Cuerpo extraño en cámara anterior. Presentación de un paciente

The organ of vision is without any doubt among the most important ones in life for the interaction with our environment, being at the same time fragile and delicate. In this article we present a patient with a decrease in the vision of left eye due to ocular trauma. The existence of a foreign body in the anterior chamber was determined; it evolved during a year and remained asymptomatic. This kind of trauma is more frequent in males.El órgano de la visión es, sin dudas, uno de los más importantes en la vida de relación y, a su vez, es frágil y delicado. Le presentamos un paciente con disminución de la visión del ojo izquierdo, secundaria a un trauma ocular, en el que se constató la presencia de un cuerpo extraño en cámara anterior, que evolucionó durante un año y se mantuvo asintomático. En el sexo masculino estos traumas se presentan con mayor frecuencia

Presentación de un paciente con enfermedad de Coats

Coats’ disease is the third most common cause of infant leukocoria. It is more common at the end of the first decade of life and in males, usually unilateral and with no family history. The case of a nine-year-old patient with an advanced stage of the disease is reported. A treatment with peripheral cryotherapy was applied in two sectors. Sector 1: temporal from H3 to H11, and sector 2: inferonasal. A second treatment used laser therapy, applied at the level of the telangiectatic vessels. After two year of follow-up, the patient kept the same visual acuity, there was no retinal detachment, retinal exudates were with no progression and no inherent complications of Coats’ disease have appeared.La enfermedad de Coats es la tercera causa más frecuente de leucocoria infantil, es más usual al final del primer decenio de vida y en varones, normalmente es unilateral y habitualmente no hay antecedentes familiares. Se presenta un paciente de nueve años de edad con la enfermedad en un estadio avanzado, se aplicó como tratamiento crioterapia periférica en dos sectores: sector 1: temporal desde H3 a H11 y sector 2: inferonasal; en un segundo tratamiento se aplicó laserterapia a nivel de los vasos telangiectásicos; a los dos años de seguimiento conservaba igual agudeza visual, no hubo desprendimiento de retina, las exudaciones retinianas eran sin progresión y no han aparecido complicaciones inherentes a la enfermedad de Coats

Particularidades de la inteligencia emocional en estudiantes de Medicina, enfoque de género y cultura

A cross-sectional descriptive relational study was conducted. The universe was formed by 3rd year medical students from the Arnaldo Milian Castro Provincial University Hospital during the 2009-2010 academic year, which coincided with the sample. It was intended to characterize some indicators of emotional intelligence of these students from a gender perspective and geographical origin. Characteristics that could hinder the development of emotional intelligence skills such as high levels of rigidity, extremism and suspicion were identified. Other characteristics that facilitate the development were found, such as high levels of positive thinking, responsibility, high frustration tolerance and high capacity to overcome themselves. The results of different tests were compared using Chi square contrast statistics and Kolmogorov-Smirnov to determine differences in some indicators of emotional intelligence in relation to sex and nationality.Se realizó un estudio descriptivo relacional de corte transversal, como universo de trabajo se utilizaron estudiantes de 3er año de Medicina del Hospital Provincial Universitario “Arnaldo Milián Castro” durante el curso 2009-2010 que coincidió con la muestra. Se pretendió caracterizar algunos indicadores de la inteligencia emocional de estos alumnos desde una perspectiva de género y la procedencia geográfica; se identificaron características que podrían dificultar el desarrollo de las habilidades de la inteligencia emocional como son los altos niveles de rigidez, el extremismo y una gran suspicacia; se encontraron otras facilitadoras como los niveles altos de pensamiento positivo, la responsabilidad, la alta tolerancia a las frustraciones y la alta capacidad de sobreponerse. Se compararon los resultados obtenidos en las diferentes pruebas, empleando los estadísticos de contraste Chi cuadrado y Kolmogorov-Smirnov para determinar diferencias en algunos indicadores de la inteligencia emocional con relación al sexo y la nacionalidad

Resultados de la Cirugía Refractiva en la Provincia de Villa Clara

A descriptive prospective and longitudinal study was conducted in a total of 145 eyes of patients who were seen at the doctor’s office in order to be operated on for a refractive defect. A total of 111 eyes were operated on with LASIK and 34 with LASEK + MC. There was a predominance of females between 20 and 29 years of age. The most common refractive error was compound myopic astigmatism. The visual results to the present are significant because the patients have achieved an uncorrected visual acuity between 20/25 and 20/20. The most common complication found was superficial punctate keratitis. In the case of LASEK, mitomycin C was used in patients with high myopia, and haze has been prevented, thus improving the quality of life of these patients.Se realizó un estudio descriptivo prospectivo y longitudinal en un total de 145 ojos de pacientes que acudieron a consulta para ser operados por algún defecto refractivo. Un total de 111 ojos fueron intervenidos por LASIK y 34 por LASEK+MC. Predominó  el sexo femenino en edades entre 20–29 años. El defecto refractivo más frecuente fue el astigmatismo miópico compuesto, los resultados visuales hasta la fecha son significativos -cuando los aquejados logran una agudeza visual sin corrección entre 20/25 y 20/20-. La complicación más encontrada fue la queratitis punteada superficial. En el caso del LASEK se usó mitomicina C en pacientes con altas miopías y se ha podido evitar el Haze, lo que mejora la calidad de vida de éstos

Resultados de la Cirugía Refractiva en Villa Clara

Objective: to describe the results of refractive surgery in Villa Clara province. Method: a descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted in a total of 145 eyes of patients who were seen at the doctor’s office in order to be operated on for a refractive error. Results: a total of 111 eyes were operated on with LASIK and 34 with LASEK. There was a predominance of female patients between 20 and 29 years of age. The most common refractive error was compound myopic astigmatism. The visual results to the present are significant because the patients have achieved a visual acuity without optical correction between 0.8 and 1.0. Conclusions: the implementation of refractive surgery in Villa Clara has had encouraging results.Objetivo: describir los resultados de la Cirugía Refractiva en la Provincia de Villa Clara. Método: se realizó un estudio descriptivo prospectivo y longitudinal en un total de 145 ojos de pacientes que acudieron a consulta para ser operados por algún defecto refractivo. Resultados: un total de 111 ojos fueron intervenidos por LASIK y 34 por LASEK, predominó el sexo femenino en edades entre 20-29 años, el defecto refractivo más frecuente fue el astigmatismo miópico compuesto, los resultados visuales hasta la fecha son significativos una vez que los pacientes han logrado una agudeza visual sin corrección entre 0.8 y 1.0 y la complicación más encontrada fue la queratitis punteada superficial. Conclusiones: la realización de la intervención quirúrgica refractiva en Villa Clara ha tenido resultados alentadores
