Comment on ``Evidence for Anisotropic State of Two-Dimensional Electrons in High Landau Levels''

In a recent letter M. Lilly et al [PRL 82, 394 (1999)] have shown that a highly anisotropic state can arise in certain two dimensional electron systems. In the large square samples studied, resistances measured in the two perpendicular directions are found to have a ratio that may be 60 or larger at low temperature and at certain magnetic fields. In Hall bar measurements, the anisotropy ratio is found to be much smaller (roughly 5). In this comment we resolve this discrepancy by noting that the anisotropy of the underlying sheet resistivities is correctly represented by Hall bar resistance measurements but shows up exponentially enhanced in resistance measurements on square samples due to simple geometric effects. We note, however, that the origin of this underlying resistivity anisotropy remains unknown, and is not addressed here.Comment: 1 page, minor calculational error repaire

    A VLT/FORS2 Multi-Slit Search for Lyman-alpha Emitting Galaxies at z~6.5

We present results from a deep spectroscopic search in the 9150A atmospheric window for z~6.5 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies using the VLT/FORS2. Our multi-slit+narrow-band filter survey covers a total spatial area of 17.6 sq. arcmin in four different fields and reaches fluxes down to 5x10^(-18) erg/s/cm^2 (7 sigma detection). Our detection limit is significantly fainter than narrow-band searches at this redshift and fainter also than the unlensed brightness of Hu et al.'s HCM6A at z=6.56, and thus provides better overlap with surveys at much lower redshifts. Eighty secure emission line galaxies are detected. However, based on their clear continuum emission shortward of the line or the presence of multiple lines, none of these can be Ly-alpha emission at z~6.5. Our null result of finding no z~6.5 Ly-alpha emitters suggests that the number density of Ly-alpha emitters with L>2x10^(42) erg/s declines by ~2 between z~3 and z~6.5.Comment: accepted by ApJ Letters (originally submitted June 11, 2004

Adaptive model reduction for continuous systems via recursive rational interpolation

    Get PDF
A method for adaptive identification of reduced-order models for continuous stable SISO and MIMO plants is presented. The method recursively finds a model whose transfer function (matrix) matches that of the plant on a set of frequencies chosen by the designer. The algorithm utilizes the Moving Discrete Fourier Transform (MDFT) to continuously monitor the frequency-domain profile of the system input and output signals. The MDFT is an efficient method of monitoring discrete points in the frequency domain of an evolving function of time. The model parameters are estimated from MDFT data using standard recursive parameter estimation techniques. The algorithm has been shown in simulations to be quite robust to additive noise in the inputs and outputs. A significant advantage of the method is that it enables a type of on-line model validation. This is accomplished by simultaneously identifying a number of models and comparing each with the plant in the frequency domain. Simulations of the method applied to an 8th-order SISO plant and a 10-state 2-input 2-output plant are presented. An example of on-line model validation applied to the SISO plant is also presented
