    Kolmogorov Dispersion for Turbulence in Porous Media: A Conjecture

    Full text link
    We will utilise the self-avoiding walk (SAW) mapping of the vortex line conformations in turbulence to get the Kolmogorov scale dependence of energy dispersion from SAW statistics, and the knowledge of the disordered fractal geometries on the SAW statistics. These will give us the Kolmogorov energy dispersion exponent value for turbulence in porous media in terms of the size exponent for polymers in the same. We argue that the exponent value will be somewhat less than 5/3 for turbulence in porous media.Comment: 3 page

    Low-temperature halo-carbon homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC

    New halo-carbon precursor, CH3Cl, is used in this work to replace the traditional C3H8 gas as a carbon precursor for the homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC. The traditional SiH4-C3H8-H2 systems require high growth temperatures to enable the desirable steplow growth for high-quality epilayers. A well known problem of the regular-temperature growth is the homogeneous gas-phase nucleation caused by SiH4 decomposition. However, the degree of Si cluster formation in the gas phase and its influence on our low-temperature epitaxial growth was unknown prior to this work. Growth at temperatures below 1400°C was demonstrated previously only for a limited range of substrate surface orientations and with poor quality. Mirror-like epilayer surface without foreign polytype inclusions and with rare surface defects was demonstrated at temperatures down to 1280-1300°C for our halo-carbon growth. Quantitatively different growth-rate dependences on the carbon-precursor flow rate suggested different precursor decomposition kinetics and different surface reactions in CH3Cl and C3H8 systems. Photoluminescence measurement indicated the high quality of the epilayers grown at 1300°C. A mirror-like surface morphology with rare surface defects was demonstrated for the growth on low off-axis substrates at 1380°C. The most critical growth-rate limiting mechanism during the low-temperature epitaxial growth is the formation of Si clusters, which depleted the Si supply to the growth surface, in the gas phase. Presence of chlorine in the CH3Cl precursor significantly reduces but does not completely eliminate this problem. The addition of HCl during growths improved the growth rate and surface morphology drastically but also brought up some complex results, suggesting more complex mechanisms of HCl interaction with the gas-phase clusters. These complicated results were explained partly by an additional mechanism of precursor depletion enhanced in presence of HCl. Complex changes in the effective silicon to carbon ratio in the growth zone indicated that the supply of carbon species may also be enhanced at least at low HCl flow rates. This fact allowed us to suggest that the gas-phase clusters may contain a significant amount of carbon. The new model assuming coexistence of the silicon and carbon in the gas-phase clusters enabled the explanation of the complex experimental trends reported in this work

    Adjacent Graph Based Vulnerability Assessment for Electrical Networks Considering Fault Adjacent Relationships Among Branches

    Get PDF
    Security issues related to vulnerability assessment in electrical networks are necessary for operators to identify the critical branches. At present, using complex network theory to assess the structural vulnerability of the electrical network is a popular method. However, the complex network theory cannot be comprehensively applicable to the operational vulnerability assessment of the electrical network because the network operation is closely dependent on the physical rules not only on the topological structure. To overcome the problem, an adjacent graph (AG) considering the topological, physical, and operational features of the electrical network is constructed to replace the original network. Through the AG, a branch importance index that considers both the importance of a branch and the fault adjacent relationships among branches is constructed to evaluate the electrical network vulnerability. The IEEE 118-bus system and the French grid are employed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant U1734202National Key Research and Development Plan of China under Grant 2017YFB1200802-12National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 51877181National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 61703345Chinese Academy of Sciences, under Grant 2018-2019-0

    First-order magnetic and structural phase transitions in Fe1+y_{1+y}Sex_xTe1−x_{1-x}

    Full text link
    We use bulk magnetic susceptibility, electronic specific heat, and neutron scattering to study structural and magnetic phase transitions in Fe1+y_{1+y}Se% x_xTe1−x_{1-x}. Fe1.068_{1.068}Te exhibits a first order phase transition near 67 K with a tetragonal to monoclinic structural transition and simultaneously develops a collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order responsible for the entropy change across the transition. Systematic studies of FeSe%_{1-x}Tex_x system reveal that the AF structure and lattice distortion in these materials are different from those of FeAs-based pnictides. These results call into question the conclusions of present density functional calculations, where FeSe1−x_{1-x}Tex_x and FeAs-based pnictides are expected to have similar Fermi surfaces and therefore the same spin-density-wave AF order.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    The development of non-coding RNA ontology

    Get PDF
    Identification of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) has been significantly improved over the past decade. On the other hand, semantic annotation of ncRNA data is facing critical challenges due to the lack of a comprehensive ontology to serve as common data elements and data exchange standards in the field. We developed the Non-Coding RNA Ontology (NCRO) to handle this situation. By providing a formally defined ncRNA controlled vocabulary, the NCRO aims to fill a specific and highly needed niche in semantic annotation of large amounts of ncRNA biological and clinical data
