    Prevalence and factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder in healthcare workers exposed to COVID-19 in Wuhan, China: a cross-sectional survey

    BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant threats to both the physical and psychological health of healthcare workers working in the front-line combating COVID-19. However, studies regarding the medium to long term impact of COVID-19 on mental health among healthcare workers are limited. Therefore, we conducted this cross-sectional survey to investigate the prevalence, factors and impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in healthcare workers exposed to COVID-19 8 months after the end of the outbreak in Wuhan, China.MethodsA web-based questionnaire was delivered as a link via the communication application WeChat to those healthcare workers who worked at several COVID-19 units during the outbreak (from December 2019 to April 2020) in Wuhan, China. The questionnaire included questions on social-demographic data, the post-traumatic stress disorder checklist-5 (PCL-5), the family care index questionnaire (Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection and Resolve, APGAR), and the quality-of-life scale (QOL). The prevalence, risk and protective factors, and impact of PTSD on healthcare workers were subsequently analyzed.ResultsAmong the 659 participants, 90 healthcare workers were still suffering from PTSD 8 months after the end of the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan, in which avoidance and negative impact were the most affected dimensions. Suffering from chronic disease, experiencing social isolation, and job dissatisfaction came up as independent risk factors for PTSD, while obtaining COVID-19 related information at an appropriate frequency, good family function, and working in well-prepared mobile cabin hospitals served as protective factors. The impact of PTSD on COVID-19 exposed healthcare workers was apparent by shortened sleeping time, feeling of loneliness, poorer quality of life and intention to resign.ConclusionsEight months after the end of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, the level of PTSD in healthcare workers exposed to COVID-19 was still high. Apart from the commonly recognized risk factors, comorbid chronic disease was identified as a new independent risk factor for developing PTSD. For countries where the pandemic is still ongoing or in case of future outbreaks of new communicable diseases, this study may contribute to preventing cases of PTSD in healthcare workers exposed to infectious diseases under such circumstances

    Unambiguous molecular detections with multiple genetic approach for the complicated chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chromosome 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) causes a developmental disorder during the embryonic stage, usually because of hemizygous deletions. The clinical pictures of patients with 22q11DS vary because of polymorphisms: on average, approximately 93% of affected individuals have a de novo deletion of 22q11, and the rest have inherited the same deletion from a parent. Methods using multiple genetic markers are thus important for the accurate detection of these microdeletions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 12 babies suspected to carry 22q11DS and 18 age-matched healthy controls from unrelated Taiwanese families. We determined genomic variance using microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH), quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Changes in genomic copy number were significantly associated with clinical manifestations for the classical criteria of 22q11DS using MPLA and qPCR (<it>p </it>< 0.01). An identical deletion was shown in three affected infants by MLPA. These reduced DNA dosages were also obtained partially using array-CGH and confirmed by qPCR but with some differences in deletion size.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Both MLPA and qPCR could produce a clearly defined range of deleted genomic DNA, whereas there must be a deleted genome that is not distinguishable using MLPA. These data demonstrate that such multiple genetic approaches are necessary for the unambiguous molecular detection of these types of complicated genomic syndromes.</p

    Certificateless Cross-Domain Group Authentication Key Agreement Scheme Based on ECC

    Focusing on the problem that existing traditional cross-domain group authentication schemes have a high complexity, a certificateless cross-domain group authentication key agreement scheme based on ECC is proposed. The protocol provides scalability and can meet the requirements of cross-domain key negotiation by multiple participants in different domains. Security analysis shows that the proposed scheme is secure in the random oracle security model, it can resist some attacks under the extended Canetti-Krawczyk (eCK) security model. Performance analysis shows that the proposed scheme is of strong practical application value with high efficiency; it costs relatively low amount of calculation and communication

    Phytoextraction and Antioxidant Defense of Mangrove Seedling (<i>Kandelia obovata</i>) to Inorganic Arsenate Exposure

    Increasing arsenic (As) pollution is posing potential endangerment to mangrove wetland ecosystems. Mangrove phytoextraction, translocation, and responses to As exposure must be urgently addressed. In this study, the growth and physiological response of Kandelia obovata seedlings were examined after addition of 25−200 mg kg−1 As under sediment culture conditions. Results showed that the seedling morphological variations were not significant below 100 mg kg−1 compared to the control group, indicating superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase synergetic interaction to resist the As exposure. High As concentrations (150–200 mg kg−1) inhibited the seedling growth accompanied by a significant increase in malondialdehyde content and decrease in activities of antioxidant enzymes. Toxicity symptoms and mortality appeared in 200 mg kg−1 As, presumably because the plant reached the limit of As tolerance. Besides, As accumulated mainly in roots, accounting for 87.04–97.85% of the total As, and the bioaccumulation factor (BCF) was >100%. However, the BCF and translocation factor (TF) in stems and leaves were below unity, illustrating a weak capacity of transferring As to aerial parts of the seedlings. Overall, K. obovata is a potential remediated species in polluted coastal wetlands due to high phytoextraction capacity and high tolerance to As exposure

Traditional methods adopted to monitor this process include measurement of coating weight gain, performance of disintegration and dissolution test, etc. However, not only do these methods cause destruction to the samples, but also consume time and energy. There have recently emerged the applications of process analytical technologies (PAT) on film coating, especially some novel spectroscopic and imaging technologies, which have the potential to real-time track the progress in film coating and optimize production efficiency.     An injectable in situ gel with cubic and hexagonal nanostructures for local treatment of chronic periodontitis

    Periodontitis is a chronic bacterial infection, and its effective treatment is dependent on the retention of antibiotics of effective concentrations at the periodontal pockets. In this study, a solution–gel based inverse lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) system was explored to deliver metronidazole to the periodontal pockets for local treatment of periodontitis. It was found that the metronidazole-loaded LLC precursor spontaneously transformed into gel in the presence of water in the oral cavity. The low viscosity of the precursor would allow its penetration to the rather difficult to reach infection sites, while the adhesiveness and crystalline nanostructures (inverse bicontinuous cubic Pn3m phase and inverse hexagonal phase) of the formed gel would permit its firm adhesion to the periodontal pockets. The LLC system provided sustained drug release over one week in vitro. Results from in vivo study using a rabbit periodontitis model showed that the LLC system was able to maintain the metronidazole concentrations in the periodontal pockets above the minimum inhibition concentration for over 10 days without detectable drug concentration in the blood. Owing to the spontaneous solution–gel transition in the periodontal pockets and unique liquid crystalline nanostructures, the LLC in situ gel provided effective treatment of periodontitis for a prolonged period of time with reduced systematic side effects, compared to metronidazole suspension which was effective for 24 h with detectable metronidazole concentrations in the blood after 6 h

    Abstract In this report, we described a new technique of gasless V-NOTES for hysterectomy and salpingectomy on a robotic platform with flexible devices in a porcine model. As a result, the gynecological procedures were successfully completed. The total operative time was 110 min, while the docking time was 10 min. The estimated blood loss was estimated to be 10 mL with no intraoperative complications. It revealed that gasless V-NOTES for hysterectomy and salpingectomy on a robotic platform with flexible devices appeared to be feasible and safe in the porcine model and has the potential for clinical use in human beings
