Bootstrapping 2D CFTs in the Semiclassical Limit

    Get PDF
We study two dimensional conformal field theories in the semiclassical limit. In this limit, the four-point function is dominated by intermediate primaries of particular weights along with their descendants, and the crossing equations simplify drastically. For a four-point function receiving sufficiently small contributions from the light primaries, the structure constants involving heavy primaries follow a universal formula. Applying our results to the four-point function of the Z2\mathbb Z_2 twist field in the symmetric product orbifold, we produce the Hellerman bound and the logarithmically corrected Cardy formula that is valid for hā‰„c/12h \geq c/12.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures. v2, v3: references added, minor clarification

Carving Out the End of the World or (Superconformal Bootstrap in Six Dimensions)

    Get PDF
We bootstrap N=(1,0){\cal N}=(1,0) superconformal field theories in six dimensions, by analyzing the four-point function of flavor current multiplets. Assuming E8E_8 flavor group, we present universal bounds on the central charge CTC_T and the flavor central charge CJC_J. Based on the numerical data, we conjecture that the rank-one E-string theory saturates the universal lower bound on CJC_J, and numerically determine the spectrum of long multiplets in the rank-one E-string theory. We comment on the possibility of solving the higher-rank E-string theories by bootstrap and thereby probing M-theory on AdS7ƗS4{}_7\times{\rm S}^4/Z2\mathbb{Z}_2.Comment: 59 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables; v2-v5: typos corrected, references adde

Threshold Effects in Cigarette Addiction: An Application of the Threshold Model in Dynamic Panels

    Get PDF
We adopt the threshold model of myopic cigarette addiction to US state-level panel data. The threshold model is used to identify the structural effects of cigarette demand determinants across the income stratification. Furthermore, we apply a bootstrap approach to correct for the small-sample bias that arises in the dynamic panel threshold model with fixed effects. Our empirical results indicate that there exists the heterogeneity of smoking dynamics across consumers.Cigarettes demand, price elasticity, threshold regression model, dynamic panel model, bias correction, bootstrap

Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a maternally inherited mitochondrial disease that primarily affects the optic nerve, causing bilateral vision loss in juveniles and young adults. A 12-year-old boy had complained of blurred vision in both eyes for more than 1 year. His best-corrected visual acuity was 0.08 in the right eye and 0.1 in the left. Ophthalmologic examination showed bilateral optic disc hyperemia and margin blurring, peripapillary telangiectasis, and a relative afferent pupil defect in his right eye. Fluorescein angiography showed no stain or leakage around the optic disc in the late phase. Visual field analysis showed central scotoma in the left eye and a near-total defect in the right. Upon examination of the patient's mitochondrial DNA, a point mutation at nucleotide position 11778 was found, and the diagnosis of LHON was confirmed. Coenzyme Q10 was used to treat the patient

Evaluating Logistics Capabilities on Firm Performance of the Photonics Industry in Taiwan

    Get PDF
This study empirically examined the impact of logistics capabilities on firm performance in the photonics industry. Structural equating modelling (SEM) was employed to test the research hypotheses with the use of data collected from a survey of 221 photonics manufacturing firms in Taiwan. Three dimensions were identified based on a factor analysis, including warehousing capability, information technology capability, and transportation capability. The research findings indicated that logistics capabilities positively influence firm performance. Information technology capability was found to be the most important logistics capability in the photonics industry, followed by warehousing capability, and transportation capability. There is also a discussion of the theoretical and managerial implications for the photonics industry

    Romans Supergravity from Five-Dimensional Holograms

    Get PDF
We study five-dimensional superconformal field theories and their holographic dual, matter-coupled Romans supergravity. On the one hand, some recently derived formulae allow us to extract the central charges from deformations of the supersymmetric five-sphere partition function, whose large N expansion can be computed using matrix model techniques. On the other hand, the conformal and flavor central charges can be extracted from the six-dimensional supergravity action, by carefully analyzing its embedding into type I' string theory. The results match on the two sides of the holographic duality. Our results also provide analytic evidence for the symmetry enhancement in five-dimensional superconformal field theories.Comment: 57 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables; v2: references adde
