    Text detection and recognition based on a lensless imaging system

    Lensless cameras are characterized by several advantages (e.g., miniaturization, ease of manufacture, and low cost) as compared with conventional cameras. However, they have not been extensively employed due to their poor image clarity and low image resolution, especially for tasks that have high requirements on image quality and details such as text detection and text recognition. To address the problem, a framework of deep-learning-based pipeline structure was built to recognize text with three steps from raw data captured by employing lensless cameras. This pipeline structure consisted of the lensless imaging model U-Net, the text detection model connectionist text proposal network (CTPN), and the text recognition model convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN). Compared with the method focusing only on image reconstruction, UNet in the pipeline was able to supplement the imaging details by enhancing factors related to character categories in the reconstruction process, so the textual information can be more effectively detected and recognized by CTPN and CRNN with fewer artifacts and high-clarity reconstructed lensless images. By performing experiments on datasets of different complexities, the applicability to text detection and recognition on lensless cameras was verified. This study reasonably demonstrates text detection and recognition tasks in the lensless camera system,and develops a basic method for novel applications

    Identification of Pharmacokinetic Markers for Guanxin Danshen Drop Pills in Rats by Combination of Pharmacokinetics, Systems Pharmacology, and Pharmacodynamic Assays

    This paper reported a feasibility study strategy of identifying pharmacokinetic (PK) markers for a cardiovascular herbal medicine, Guanxin Danshen drop pill (GDDP). First, quantification analysis revealed the constituent composition in the preparation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Subsequently, physiochemical property calculation predicted the solubility and intestinal permeability of the constituents in the preparation. Furthermore, HPLC–MS analysis ascertained the absorbable ingredients and their PK properties in rat plasma. The main effective substances from the ingredients absorbed into blood and their cardiovascular effects were also predicted by systems pharmacology study, and were further confirmed by in vivo protective effects on isoprenaline-induced myocardial injury in mice. Finally, the ingredients with high content, representative structure feature, favorable PK properties, high relevant degree to myocardial ischemia (MI) issues, and validated therapeutic effects were considered as the PK markers for the preparation. Ginsenosides Rg1, Rb1, and tanshinone (TS) IIA were identified originally as PK markers for representing PK properties of GDDP. In addition, integrated PK studies were carried out according to previous reports, viz. drug concentration sum method and the AUC weighting method, to understand the in vivo process of GDDP comprehensively. The present study maybe provide a reference approach to identify PK markers for cardiovascular herbal medicines

    Tissue-specific patterns of gene expression in the epithelium and stroma of normal colon in healthy individuals in an aspirin intervention trial

    AbstractRegular aspirin use reduces colon adenoma and carcinoma incidence. UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT) are involved in aspirin metabolism and clearance, and variant alleles in UGT1A6 have been shown to alter salicylic acid metabolism and risk of colon neoplasia. In a randomized, cross-over, placebo-controlled trial of 44 healthy men and women, homozygous for UGT1A6*1 or UGT1A6*2, we explored differences between global epithelial and stromal expression, using Affymetrix U133+2.0 microarrays and tested effects of 60-day aspirin supplementation (325mg/d) on epithelial and stromal gene expression and colon prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. We conducted a comprehensive study of differential gene expression between normal human colonic epithelium and stroma from healthy individuals. Although no statistically significant differences in gene expression were observed in response to aspirin or UGT1A6 genotype, we have identified the genes uniquely and reproducibly expressed in each tissue type and have analyzed the biologic processes they represent.     Malignancy‐associated ischemic stroke : implications for diagnostic and therapeutic workup

    Background: Patients with malignancies have an increased risk of suffering ischemic stroke via several mechanisms such as coagulation dysfunction and other malignancy-related effects as well as iatrogenic causes. Moreover, stroke can be the first sign of an occult malignancy, termed as malignancy-associated ischemic stroke (MAS). Therefore, timely diagnostic assessment and targeted management of this complex clinical situation are critical. Findings: Patients with both stroke and malignancy have atypical ages, risk factors, and often exhibit malignancy-related symptoms and multiple lesions on neuroimaging. New biomarkers such as eicosapentaenoic acid and blood mRNA profiles may help in distinguishing MAS from other strokes. In terms of treatment, malignancy should not be considered a contraindication, given comparable rates of recanalization and complications between stroke patients with or without malignancies. Conclusion: In this review, we summarize the latest developments in diagnosing and managing MAS, especially stroke with occult malignancies, and provide new recommendations from recently emerged clinical evidence for diagnostic and therapeutic workup strategies

    Independent Association of Serum Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 Levels With Impaired Liver Enzymes in Hyperthyroid Patients

    Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is identified as a potential biomarker for liver diseases. However, information is limited regarding serum FGF21 and impaired liver function in hyperthyroidism. We aim to determine the potential association of serum FGF21 levels with impaired liver enzymes in hyperthyroid patients. In this case-control study, 105 normal subjects and 122 overt hyperthyroid patients were included. Among them, 41 hyperthyroid patients who obtained euthyroid status after thionamide treatment received second visit. Serum FGF21 levels were determined using the ELISA method. Compared to the normal subjects, patients with hyperthyroidism had significantly elevated serum liver enzymes, including alanine transaminase (ALT) (p < 0.001), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (p < 0.001) levels, as well as FGF21 levels (p < 0.001). Further analysis showed serum FGF21 (p < 0.05), as well as thyroid hormone (TH) free T3 (p < 0.05), free T4 (p < 0.05) levels were higher in hyperthyroid patients with impaired liver enzymes than in those with normal liver enzymes. After reversal of hyperthyroid state, elevated serum FGF21 levels in hyperthyroid patients declined significantly (p < 0.001), with a concomitant decrease in serum ALT (p < 0.001), AST (p < 0.001) levels. Correlation analysis showed close correlation between FGF21 and ALT (p < 0.002), AST (p < 0.012), free T3 (p < 0.001), free T4 (p < 0.001). Further logistic regression analysis revealed FGF21 is significantly associated with elevated ALT [Odds Ratio, OR 1.79, (95% confidence interval, CI), (1.30–2.47), P < 0.001], AST [1.59 (1.07–2.34), p < 0.020]. After adjustment of potential confounders, the association between FGF21 and elevated ALT remained significant [1.42 (1.01–1.99), p < 0.043]. In conclusion, serum FGF21 is independently associated with impaired liver enzymes in hyperthyroid patients

    The Development of Professional Empowerment Program for Principals by Interorganizational Collaboration and Action Research

    As an action research approach through interorganizational collaboration, this study aims to develop an effective professional learning program for enhancing principals’ leadership. There are three phases in this research: program design, implementation, and feedback and reflection. With a comprehensive literature review and focus group interviews, key competences of leadership were identified. The program contents were designed through interorganizational collaboration between academics, local officers, experienced principals, and NGO practitioners. The program contains self-awareness and team building in the dark, leading for the future, curriculum and instructional leadership, systems thinking, Understanding by Design, framework and practice, and World CafĂ© dialogue. In Phase II, a four-day workshop program has been held twice in the summer of 2012. Learning feedback was posted on Facebook as informal formative evaluation during the implementation phase. In phase III, opinions and feedbacks from learners, external observers, and curriculum designers were collected to assess the effectiveness of the program. The challenges and revision ideas were proposed at the end of the paper. Through the cycle of “design-act-feedback-revision” of action research with interorganizational collaboration, the present professional development program for principals can be refined and better empower school leaders with new ways of situated learning, collaboration, and reflective thinking. Although this program has been implemented for a few times in the past two years, this paper only explained and discussed the merits and effects of the workshops implemented in the summer of 2012
