Spline-backfitted kernel smoothing of nonlinear additive autoregression model
Application of nonparametric and semiparametric regression techniques to
high-dimensional time series data has been hampered due to the lack of
effective tools to address the ``curse of dimensionality.'' Under rather weak
conditions, we propose spline-backfitted kernel estimators of the component
functions for the nonlinear additive time series data that are both
computationally expedient so they are usable for analyzing very
high-dimensional time series, and theoretically reliable so inference can be
made on the component functions with confidence. Simulation experiments have
provided strong evidence that corroborates the asymptotic theory.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/009053607000000488 the

Robust Stability Analysis for the New Type Rural Social Endowment Insurance System with Minor Fluctuations in China
The new type rural social endowment insurance system is one of the important policy arrangements in public welfare field in China. Quantitative research is theoretically and practically important for studying the new type rural social endowment insurance system. In this paper, based on the modern control theory, the linear control model for the new type rural social endowment insurance system is set up, and then the robust stability for the new type rural social endowment insurance system of China with minor fluctuations is discussed by using the linear control model
Capacity Planning with Financial and Operational Hedging in Low‐Cost Countries
The authors of this paper outline a capacity planning problem in which a risk-averse firm reserves capacities with potential suppliers that are located in multiple low-cost countries. While demand is uncertain, the firm also faces multi-country foreign currency exposures. This study develops a mean-variance model that maximizes the firm’s optimal utility and derives optimal utility and optimal decisions in capacity and financial hedging size. The authors show that when demand and exchange rate risks are perfectly correlated, a risk- averse firm, by using financial hedging, will achieve the same optimal utility as a risk-neutral firm. In this paper as well, a special case is examined regarding two suppliers in China and Vietnam. The results show that if a single supplier is contracted, financial hedging most benefits the highly risk-averse firm when the demand and exchange rate are highly negatively related. When only one hedge is used, financial hedging dominates operational hedging only when the firm is very risk averse and the correlation between the two exchange rates have become positive. With both theoretical and numerical results, this paper concludes that the two hedges are strategic tools and interact each other to maximize the optimal utility
Distillation of Gaussian Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering with noiseless linear amplification
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering is one of the most intriguing features
of quantum mechanics and an important resource for quantum communication. The
inevitable loss and noise in the quantum channel will lead to decrease of the
steerability and turn it from two-way to one-way. Despite an extensive research
on protecting entanglement from decoherence, it remains a challenge to protect
EPR steering due to its intrinsic difference from entanglement. Here, we
experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian EPR steering in lossy
and noisy environment using measurement-based noiseless linear amplification.
Our scheme recovers the two-way steerability from one-way in certain region of
loss and enhances EPR steering for both directions. We also show that the
distilled EPR steering allows to extract secret key in one-sided
device-independent quantum key distribution. Our work paves the way for quantum
communication exploiting EPR steering in practical quantum channels
The effect of the ion beam energy on the properties of indium tin oxide thin films prepared by ion beam assisted deposition
Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films have been deposited onto polycarbonate substrates by ion beam assisted deposition technique at room temperature. The structural, optical and electrical properties of the films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, optical transmittance, ellipsometric and Hall effect measurements. The effect of the ion beam energy on the properties of the films has been studied. The optical parameters have been obtained by fitting the ellipsometric spectra. It has been found that high quality ITO film (low electrical resistivity and high optical transmittance) can be obtained at low ion beam energy. In addition, the ITO film prepared at low ion beam energy gives a high reflectance in IR region which is useful for some electromagnetic wave shielding applications.Fundação Calouste Gulbenkia
