    Uveitis and Gender: The Course of Uveitis in Pregnancy

    The hormonal and immunological changes in pregnancy have a key role in maintaining maternal tolerance of the semiallogeneic foetus. These pregnancy-associated changes may also influence the course of maternal autoimmune diseases. Noninfectious uveitis tends to improve during pregnancy. Specifically, uveitis activity tends to ameliorate from the second trimester onwards, with the third trimester being associated with the lowest disease activity. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is likely to be multifactorial and complex. Possible mechanisms include Th1/Th2 immunomodulation, regulatory T-cell phenotype plasticity, and immunosuppressive cytokines. This clearly has management implications for patients with chronic sight threatening disease requiring systemic treatment, as most medications are not recommended during pregnancy due to lack of safety data or proven teratogenicity. Given that uveitis activity is expected to decrease in pregnancy, systemic immunosuppressants could be tapered during pregnancy in these patients, with flare-ups being managed with local corticosteroids till delivery. In the postpartum period, as uveitis activity is expected to rebound, patients should be reviewed closely and systemic medications recommenced, depending on uveitis activity and the patient’s breastfeeding status. This review highlights the current understanding of the course of uveitis in pregnancy and its management to help guide clinicians in managing their uveitis patients during this special time in life

    Oral cancer secretome: Identification of cancer-associated proteins

    This study aims to identify cancer-associated proteins in the secretome of oral cancer cell lines. We have successfully established four primary cell cultures of normal cells with a limited lifespan without human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) immortalization. The secretome of these primary cell cultures were compared with that of oral cancer cell lines using 2DE. Thirty five protein spots were found to have changed in abundance. Unambiguous identification of these proteins was achieved by MALDI TOF/TOF. In silico analysis predicted that 24 of these proteins were secreted via classical or nonclassical mechanisms. The mRNA expression of six genes was found to correlate with the corresponding protein abundance. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) core analysis revealed that the identified proteins were relevant in, and related to, cancer development with likely involvements in tumor growth, metastasis, hyperproliferation, tumorigenesis, neoplasia, hyperplasia, and cell transformation. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that a comparative study of the secretome of cancer versus normal cell lines can be used to identify cancer-associated proteins.Article Link: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/elps.201300126/abstrac

    Submillimeter Array multiline observations of the massive star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732

    Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of the high-mass star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1 mm and 850 μ\mum band with 1 GHz bandwidth reveal a wealth of information. We present the observations of 34 lines from 16 different molecular species. Most molecular line maps show significant contributions from the outflow, and only few molecules are confined to the inner core. We present and discuss the molecular line observations and outline the unique capabilities of the SMA for future imaging line surveys at high spatial resolution.Comment: Accepted for ApJ Letters, SMA special volum

    SMA outflow/disk studies in the massive star-forming region IRAS18089-1732

    SMA observations of the massive star-forming region IRAS 18089-1732 in the 1mm and 850mu band reveal outflow and disk signatures in different molecular lines. The SiO(5--4) data show a collimated outflow in the northern direction. In contrast, the HCOOCH3(20--19) line, which traces high-density gas, is confined to the very center of the region and shows a velocity gradient across the core. The HCOOCH3 velocity gradient is not exactly perpendicular to the outflow axis but between an assumed disk plane and the outflow axis. We interpret these HCOOCH3 features as originating from a rotating disk that is influenced by the outflow and infall. Based on the (sub-)mm continuum emission, the mass of the central core is estimated to be around 38M_sun. The dynamical mass derived from the HCOOCH3 data is 22Msun, of about the same order as the core mass. Thus, the mass of the protostar/disk/envelope system is dominated by its disk and envelope. The two frequency continuum data of the core indicate a low dust opacity index beta ~ 1.2 in the outer part, decreasing to beta ~ 0.5 on shorter spatial scales.Comment: 7 pages of text, 1 table, 3 figures, accepted for ApJ Letter

    A possible minimal gauge-Higgs unification

    A possible minimal model of the gauge-Higgs unification based on the higher dimensional spacetime M^4 X (S^1/Z_2) and the bulk gauge symmetry SU(3)_C X SU(3)_W X U(1)_X is constructed in some details. We argue that the Weinberg angle and the electromagnetic current can be correctly identified if one introduces the extra U(1)_X above and a bulk scalar triplet. The VEV of this scalar as well as the orbifold boundary conditions will break the bulk gauge symmetry down to that of the standard model. A new neutral zero-mode gauge boson Z' exists that gains mass via this VEV. We propose a simple fermion content that is free from all the anomalies when the extra brane-localized chiral fermions are taken into account as well. The issues on recovering a standard model chiral-fermion spectrum with the masses and flavor mixing are also discussed, where we need to introduce the two other brane scalars which also contribute to the Z' mass in the similar way as the scalar triplet. The neutrinos can get small masses via a type I seesaw mechanism. In this model, the mass of the Z' boson and the compactification scale are very constrained as respectively given in the ranges: 2.7 TeV < m_Z' < 13.6 TeV and 40 TeV < 1/R < 200 TeV.Comment: 20 pages, revised versio

    Preparing multi-partite entanglement of photons and matter qubits

    We show how to make event-ready multi-partite entanglement between qubits which may be encoded on photons or matter systems. Entangled states of matter systems, which can also act as single photon sources, can be generated using the entangling operation presented in quant-ph/0408040. We show how to entangle such sources with photon qubits, which may be encoded in the dual rail, polarization or time-bin degrees of freedom. We subsequently demonstrate how projective measurements of the matter qubits can be used to create entangled states of the photons alone. The state of the matter qubits is inherited by the generated photons. Since the entangling operation can be used to generate cluster states of matter qubits for quantum computing, our procedure enables us to create any (entangled) photonic quantum state that can be written as the outcome of a quantum computer.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; to appear in Journal of Optics

    Constraining the HI-Halo Mass Relation From Galaxy Clustering

    We study the dependence of galaxy clustering on atomic gas mass using a sample of \sim16,000 galaxies with redshift in the range of 0.0025<z<0.050.0025<z<0.05 and HI mass of MHI>108MM_{\rm HI}>10^8M_{\odot}, drawn from the 70% complete sample of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. We construct subsamples of galaxies with MHIM_{\rm HI} above different thresholds, and make volume-limited clustering measurements in terms of three statistics: the projected two-point correlation function, the projected cross-correlation function with respect to a reference sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the redshift-space monopole moment. In contrast to previous studies, which found no/weak HI-mass dependence, we find both the clustering amplitude on scales above a few Mpc and the bias factors to increase significantly with increasing HI mass for subsamples with HI mass thresholds above 109M10^9M_{\odot}. For HI mass thresholds below 109M10^9M_{\odot}, while the measurements have large uncertainties caused by the limited survey volume and sample size, the inferred galaxy bias factors are systematically lower than the minimum halo bias factor from mass-selected halo samples. The simple halo model, in which galaxy content is only determined by halo mass, has difficulties in interpreting the clustering measurements of the HI-selected samples. We extend the simple model by including the halo formation time as an additional parameter. A model that puts HI-rich galaxies into halos that formed late can reproduce the clustering measurements reasonably well. We present the implications of our best-fitting model on the correlation of HI mass with halo mass and formation time, as well as the halo occupation distributions and HI mass functions for central and satellite galaxies. These results are compared with the predictions from semi-analytic galaxy formation models and hydrodynamic galaxy formation simulations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ.
