Learning to Embed Words in Context for Syntactic Tasks
We present models for embedding words in the context of surrounding words.
Such models, which we refer to as token embeddings, represent the
characteristics of a word that are specific to a given context, such as word
sense, syntactic category, and semantic role. We explore simple, efficient
token embedding models based on standard neural network architectures. We learn
token embeddings on a large amount of unannotated text and evaluate them as
features for part-of-speech taggers and dependency parsers trained on much
smaller amounts of annotated data. We find that predictors endowed with token
embeddings consistently outperform baseline predictors across a range of
context window and training set sizes.Comment: Accepted by ACL 2017 Repl4NLP worksho
Synchronization Expressions In Parallel Programming Languages
In this thesis, we first review current trends in the areas related to parallel programming languages. By reviewing data-parallel and control-parallel paradigms, parallelizing compilers and parallel programming languages, we demonstrate the necessity of developing high-level parallel programming languages.;Synchronization is an essential part of parallel processing. However, many synchronization mechanisms currently used in parallel programming languages are at too low a level to be compatible with the other constructs of high-level languages. We propose and develop new constructs for synchronization termed synchronization expressions . These new constructs relieve programmers of the burden of imposing synchronization, requiring them only to specify the necessary constraints. The new constructs demand no structural changes to the base language and allow complicated synchronization constraints to be expressed easily.;We also introduce a new family of languages, called synchronization languages, to model the synchronization of parallel processes. A synchronization language is a restricted regular language. Synchronization languages provide us with not only a theoretical model for the semantics of the synchronization of multiprocessors but also a systematic method for implementing synchronization expressions. We also discuss the idea of using reversed alternating finite automata in the implementation of synchronization expressions
Workplace Democracy and Performance of Employees in Public Institutions in Nigeria: How Far, So Far?
In most work organizations in Nigeria, it was conventionally alluded that management had the prerogative and exclusive preserve in relation to decision making; therefore, little or no concrete efforts were made to institutionalize Workplace Democracy (WPD). This is in contrast to what obtained in other countries especially in developed societies where WPD has long been espoused as part of the needed tonic for operational efficiency and organizational performance. Against the backdrop of recent claims and counter claims as to the place of WPD practices in organizations in Nigeria, this paper sought to investigate WPD variables (Collective Bargaining, Committee membership, workers’ representation on boards and use of quality circles) vis-a-vis employee performance variables of job satisfaction, commitment, punctuality, timely completion of work. Using both qualitative and qualitative approaches in the collection and analyses of data, which were supplemented by views of “informed people”, the paper reinforces relationships between workplace democracy and employee performance variables. However, observable evidences supported by descriptive analyses of data are suggestive that the future of workplace democracy in Nigerian public institutions is bleak. THE REBELLION BEHAVIOR OF CARRIE WHITE’S CHARACTER IN CARRIE MOVIE (2013)
The purposes of this research are to found out about the rebellion behavior of Carrie White’s character and how it portrayed through her characterization and also to found out about the resolution of her rebellion behavior in Carrie movie (2013). The design of this research was qualitative research. The data in this research were from the dialogue, action, scene, and script of the movie which is Carrie movie (2013). The data were analyzed using the rebellion theory by Arnett and the characterization theory by Kenan. This research has three research questions, the first one is what is the rebellion behavior of Carrie White’s character portrayed in the movie based on Arnett’s adolescent theory?, the second one is how is Carrie White’s rebellion behavior portrayed in the movie through the characterization theory by Rimmon Kenan?, and the last one is what are the resolutions of Carrie White’s rebellion behavior portrayed in the movie?. The result showed that Carrie White has three kinds of rebellion behavior according to the first research question based on Arnetts theory which is the conflict with parents, mood disruption, and risk behavior, and also the second research question that Carrie White characterization was portrayed through Kenan’s theory which is the indirect definition. The resolution of this research is that Carrie White at the end of the movie felt sorry that she had rebelled against her mom.
