive synovial sarcoma through cell cycle and DUX4 embryonic pathway control

    Synovial sarcoma is an aggressive malignancy with no effective treatments for patients with metastasis. The synovial sarcoma fusion SS18-SSX, which recruits the SWI/SNF-BAF chromatin remodeling and polycomb repressive complexes, results in epigenetic activation of FGF receptor (FGFR) signaling. In genetic FGFR-knockout models, culture, and xenograft synovial sarcoma models treated with the FGFR inhibitor BGJ398, we show that FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3 were crucial for tumor growth. Transcriptome analyses of BGJ398-treated cells and histological and expression analyses of mouse and human synovial sarcoma tumors revealed prevalent expression of two ETS factors and FGFR targets, ETV4 and ETV5. We further demonstrate that ETV4 and ETV5 acted as drivers of synovial sarcoma growth, most likely through control of the cell cycle. Upon ETV4 and ETV5 knockdown, we observed a striking upregulation of DUX4 and its transcriptional targets that activate the zygotic genome and drive the atrophy program in facioscapulohumeral dystrophy patients. In addition to demonstrating the importance of inhibiting all three FGFRs, the current findings reveal potential nodes of attack for the cancer with the discovery of ETV4 and ETV5 as appropriate biomarkers and molecular targets, and activation of the embryonic DUX4 pathway as a promising approach to block synovial sarcoma tumors
