    Joint Subcarrier Pairing and Power Allocation for OFDM Transmission with Decode-and-Forward Relaying

    In this paper, a point-to-point Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system with a decode-and-forward (DF) relay is considered. The transmission consists of two hops. The source transmits in the first hop, and the relay transmits in the second hop. Each hop occupies one time slot. The relay is half-duplex, and capable of decoding the message on a particular subcarrier in one time slot, and re-encoding and forwarding it on a different subcarrier in the next time slot. Thus each message is transmitted on a pair of subcarriers in two hops. It is assumed that the destination is capable of combining the signals from the source and the relay pertaining to the same message. The goal is to maximize the weighted sum rate of the system by jointly optimizing subcarrier pairing and power allocation on each subcarrier in each hop. The weighting of the rates is to take into account the fact that different subcarriers may carry signals for different services. Both total and individual power constraints for the source and the relay are investigated. For the situations where the relay does not transmit on some subcarriers because doing so does not improve the weighted sum rate, we further allow the source to transmit new messages on these idle subcarriers. To the best of our knowledge, such a joint optimization inclusive of the destination combining has not been discussed in the literature. The problem is first formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. It is then transformed to a convex optimization problem by continuous relaxation, and solved in the dual domain. Based on the optimization results, algorithms to achieve feasible solutions are also proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms almost achieve the optimal weighted sum rate, and outperform the existing methods in various channel conditions.Comment: 33 pages, 11 figure

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Acute exposure of ethanol (alcohol) inhibits NMDA receptor function. Our previous study showed that acute ethanol inhibited the pressor responses induced by NMDA applied intrathecally; however, prolonged ethanol exposure may increase the levels of phosphorylated NMDA receptor subunits leading to changes in ethanol inhibitory potency on NMDA-induced responses. The present study was carried out to examine whether acute ethanol exposure influences the effects of ketamine, a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist, on spinal NMDA-induced pressor responses.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The blood pressure responses induced by intrathecal injection of NMDA were recorded in urethane-anesthetized rats weighing 250-275 g. The levels of several phosphorylated residues on NMDA receptor GluN1 subunits were determined by western blot analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Intravenous injection of ethanol or ketamine inhibited spinal NMDA-induced pressor responses in a dose-dependent and reversible manner. Ketamine inhibition of NMDA-induced responses was synergistically potentiated by ethanol when ethanol was applied just before ketamine. However, ketamine inhibition was significantly reduced when applied at 10 min after ethanol administration. Western blot analysis showed that intravenous ethanol increased the levels of phosphoserine 897 on GluN1 subunits (pGluN1-serine 897), selectively phosphorylated by protein kinase A (PKA), in the lateral horn regions of spinal cord at 10 min after administration. Intrathecal administration of cAMPS-Sp, a PKA activator, at doses elevating the levels of pGluN1-serine 897, significantly blocked ketamine inhibition of spinal NMDA-induced responses.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The results suggest that ethanol may differentially regulate ketamine inhibition of spinal NMDA receptor function depending on ethanol exposure time and the resulting changes in the levels of pGluN1-serine 897.</p

    Set voltage distribution stabilized by constructing an oxygen reservoir in resistive random access memory

    In this letter, the instability mechanism of RRAM was investigated, and a technique was developed to stabilize the distribution of high resistance state (HRS) and better concentrate the SET voltage. In previous research, we found that an interface-type switching characteristic was observed on the I-V curve beneath the filament-type switching behavior, owing to the oxygen accumulation effect. In this letter, this interface-type switching characteristic is used to fit the natural distribution of HRS for an analysis of the instability mechanism. According to the results, the reason for the HRS distribution is the accumulation of extra oxygen ions which are left over from a lower degree of oxygen and oxygen vacancy recombination during the reset process. We propose a solution which creates an extra oxygen reservoir by changing the surface topography of the electrode to store the surplus oxygen ions from the reset process, eliminating the accumulation effect, and indeed improving stability.     Possible Manifestation of a Non-Pointness of the Electron in e+ee^+e^- Annihilation Reaction at Centre of Mass Energies 55-207 GeV

    The experimental data from VENUS, TOPAS, OPAL, DELPHI, ALEPH and L3 collaborations, collected from 1989 to 2003, are applied to study the QED framework through direct contact interaction terms approach, using the annihilation reaction e+eγγ(γ)\rm e^+ e^-\rightarrow \gamma\gamma(\gamma). The analysis involves performing of a χ2\chi^{2} test to detect the presence of an excited electron ee^{*} and evidence of non-point like behavior in the e+ee^+e^- annihilation zone. The results of the analysis indicate a strong signal, with a confidence level of approximately 5σ5\sigma, for the presence of an excited electron with a mass of 308±14308\pm 14 GeV, and a deviation from a point-like behavior of the charge distribution of the electron. The radius of this deviation is 1.57±0.07×10171.57\pm0.07\times 10^{-17} cm, which can be interpreted as the size of the electron.Comment: 47 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables. The revised versio

