OverPlotter: A Utility for Herschel Data Processing

The OverPlotter utility is a GUI tool written in Java to support interactive data processing (DP) and analysis for the Herschel Space Observatory within the framework of the Herschel Common Science System (HCSS)(Wieprecht et al 2004). The tool expands upon the capabilities of the TableViewer (Zhang & Schulz 2005), providing now also the means to create additional overlays of sev- eral X/Y scatter plots within the same display area. These layers can be scaled and panned, either individually, or together as one graph. Visual comparison of data with different origins and units becomes much easier. The number of available layers is not limited, except by computer memory and performance. Presentation images can be easily created by adding annotations, labeling layers and setting colors. The tool will be very helpful especially in the early phases of Herschel data analysis, when a quick access to contents of data products is important

Thematic Progression Theory and Discourse Translation: A Case Study of The Gift of the Magi

In recent years, the Systemic Functional Grammar has long been viewed as providing a powerful framework for discourse analysis, in which thematic structure, information structure and cohesion are three key tools to realize the textual meta-function. Meanwhile, the emergence of thematic theory and thematic progression theory (TP theory) has attracted great attention in linguistics. TP theory has been thought of as a potentially analytic mean for decomposing discourses in translation. This paper spares no efforts to present the practical values of thematic progression in discourse translation by analyzing a short story, The Gift of the Magi, by O·Henry and its Chinese version translated by Wang Yongnian, a famous and prestigious translator, based on the thematic theory and TP theory respectively proposed by Halliday and Danes, and thus giving some hints to E-C short stories’ translation.

RBX1/ROC1-SCF E3 ubiquitin ligase is required for mouse embryogenesis and cancer cell survival

RBX1 (also known as ROC1) is a RING subunit of SCF (Skp1, Cullins, F-box proteins) E3 ubiquitin ligases, required for SCF to direct a timely degradation of diverse substrates, thereby regulating numerous cellular processes under both physiological and pathological conditions. Previous studies have shown that RBX1 is essential for growth in yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila. The role of RBX1 in mouse development and in regulation of cancer cell survival was unknown. Our recent work demonstrated that RBX1 is an essential gene for mouse embryogenesis, and targeted disruption of RBX1 causes embryonic lethality at E7.5 due to hypoproliferation as a result of p27 accumulation. We also showed that RBX1 is overexpressed in a number of human cancers, and siRNA silencing of RBX1 caused cancer cell death as a result of sequential induction of G2-M arrest, senescence and apoptosis. These findings reveal a physiological role of RBX1 during mouse development and a pathological role for the survival of human cancer cells. Differential outcomes between normal (growth arrest) and cancer cells (cell death) upon RBX1 disruption/silencing suggest RBX1 as a valid anticancer target

Three-Process Analysis Method on the Translation Process of Metaphorical Clothes Images in the Graceful and Restrained Poetry

Considering the frequent appearance of clothes and decoration in the graceful and restrained poetry, this paper studied on the image of “greenish sleeves” in Tune: Mountain Hawthorn:She never likes to cross the river far composed by Yan Jidao(1038-1110A.D.), a representative Ci poet of the graceful and restrained poetic school in the Northern Song Dynasty of China (960-1127A.D.), a monumental period in Chinese literature. This paper borrowed as theoretical support Chinese scholar Lin Xinru’s three-process analysis method, which is a daring application of Fauconnier’s Conceptual Blending Theory in the interlingual discourse of translation. According to the guiding method, this paper analyzed the translation process of the selected poem mainly from the processes of comprehending and translating since the process of revising is a recycle of the former two in actual translation. The translation selected for analysis is provided by Xu Yuanchong, an authoritative Chinese translator of classic Chinese literature. The analysis result revealed that the blending types judged from the correspondence structure can be a pragmatic reference for translators in the translating process.
