Wine tourism in Brasil: a comparative study of the wine tourist profile in the Vale dos Vinhedos (RS) and Vale do São Fracisco (BA/PE)
Entretanto, as
Wine tourism has become increasingly important for the wine and tourism industries, as an alternative
for developing wine regions. However, the investigations reveal that there is a lack of information regarding
the cellar visitor’s characteristics and behaviors. Thus, the present study aims to determine the visitors’
characteristics from the Brazilian wine regions of the Vale dos Vinhedos and Vale do São Francisco.
In order to achieve the mentioned objectives, a research tool was developed to obtain qualitative and
quantitative data about wine tourists, their predilections, behaviors, motivations and consumption habits.
The surveys were applied to the tourists who visited these regions, with the support of local entities and
the consent of the wineries. The data were submitted to multivariate statistical techniques with the
objective of obtaining different segments.
Therefore, the results indicate that visits to these regions can be motivated by several factors, related to
wine, but also with the desire to know the region, take a vacation or experience leisure time.
It was also observed that the wine tourists from the Vale dos Vinhedos are mostly men or women, aged
between 26 and 45 years, married, with high levels of education and income. While in the Vale do São
Francisco, they are mostly women, aged between 18 and 35 years old, single, with medium-high
education and low-middle income.
In addition, four segments of wine tourists were obtained, which were denominated: the passionate, the
interested, the occasional visitors and the indifferent.
The conclusions also suggest that knowing better the profile of the wine tourist, its behaviors and
motivations for the visit, enables the implementation of new marketing strategies and improvement of the
offer, which can help the enterprises to become more competitive