    Edge-Termination and Core-Modification Effects of Hexagonal Nanosheet Graphene

    [[abstract]]Optimized geometries and electronic structures of two different hexagonal grapheme nanosheets (HGNSs), with armchair (n-A-HGNS, n = 3–11) and zigzag (n-Z-HGNS, n = 1–8) edges have been calculated by using the GGA/PBE method implemented in the SIESTA package, with the DZP basis set, where n represents the number of peripheral rings. The computed HOMO-LUMO energy gap (Eg = ELUMO − EHOMO) decreases for fully H-terminated A- and Z-HGNSs with increasing n, i.e., with increasing nanosheet size and pπ-orbitals being widely delocalized over the sheet surface. The full terminations, calculated with various functional groups, including the electron-withdrawing (F-, Cl-, and CN-) and -donating (OH-, and SH-) substitutions, were addressed. Significant lowering of EHOMO and ELUMO was obtained for CN-terminated HGNS as compared to those for H-terminated ones due to the mesomeric effect. The calculated Eg value decreases with increasing n for all terminations, whereby for the SH-termination in HGNS, the termination effect becomes less significant with increasing n. Further, the calculation results for stabilities of HGNS oxides support the tendency toward the oxidative reactivity at the edge site of the sheet, which shows most pronounced C-C bond length alternation, by chemical modification. Physical properties of HGNSs with various numbers of the core-defects, which can be obtained by strong oxidation, were also investigated. Their structures can change drastically from planar to saddle-like shapes.     Epidemiology of acute otitis media among young children: A multiple database study in Taiwan

    Background/PurposeAcute otitis media (AOM) is a common complication of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) among children. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the epidemiology of AOM among young children in Taiwan, including the age incidence and seasonality by combining multiple databases.MethodsTwo country-based questionnaire survey studies had been conducted to evaluate the experience of otitis media (OM) among young children: one in 2007 and the other between 2005 and 2010. The number of OM cases (5% of population younger than 7 years) in 2005 and annual visiting rates for URTI from 2005 to 2010 obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan were collected and comprised the third database. The fourth database comprised ambulatory visits of children with OM to a medical center in central Taiwan between 2005 and 2010.ResultsData from a total of 1099 questionnaires were entered into Database I in 2007, and data from 9705 questionnaires between 2005 and 2010 comprised Database II. There were 86,702 children (younger than 7 years, representing 5% of the whole population for this age group) retrieved from Database III in 2007, and 5,904 cases of OM in children between 2005 and 2010 in a hospital. In Database I, 7.46% children experienced at least one episode of AOM compared with 9.21% in Database II for children aged 5 years and younger. In Database III, 13.2% children younger than 7 years had AOM in 2005. The peak season of AOM among children was from March to May (Databases III and IV).ConclusionAOM was thought to be a very common disease among children; however, this comparative analysis showed that the overall prevalence of AOM among children younger than 5 years was only 20%, much lower than in other countries. AOM was more prevalent during the spring season, and still was similarly common after age 2 years

    Inhibition of gap junctional Intercellular communication in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells by triphenyltin chloride through MAPK and PI3-kinase pathways

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Organotin compounds (OTCs) have been widely used as stabilizers in the production of plastic, agricultural pesticides, antifoulant plaints and wood preservation. The toxicity of triphenyltin (TPT) compounds was known for their embryotoxic, neurotoxic, genotoxic and immunotoxic effects in mammals. The carcinogenicity of TPT was not well understood and few studies had discussed the effects of OTCs on gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) of cells.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>In the present study, the effects of triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) on GJIC in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells were evaluated, using the scrape-loading dye transfer technique.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>TPTC inhibited GJIC after a 30-min exposure in a concentration- and time-dependent manner. Pre-incubation of cells with the protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor did not modify the response, but the specific MEK 1 inhibitor PD98059 and PI3K inhibitor LY294002 decreased substantially the inhibition of GJIC by TPTC. After WB-F344 cells were exposed to TPTC, phosphorylation of Cx43 increased as seen in Western blot analysis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These results show that TPTC inhibits GJIC in WB-F344 rat liver epithelial cells by altering the Cx43 protein expression through both MAPK and PI3-kinase pathways.</p
